May 18, 201016 yr I can't believe some people are actually defending the guy tonight. If his name was Jeremy Hermida, there would have been multiple threads on it, already. Not even Hermida did such a thing here. It's pathetic, and quite frankly, I'd much rather see the guys who want to play even if the one who doesn't want to play is the only superstar on the team. Nice to see a change of heart Erik. If I remember correctly...I expressed a concern for Hanley's overall apathetic play just a few nights ago and you were quick to dismiss these now seemingly correct observations.
May 18, 201016 yr Top marks to Fredi on this one taking Hanley out. I definately dont think he will start in today's game and it will give Barden a chance. To be honest I actually suspected Hanley would get today off anyway and I think it is something Rich and Tommy touched upon last week. Cantu and Uggla have had a rest during this long stretch of games and after an intense 4 game series last weekend and with tough trips to St Louis and Chicago on the horizon, the day game today after a night game would of been a chance to rest Hanley before this situation happened.
May 18, 201016 yr Im sorry but there should be no reason, barring an injury, where a player making $70 million isnt giving 100% effort every night.
May 18, 201016 yr In case there was any doubt: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_bytes/2010/05/is-time-to-question-hanley-ramirezs-heart.html
May 18, 201016 yr Why did Gonzales wait until the end of the inning? If you are going to really make a point, you send Barden onto the field immediately. If Hanley can't or won't hustle on the field, why wait? There's shortstop at Jacksonville that's hitting the ball really well.
May 18, 201016 yr What year was it that Hanley got hit by a pitch on the hand on the second to last day of the season and played the next game and had a great quote about beating the Mets' asses?
May 18, 201016 yr I think this definitely is a statement/turning point for the organization. Honestly, they should consider trading him. I know it sounds crazy but this has been a problem for awhile. Any Marlins fan that has been paying attention has heard the "whispers" of this behavior. Don't get me wrong, as a talent, I love Hanley. But for the organization, it might be best to move on. I'm seeing a lot of our players diving and giving it their all to make a play. Hanley doesn't do that all the time. You can't count on him to give you that. Consider this. Maybe the reason (more than trade value), they kept Uggla around is because he's never dogged games. Maybe the organization will keep Uggla around for those reasons and trade Hanley.
May 18, 201016 yr Hanley has definitely been dogging it even before this. Case and point in Washington on the Friday night we won, Hanley in his first or second AB (can't remember) grounded out to third and it took him two minutes to get back to the dugout and it was not the third out. I was thinking to myself "this is rediculious." Wake up Hanley! I'd bench him today! Good job by Fredi last night!
May 18, 201016 yr That's as bad a display of dogging it as I can remember given the situation.. 3 runners running around the bases. During the replay I said "WOW" just prior to Rich saying it.
May 18, 201016 yr Looks like someone like Helms, one of the few veterans on this team or peers Jorge, Dan or Cody need to have another chat with Hanley, if he uses the excuse he's hurt then he shouldn't out on the field. Either way he wasn't helping the team with his performance, I would bench him tonight if it were me!
May 18, 201016 yr I just saw the highlights on SportsCenter and it was REALLY BAD. He ran hard to try to get to the ball initially and then jogged gingerly to get the ball after he kicked it. No excuses.

May 18, 201016 yr Hanley does things differently. I don't think he is lazy, I think he is young and immature, and wants to be perceived as being "cool". He is lackadaisical at times just because he can. He is a superstar and he knows it. He thinks he can get away with things other players can't, and usually does because he Is the superstar and is being treated gingerly by all. He thinks it's cool to act as if he doesn't care even though he probably does. Reminds me a lot of Miguel Cabrera. He is the best player on our team and people don't seem to like him much. There is a reason for that. His entrance song is "Superstar", please! What happens now? Fredi rarely is so public with player criticism. He really must have been upset. I think Fredi took it upon himself to reprimand Hanley in the dugout. I don't think Loria had anything to do with that. (Was Loria seen talking to Fredi before Fredi talked to Hanley in the dugout? That wouldn't surprise me.) Loria was in the club house after the game and was probably backing Fredi up 100%. Otherwise Fredi would not have been so openly critical of Hanley. Hanley will probably not play in the afternoon game today. Call it "rest" or "punishment" or maybe both. I doubt we will hear much more from Fredi about he incident. His anger has probably subsided and he will revert to his "we will take care of this privately" line he always uses. As for Hanley.....I am glad he did not talk to the media after the game. Who knows what he may have said! He was running hard without a noticeable limp toward the pop fly that landed between him and Coghlan. I don't think he was hurting that much. He probably feels ashamed and angered at the same time. Hopefully he has had enough time to cool off and to think before he talks to the media today. His best response would be something like, "Yes I was hurting from the foul that hit my leg, but I should have run faster to the ball after I kicked it. It is the manager's decision to bench a player he thinks is not giving 100% effort and I have to respect that" If he goes into a rant about how unfair he has been treated he will look bad and there will be tension on the team for a while.
May 18, 201016 yr The main worry I have is that the Marlins appear to have already surrounded him with character guys like Dawson and Tony Perez, and he's still who he is despite being a 5-year starter. I actually disagree with Rab about age being more important than service time here; do you think Hanley would be more mature now if he had 2 more year in the minors but was now already 27? I don't. The responsibility of the big leagues should mature you faster than the same or even more time in the minors. Especially when you're a top prospect, I would imagine you get your way just as much if not more than he has in the big leagues. I certainly can't see a minor league manager putting his ass on the line to bench Hanley in AA. As for a trade, even with this flaw, he's still incredibly valuable. And it doesn't seem as if his behavior is rubbing off on others. The only team that I could think of that could maybe put together a viable package is Texas. Something along the line of Andrus, Feliz, and Holland? It's a top story on ESPN. Yay.

They had Hanley freaking BLASTING Fredi! He said something along the lines of, "there's a reason he never played in the big leagues" and that was the best of it. I DEFINITELY did not expect this.. Jeez..
May 18, 201016 yr This is just crazy stuff. I don't know what else to say right now, but Hanley seems to be acting like a diva.
May 18, 201016 yr Regardless if Hanley feels like his jogging was a result of his injury and not him dogging it, his talking to the media and extending the life of the story does him no good and only paints himself in a worse color.
