May 18, 201016 yr This organization has and is going to continue to give Hanley a ton of rope. And he might one day hang himself with it, but that day has not yet come. He dogged it, he got benched. Maybe he gets benched tomorrow too. It shouldn't go any further than that.
May 18, 201016 yr I can't believe some people are actually defending the guy tonight. If his name was Jeremy Hermida, there would have been multiple threads on it, already. Not even Hermida did such a thing here. It's pathetic, and quite frankly, I'd much rather see the guys who want to play even if the one who doesn't want to play is the only superstar on the team.
May 18, 201016 yr Frisaro reported before the game that Hanley was probably going to get a day off anyways, so I doubt he plays tomorrow.
May 18, 201016 yr Can anyone show me the play? I have to see what the big deal is about! I feel left out.
May 18, 201016 yr Can anyone show me the play? I have to see what the big deal is about! I feel left out. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=8077975&topic_id=8878534&c_id=fla I'm so glad I wasn't watching the game at the time, I would have been infuriated.
May 18, 201016 yr I have to say, having watched from the stands tonight, it sure as heck didn't look like hanley was just hurt while he "chased" down that ball in left field. it's not like hanley just missed the ball and was chasing after it - -he'd just kicked the ball into left field. a guy who's just booted a ball is expected to run full bore after it to minimize the effect of his error, injury or no. And lost in the criticism: where the heck was chris coghlan? why didn't coghlan chase after the ball himself?
May 18, 201016 yr Failing to run out a ground ball is more excusable than what he did tonight. I don't think I've seen many cases of a player dogging it worse than that instance. However, I don't think anyone here is suggesting that it go further than the benching. In the second post of this thread, I said that Beinfest should have fined him (if he is contractually allowed to do so), but that was before Hanley was even pulled by Fredi. It seems to me that most people here are simply praising Fredi for the move, as they should be.
May 18, 201016 yr Having watched the clip of the play just now, Hanley did not look like he was hurting on the play...jogging after that ball was inexcusable
May 18, 201016 yr If you look at the video, it seems like he has no problem whatsover sprinting full speed while attempting to get to the ball on the fly. It's right after he boots it that he stops running and starts jogging without hobbling or limping.
May 18, 201016 yr And lost in the criticism: where the heck was chris coghlan? why didn't coghlan chase after the ball himself? Well, Hanley kicked in completely opposite direction of where Chris was running, right when they met. So momentum wise, if Hanley gave up completely and chris ran towards tht ball, it would have been an inside the park home run

Well, Hanley kicked in completely opposite direction of where Chris was running, right when they met. So momentum wise, if Hanley gave up completely and chris ran towards tht ball, it would have been an inside the park home run And once Hanley went for it, Chris really doesn't have to and probably shouldn't. It wouldn't be good if they ran into each other or something.

May 18, 201016 yr Well, whether Coghlan could have also chased after the ball, especially when he saw Hanley doggin it... we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Kudos to Fredi for pulling Hanley out of the game. Can't be worried that it will have a negative effect on Hanley and hasten his departure from South Florida. Gotta be positive and believe it will have a beneficial effect. :thumbup to Fredi
May 18, 201016 yr Also of interest, in an article on mlb.com, Fredi said that Barden is battling an ankle issue but managed to play the remainder of the game http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100517&content_id=10121486&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Hanley was the one who should've chased that down; I'm sure Coghlan wasn't expecting the superstar to take the night off, either.

May 18, 201016 yr Also, the Uggla incident was completely different. That was perceived as a case of Hanley having an extremely prolonged slump and sitting out to preserve his batting title all while the Marlins' play-off chances were in doubt. None of those factors were at play here. It was a completely different scenario. This might have been a lose-lose situation from the perspective of spectators, but not in the context of actually playing the game. Not to mention the fact that his visible pain earlier in the game from the shin injury would make it difficult to brand Hanley as faking it. Hanley has been dogging it down the 1st base line quite a bit lately. At the games I haven't been the only one noticing it. Wasn't hurt then. And he has a rep for doing it. Two years ago he took himself out of the last game of the season, an inportant game to us BTW, to ensure he kept that average above .300. Last year's crap was well documented. Barden has a slightly sprained ankle. Cody took a 90-something fastball off his knee. See them dogging it? Don't try to make excuses for him. Sit the prima donna again Tuesday. Or let Uggla take him aside and explain things to him.
May 18, 201016 yr If Hanely was that injured to the point where he jogged after that ball, he should have asked to be removed from the game. And then he has people bitching at him for not caring enough to play through injury, just like when he asked to be removed from a game last year and Uggla called him out It's lose-lose for him. I'm not talking about what is right in the eyes of this forum. I couldn't care less. His decision to either dog it or play through something that prevented him from running cost this team. That's what matters in the end. He hurt the team's chances of winning. When is everyone going to realize that Hanley doesn't give a rat's ass about this team? He never has and he probably never will. He certainly doesn't care about the fans. He can't even sign autographs for little kids because he think's he's too damn important. The only person Hanley cares about is Hanley. I can't wait until he's donning a Mets hat and pulling this same shi* with a $200 million contract. I just hope someone clocks him in the face and we see him sporting a nice shiner like Scott Olsen that year. That's what he deserves. Because that's retarded. I do think he went a bit overboard. But he has a point. However, Hanley will be sporting a big "B" on his cap before his career is over. He's still a kid. And a spoiled one at that. He needs the dicipline right now.

And lost in the criticism: where the heck was chris coghlan? why didn't coghlan chase after the ball himself? To defend Chris......He was running in on the ball. Hanley kicked it and took off after it. Not even sure Chris saw the kick. But when Hanley took off after it then it was out of Chris's hands. How was he supposed to know Hanley was going to dog it so bad? And would you really want a soph to show he out-hustles Mr Superstar?

In fact, I brought up the fact that he wasn't running out ground balls, giving up on at bat's, etc....on this forum a couple of days ago and got a lot of heat for it. I'm a big Hanley fan, but he looks sort of apathetic in some games.
