With the Deadline approaching where would you guys like to see us improve? The market can't possibly be that steep when Cleveland is willing to part with both Lee and Martinez for Loney. What are some guys you see us realistically being players for?

I'd like to give Cliff Lee a chance.

So one possible deal could be Lee and Jamey Carroll for Dan Uggla and a mid level prospect then we Could either A. Move Coghlan to 2nd and call Up Maybin or B. Move Bonifacio to 2nd and Gaby to 3rd.

Or we can try to go straight up Lee for Hermida which I don't think they would do so you could throw in a mid/lower level prospect.

You can also do the same things for Pavano but Pavano for Hermida straight out sounds like a reasonable deal both ways if not then just throw in a mid to low level prospect like I stated before.

Eh....I'd be really surprised if the Marlins made any major moves.

i think lee would be a good pickup but our main focus right now is bullpen and offense

Yeah, but it's good to stay optimistic.

I believe there last trade deadline trade was the Brad Penny a minor league pitcher and Hee Seop Choi for Paul Lo Duca, and Juan Encarnacion.

I think you mean last "major" trade.

Certainly there's been trade since...like the Arthur Rhodes acquisition last year.

Marco Scutaro and Scott Downs for Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker, and Sean West.

I hate to see West go, but Downs is probably the most underrated lefty reliever in baseball, and Scutaro is a solid player that can play all over the infield.

Just an opinion, Tucker lovers don't get all crazy on me telling me that thirty years from now pitchers will be striving for the "Ryan Tucker Award".

I understand the front office has talked about Sherrill, but I believe the FO showed that they aren't going to try and trade for relievers when they signed Ayala and Donnelly.

Like others have said, doubt any type of moves whatsoever occur with the Marlins.

Mark Teahen would be an interesting guy to go after, but the front office does not seem interested in going that direction.

If the Marlins begin to look for starting pitching, the Pirates seem like the easiest options to go to, with both Duke and Maholm available.

Still, doubt anything goes down.

Are you serious? Lee is going to cost more than Uggla and Hermida together.

I was thinking that it's possible for the Marlins to get Duke without having to give up too much.

I'd like to give Cliff Lee a chance.

Well they we're about to do Lee and Victor Martinez for James Loney and either Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley so I do think Uggla and Lee have the same value.

However Hermida isn't so you'd have to throw in a prospect or decent talent.

For the Marlins to pull the trigger on a deal before Friday's Trade Deadline, a number of factors must first fall into place.

Foremost, the organization isn't willing to spin off top-rated prospects for a quick fix.

The team also has made a conscious decision not to force a trade just to make a trade.

Still in position to make a run at the National League East title, as well as the Wild Card, president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest has been working the phones for about a month looking to upgrade.

The struggle is so many teams are in the same boat as the Marlins, and the players who might be available may not be worth the risk of trading away key prospects.

"We've been looking; Admin Beinfest has been looking at moves for a month," Marlins president David Samson said. "It's a difficult scenario because we're not willing to trade our future, because we have such good position players coming up.

"We feel like we're in position to do something, which is critically important, which is to be good each year. We don't want to hurt that streak of being competitive every year."

The prospects all teams are inquiring about are outfielder Mike Stanton and first baseman Logan Morrison. Both are regarded as untouchable. Both could be making the leap from Double-A Jacksonville to starting in the big leagues as early as next year.

"We're looking to improve ourselves right now," Beinfest said. "We are active. I don't think we've ever really been inactive. It's just different every year, and every team is different."

In recent weeks, the Marlins already made moves to upgrade the bullpen. Veterans Brendan Donnelly and Luis Ayala have been added, but the search continues to add more parts.

"We've talked about some of our younger guys getting experience, and getting better as the season goes on," Beinfest noted.

Spending wisely on payroll is crucial for the Marlins, a low-revenue-generating franchise. A new, retractable-roof ballpark, which is set to open in 2012, will help push up payroll. Until then, the team will be on a tight budget.

"We're not building for 2012. We're building to win, every single year," Samson said. "So we have to be careful.

"We look at the players we have, and we're set up for years. When we go into the new ballpark, we want to be more than competitive. We're not willing to wait until 2012. If there is a chance to get better now, we want to do it. But it's a fine line because you don't want to do it at the expense of the future."

If there is an established player available to help improve the team's playoff chances now, this front office has shown it is willing to pull the trigger.

In 2003, for instance, the Marlins acquired reliever Ugueth Urbina from the Rangers for a package of prospects that included first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who now is an All-Star with the Padres.

"It's a dilemma everybody faces. We faced it, too, in July of 2003, we traded Adrian Gonzalez and got back Ugueth Urbina," Samson said. "The difference between now and then was, if you recall, Ugueth Urbina was leading the American League in saves. He was the primary closer on the market, hands down. It's been a little different this year in defining an impact player."

please just get us a good hitter, dont really care where.

i hate to say that anyone is wrong but rumor is actually loney, a b level prospect, and either billingsley or kershaw

sorry just saw MMP made the same correction above

If we go after a Cliff Lee, Cleveland would most probably ask for Stanton.

They also asked for Billingsley or Kershaw (both are proven at the big league level, and both have the potential to be aces one day) + another prospect.

Yeah That's what i forgot.

And that's a good deal for a former Cy Young Winner and an All Star Catcher.

I'd like to get another bat in our lineup. Im not sure who but theres a lot of teams with a lot DECENT of hitters who aren't contending this year. The Pirates, Nationals, Mariners, Baltimore. Kansas City, Arizona or Toronto. Maybe a .270 hitter with some pop.

Lee and martinez would do wonders, move boni to 2nd and cantu to 3rd gaby sanchez to 1st

Marco Scutaro and Scott Downs for Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker, and Sean West.

That would be horrible.

Why would we trade our top pitching prospect, Tucker, and Hermida for a reliever and a .700 OPS infielder? Coghlan can basically give us the same production as Scutaro.

victor martinez hitting behind hanley and in front of cantu would be awesome. but that's not going to happen since the indians asked the red sox for buchholz in any deal involving martinez

If you're going after Lee and want Martinez, you might want to go after Garko instead. Cleveland will probably be looking to trade him and he has similar numbers to Martinez' this year, with the exception of the Rbi's. Garko is arbitration elegible til 2011 btw.

The Indians turned down a Buchholz-Martinez straight up trade.

That's because it would take more than him to get Martinez. They just want him as a centerpiece. The Red Sox shouldn't be surprised, they're trying to trade for one of the best catcher's in the game with a pitcher they aren't even confident in. Kind of like if we tried to trade Gaby Sanchez for anything.
