May 18, 201016 yr If Hanely was that injured to the point where he jogged after that ball, he should have asked to be removed from the game. And then he has people bitching at him for not caring enough to play through injury, just like when he asked to be removed from a game last year and Uggla called him out It's lose-lose for him. I'm not talking about what is right in the eyes of this forum. I couldn't care less. His decision to either dog it or play through something that prevented him from running cost this team. That's what matters in the end. He hurt the team's chances of winning.
May 18, 201016 yr What we seem to be forgetting in all the reactions to this is that our best player is clearly, one way or another, banged up. That sucks. I bet most guys who play every day have some sort of little injury that is bothering them.
May 18, 201016 yr Also, the Uggla incident was completely different. That was perceived as a case of Hanley having an extremely prolonged slump and sitting out to preserve his batting title all while the Marlins' play-off chances were in doubt. None of those factors were at play here. It was a completely different scenario. This might have been a lose-lose situation from the perspective of spectators, but not in the context of actually playing the game. Not to mention the fact that his visible pain earlier in the game from the shin injury would make it difficult to brand Hanley as faking it.

He certainly doesn't care about the fans. He can't even sign autographs for little kids because he think's he's too damn important. The only person Hanley cares about is Hanley. I can't wait until he's donning a Mets hat and pulling this same shi* with a $200 million contract. I just hope someone clocks him in the face and we see him sporting a nice shiner like Scott Olsen that year. That's what he deserves.
May 18, 201016 yr This has nothing to do with Hanley Ramirez. I just want to throw this out there. HanleySucks, I want to fight you.

I think I've heard of MB having something like best post of the year or something like that. If there is an opposite, dumbest post, I nominate this one.
May 18, 201016 yr Fredi (via Joe Fisaro's Twitter Account): "He got smoked w' the ball in the ankle. But whether he's hurt or not hurt, we felt like the effort wasn't there " and "We expect an effort from 25 guys on this team, when that doesn't happen, we've got to do something."

And if you consider that is Fredi's perspective on the entire ordeal, if I shared that same perspective... I'd pull him from the game too so... good stuff.
May 18, 201016 yr There's no official newspiece out yet, but there are also rumors that Loria was in the clubhouse and Hanley refused to talk to reporters. Everything so far points to the conclusion that Hanley was simply dogging it. If it's true, how can he even look Volstad in the eye?
May 18, 201016 yr Apparently after the game Fredi also said that Brian Barden had a sprained ankle when he sent him into the game. Just a little bit more humiliating for H2R. Also said there would be no further punishment for Hanley, in his words "What could be more embarrassing than being taken out of a major league game?"
May 18, 201016 yr Well look at the bright side, were gonna get some attention from the national media. Edit: Kudos to Fredi for pulling Hanley and proving me wrong. Didn't think he had it in him.
May 18, 201016 yr Well look at the bright side, were gonna get some attention from the national media. Not exactly the kind we want.....
May 18, 201016 yr Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez admitted after the game that he yanked Ramirez, his All-Star shortstop and last year's NL batting champion, for what he perceived as a lack of effort. "He got smoked with the ball in the ankle, but we felt whether he was hurt or not hurt the effort wasn't there,'' Gonzalez said. "There's 24 guys out there that are busting their butts ... We expect an effort from 25 guys on this team and when that doesn't happen we got to do something.'' No further discipline is expected. Ramirez wasn't available for comment. Link
May 18, 201016 yr Carlos Beltran was the only other player I've ever seen that just casually jogged to the baseball like that.
May 18, 201016 yr Hanley Ramirez didn’t stick around to talk to reporters after tonight’s game. If he did, he might’ve thanked manager Fredi Gonzalez for choosing his words so carefully in explaining why Ramirez was taken out of the game in the second inning. And to Fredi’s credit, he didn’t try to sugar-coat what everyone in the press box and on TV saw — his $70-million shortstop loafing after a ball that he kicked down the left-field line. But Fredi was kind compared too what he could’ve said about the lax effort. Here’s the gist of what Fredi said in his post-game session with reporters — while owner Jeffrey Loria stood and watched from the manager’s office: “He got smoked by the ball in the ankle. Whether he’s hurt or not hurt or whatever it was, we felt the effort wasn’t there that we wanted. There’s 24 guys out there busting their butts. Cody Ross got hit by a ball 95 miles an hour that wasn’t thrown any less slower and he stayed in the game. And battled and got two hits. “You know what? There’s some injuries there but we expect an effort from 25 guys on this team and when that doesn’t happen we gotta do something. What did you tell Hanley when he came into the dugout? “I told him he needed to go inside and we’re gonna run (Brian) Barden out there, who has a sprained ankle, by the way. And he battled eight innings with a sprained ankle probably killing him, but that’s the effort we’re looking for as any organization. Gonzalez said Ramirez offered no excuse when he came off the field after the play. Will Hanley receive any further discipline? “You need more embarrassment other than being taken out of a major league game? Will he start Tuesday? “We’ll see. How disappointing is it to see that from your marquee player? “You guys call him a marquee guy. I got 25 guys all wearing the same uniform with the same Marlins insignia on the front. I thnik it’s disappointing if anybody did it, not just one guy. Earlier in the day, Hanley was lingering in the clubhouse, talking to a reporter, when Gonzalez came and got him because he was late for a pre-game team meeting. Don’t forget what happened last September — when Hanley took himself out of a game on a day when Atlanta’s Tim Hudson was dealing. Hanley cited a sore hamstring, but Dan Uggla publicly — and other teammates privately — questioned his desire to win. Hanley is a two-time All Star who won the batting crown last year by hitting .342. He’s getting $7 million this year, as part of that $70-million extension he signed in 2008. http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/2010/05/17/what-should-the-florida-marlins-do-about-hanley-ramirezs-lazy-lapses/

May 18, 201016 yr Is it too early to start the "Hanley being Hanley" catch phrase? I mean Hanley at 70% is better than most guys at 100%, but Hanley never was a max effort guy, even when he was in the minors with the Red Sox. Like they say with Manny Ramirez, when you put up the kind of production Hanley does, sometimes you learn to live with a player's immaturity. I'm not saying it's right, but to keep Hanley happy and producing, we need to ignore certain (lack of) leadership traits.
May 18, 201016 yr I'm just waiting for the "Hanley doesn't want to be here" posts and the trade rumors to begin.........

It's not like there Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, and even Jeff Conine around to show him good character. We've heard Hawk and Perez both speak out about it, IIRC, so I would guess they've spoken to him, and even they haven't gotten through. So maybe no one will, and we'll just have to take what we can get from Hanley, which as you said, is still better than almost everyone.

I think so, Hanley's still a young man and generally I see him running down some really tough balls on defense these days. I know he's been on the team for 5 seasons now but he's still the 3rd youngest guy in the starting lineup (5th youngest position player), maturity is more about age than service time. I think if this keeps going on maybe "Hanley being Hanley" will be apt but not at this point.
May 18, 201016 yr I think we all knew about his laziness and lack of effort before this, but we accepted it as long as he was producing better numbers than any other SS in the MLB. Of course you don't want to see this happen with any player, but as long as he keeps on putting up the numbers and he isn't affecting any of the other players, I don't have much of a problem with it. What he did tonight was bad, but he hadn't done anything as bad as this until now. The last thing we want to happen is for Fredi and the FO to alienate Hanley enough so that he demands for a trade. Manny's laziness didn't seem to have that bad of an effect on the Red Sox, either.
