January 29, 201016 yr This is the mother of all reclammation projects for the Marlins. The thing I don't like about Turnbow is his utter lack of control. 168 walks in only 257 2/3 innings in his major league career. It will be interesting to see if Beinfest hits him with his magic wand.
January 29, 201016 yr Years ago I thought we need to go after him or Lidge. We missed out on Lidge but now years later we are trying out Turnbow. It will be a project.
January 29, 201016 yr I remember wanting to sign him last season for our yearly reclamation project. Still good on it.
January 29, 201016 yr At least it's a minor league deal so it has no roster implications right now. I don't know what to think, at first blush you have to hope he and Veras are the beginning of fringe/reclamation type signings not the end. Mike Macdougal surprises me he remains unsigned and that Calero is still on the market makes me wish I could sneak a peak at the Marlins internal player evaluations to understand what the reluctance is within baseball to sign the guy. I can't believe he's still holding fast to a two year contract demand but maybe he is.
January 29, 201016 yr Turnbow will get 600k if he makes the team, extra 50k is possible in incentives.

Even though MacDougal got his fair share of saves last year so he won't come as cheap.

I can't believe he's still holding fast to a two year contract demand but maybe he is. According to something I read yesterday i think it was on Juan Rodriguez's blog is that Calero is looking for a two-year deal and no team is willing to offer that...so that is why he remains out there.

Marlins are cautious about signing Kiko Calero because of risk that the veteran's right shoulder may not hold up like it did in '09 http://twitter.com/JoeFrisaro
January 29, 201016 yr Yeah, it also surprises me that Calero is still on the market. At this point I doubt he would be asking for that much though, as tons of relievers have already signed, and I doubt that many teams are willing to spend a lot on another reliever. So maybe there's a chance we can still get him back...
January 29, 201016 yr This or the Veras signing can't possibly go wrong. They are just minor league deals for guys who (at one point) had big-league stuff. Any minor league signing of someone who can possibly make an impact on the big-league club is a good thing. Especially if we only have to pay him 600K + incentives while getting his 2005 form.
January 29, 201016 yr He could very well become the ugliest player to have ever played for the Marlins
January 29, 201016 yr Seems likely to be this year's Brendan Donnelly, should be a nice 7th inning option.
January 29, 201016 yr Seems likely to be this year's Brendan Donnelly, should be a nice 7th inning option. I'm pretty sure the plan is to have him be the 8th inning guy, really. Setup man. If all goes well.
January 29, 201016 yr I don't think we'd put a guy who has played only 8 MLB games the last 2 seasons into the setup role. Maybe he eases into that role as the season progresses into June, but to start out he'll be the 6th/7th inning guy. I think Ryan Tucker actually starts the season as our setup man. Call me crazy, but I think Tucker would be perfect in that role.

If you're going with that logic for Turnbow who's actually been an All-Star before, why would Ryan Tucker automatically get the setup role? I like Tucker too and all, but why wouldn't he be "eased into the role?" The logical choice after last year would be Sanches, but I actually feel more confident next year with the two guys we signed today over Sanches.
January 29, 201016 yr i think the veras signing is better. he had a good year in 2008 and last year had 3 or 4 outings that he would take back but if he can work out those kinks he will be quite solid. what i still cannot beleive is how donnelly got a 1.5 million dollar deal with a chance to make it 3 million (but with the pirates who are terrible) and calero still hasnt signed. ive been saying to bring back calero all off-season...hes just one of those guys who really did not get the respect he deserves.
