I think this definitely is a statement/turning point for the organization. Honestly, they should consider trading him. I know it sounds crazy but this has been a problem for awhile. Any Marlins fan that has been paying attention has heard the "whispers" of this behavior. Don't get me wrong, as a talent, I love Hanley. But for the organization, it might be best to move on. I'm seeing a lot of our players diving and giving it their all to make a play. Hanley doesn't do that all the time. You can't count on him to give you that. Consider this. Maybe the reason (more than trade value), they kept Uggla around is because he's never dogged games. Maybe the organization will keep Uggla around for those reasons and trade Hanley.

This is the first time that there have been demonstrable consequences for the team. I think it is likely that he got the message. He is being humiliated for this. I just noticed that Hanley has made the front page of Yahoo.com for this incident.

Can anyone show me the play? I have to see what the big deal is about! I feel left out.

I'm so glad I wasn't watching the game at the time, I would have been infuriated.

My god, same.

By the way, he was also 7 for his last 30 at the plate.

Did you think you could keep playing?

Ramirez: For him, I don't think so.

wow......

Ruh roh...

Do we have any viable SS options in the upper minors?

Osvaldo Martinez is killing AA. Hanley needs to grow the f*** up. Injury or not, this isn't the first time he's done something like this. One of the first things you learn in little league is to never give up on a play until it is officially over. Then to go on and talk sh*t about his manager, saying he's never been a big leaguer and that "he can do whatever he f***ing wants" and put the rest of his team down, saying a lot of guys on the team don't try either? Simply put, this isn't the way a franchise player acts.

Hopefully when he's finally taken a deep breath and realized how stupid this is, he'll kiss & make up with Freddi.

You're getting paid a truckload of cash to play baseball, be a grownup. Or just say your ankle was worse than you thought and you're sorry & should have taken yourself out but thought you could play through it, blah, blah, etc, etc, and be done with it.

Hanley I hate to tell you this but Freddi is about as much of a player's manager as you're going to find.

Lord knows what would be in the papers today if Jim Leyland were your manager.

And the comment about Freddi not knowing about injuries 'cuz he never played in the bigs.... yeah brilliant stuff.

I just think the thing to remember is that Hanley might have valid points about dogging it but the FO has shown it has no excuse for that behavior. Your basically the franchise and you act like that?? Putting all play aside, organizations typically don't like players that don't care. Why would someone come to the game to see a player like that?

He also said other players on the team "have been dogging it too". Anyone seen much evidence of this?

I haven't watch enough games this year to tell. It seems like all the "web gems" have been from Ross and Uggla. Is he referring to Maybin? He's made some plays where you are thinking was that a bad angle or "dogging" it. Maybe he's thinking of Hermida.

There have been a few times this year when I felt Coghlan could run harder both in the OF and on the basepaths but I wouldn't say he was dogging it.

Hanley's just being silly.

I have to laugh a bit.

Usually when you Google (news) "Marlins" one has to wade through pages and pages of stuff about teams they are about to play or teams they just played or former Marlins playing on some other team or the barrage of potshots from the likes of some teenager at Bleacher Report or some Mets fan blog, BUT TODAY OMG! there so many stories I can't even get to the beginning of this morning without going eighteen pages back. lololoololol

You hate seeing someone dig themselves a hole like this but Ramirez' is in it and if he's smart he'll listen to his agent and advisors, swallow his pride and do the right thing by the rest of the club, including apologizing to Fredi to Fredi's satisfaction and his teammates to theirs. He is after all going nowhere, regardless of how hard Jon Henry leans on Epstein to make a call that everyone knows will end up accomplishing nothing except making Henry feel good his name is in the paper linked to yet another attempt to get Hanley "back where he belongs". That and the numerous bloggers from LA or NY or elsewhere with wouldbe trades of 2nd tier or aging players for Ramirez because after all "the Marlins can't afford him anyways".

Hopefully this will be over soon.

When I saw Fredi bench Hanley last night, I assumed that Hanley was going to pull a Jimmy Rollins and admit he was wrong. Boy was I ever wrong.

Having been reading all of today's newspieces, I am surprised that Hanley would be so foolish.

I could say quite a bit, but I'll leave it that I'm disappointed in Hanley, extremely. The Marlins are handling this situation the only way a team can and should handle this situation.

We all knew Hanley was a bit of a diva, after the t-shirt incident saying "Trade Me", to the argument with Uggla last year, to the asking to leave to keep his .300 BA. But this is probably the worst thing Hanley has done. He needs to be benched until he does apologize.

I said earlier that we would have to put up with Hanley's diva ways sometimes, but the comments he has made are uncalled for. The trade talks are absurd right now obviously, but benching him until he at least acknowledges he is in the wrong here needed to be done.

Fantastic post. I feel the exact same way.

Also, Hanley said other players were dogging it.

I guess he didn't stay around after he got benched, because he must've missed Cody Ross getting hit in the foot by a 95 MPH fastball, and a few innings later making an all out diving catch in RF.

That is what playing hurt looks like.

The lack of effort to get the ball doesn't really surprise me. Defense has always been a secondary part of Hanley's game, and while I got heavily criticized for saying Hanley was a major reason why this team was poor defensively just a little while ago, I stand by that. But that can be forgiven somewhat- I just can't forgive the poor reaction to what happened. Hanley needs to grow up, and while I like Fredi's comment that he has 25 men in a uniform to manage, Hanley is undoubtedly the most visible Marlin (although I really can understand Uggla's frustration as they were both outstanding offensive middle infielders for their first couple years) and he needs to be held to a high standard.

Its possible that the injury could have influenced things, in fact it almost certainly did, but I agreed with what Tommy said immediately afterwards that if you are too injured to show any effort on the field, you don't deserve to be on it. This wasn't a matter of not running out a ground ball out at full speed. Several runs scored because of that gaffe, and the entire game would have played out differently if that play didn't happen.

When watching the clip of Fredi approaching Hanley in the dugout, just as Hanley is leaving, it looked like he was mouthing off... When I heard about his comments ripping Fredi and the other players for "dogging it", I wasn't surprised, but I am very disappointed in Hanley... He needs to grow up, if he thinks his sh*t don't stink, then he needs to outdo Albert Pujols offesnively...once he does that, he can walk around like a god, say what he wants, and I probably wouldn't care...

well without hearing anything definitive yet, he was in the dugout cheering the guys on today, and was on the field high-fiving and all after the game... so that would at least suggest that he made some kind of effort to smooth things over, whether that was an apology or whatever.

guys if you havent listened to the actual audio of him talking to the press, I suggest everyone go listen to it. I am not normally a "chicken little" type guy but i have a really bad feeling about this situation. The story tells you what he said but theaudio will tell you how he said it.

So we should expect his teammates to walk around in white t-shirts with: "Hanley, we're tired of your sh*t" written on them with black marker? (I can never get the image of the shirt Hanley made a while back over not wearing jewelery)

I thought Hanley said "other players Jog it" not dog it. The reporter said dog it. With English being his second language I think he may have misunderstood the reporter.

What a stupid, stupid situation. I had no problems with Hanley booting the ball, didn't really have a problem with him dogging it (didn't like it, but it is Hanley and unfortunately I expect him to act like a little Manny every now and then), Fredi did the right thing by benching him and hopefully Volstad and a few others ripped into him a bit after the game. But Hanley and his inflated ego needs to stop dragging this nonsense on and act like a man because this is pathetic. He's not making himself look like "he's right" by complaining that he was hurt and undermining and belittling his boss like he's doing right now. One day he'll hopefully get it through his thick head that it isn't all about him and this team doesn't revolve around his presence. Not a fan of the way Fredi has gone about this today either though, I don't think Hanely owes anyone an apology and certainly shouldn't be forced into it. The team stunk as a whole last night, Hanley can't account for the 7 other guys in the lineup who couldn't hit worth a damn. Crap happens, deal with it and move on. It's already been acknowledged and dealt with so let us please get back to baseball.

Ultimately though I don't see this amounting to much, in a week it'll be done and over and everything will be pretty much as it was until a few months when Hanley acts like Hanley again.

There have been a few times this year when I felt Coghlan could run harder both in the OF and on the basepaths but I wouldn't say he was dogging it.

Hanley's just being silly.

He's being a little sissy. He is the one getting burned for something, and he goes on and tries to justify himself by throwing dirt on the teammates? Intolerable.

Dan Uggla agrees with Florida Marlins manager, but says team still loves Hanley Ramirez

by Joe Capozzi

Hanley Ramirez could be seen high-fiving Cameron Maybin in the dugout after Maybin’s three-run home run today in Florida’s 8-0 win. But that’s as much action as Ramirez got.

As the media left the clubhouse and the Marlins prepared to fly to St. Louis, Ramirez still hasn’t apologized to his teammates. But Wes Helms and Dan Uggla each said they might try to talk to Ramirez one-on-one — perhaps on the team flight tonight or tomorrow.

“This thing is gonna play itself out, Uggla said. “We all love Hanley. We all support what skipper did. This is a small obstacle we’re going to get past and we’re going to move forward.

That’s a big endorsement coming from Uggla. Flashback to September, when he publicly criticized Ramirez for taking himself out of a game against the Braves, citing a sore hamstring.

Uggla, echoing his teammates’ feelings, said he supports manger Fredi Gonzalez’s decision to bench Ramirez indefinitely.

“Does that mean we love Hanley any less? No. We’ve all made mistakes. We’ve all done things. But you move on, you move forward, Uggla said.

Helms said it’s important for Ramirez to apologize. Uggla didn’t care if Hanley does or doesn’t.

“It’s up to him. He’s gonna handle it the way he wants to handle it, Uggla said. “Whichever way he wants to handle it, I’m gonna support him just like I support Fredi for doing what he did yesterday.

Uggla said he’s looking forward to speaking soon one-one-one with his double-play partner.

“I’d like to, if there’s a time we can be alone, because he’s a big part of this team. He’s one of the best players in the game and we need him. That’s the bottom line. I’m gonna love him either way.

Helms said it wasn’t uncomfortable sitting on the bench all day with Ramirez, who’ used to playing all nine innings, “because the other 24 guys, we know what was going on, we knew how it was handled and we know as a team what we have to do. We’re behind each other.

Hanley’s son is behind is father, too.

Ramirez avoided a mob of reporters at his locker after the game, choosing to get dressed in an equipment room in the back. He sneaked to the exit and whispered something to his son.

Hanley Jr. then disappeared though the mob, re-appearing at his dad’s locker where he retrieved dad’s satchel and brought it back out to the exit.

Good to hear Uggla, who is basically a Captain on this team along with Helms are going to both individually talk to Hanley and are going to try settle things on a positive note rather then blowing it up into a huge team fiasco where internal issues turn into negative results on the field.

Like Uggla said, we need Hanley and we all love him just as much once he gets back on the field and produces.
