July 31, 201016 yr Marlins Actively Seeking Relief HelpBy Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30 at 10:06pm CST]The Marlins have been looking for relievers all season long and they're still hoping to add to their bullpen, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Even after trading Jorge Cantu away, the 51-51 Marlins are apparently looking to make an acquisition. Frisaro suggests the team has a particularly strong need for left-handed relievers. Many consider the trade market for relief pitching thin and overpriced, and the Marlins have avoided it so far. They signed Armando Benitez, only to release him soon afterwards, and relied on their own arms. Marlins relievers have combined for a 4.51 ERA this season.
July 31, 201016 yr If team could not get help right now then don't bother. Just keep using AAA/AA guys and hope bats wake up for good.
July 31, 201016 yr Author The line of teams wanting relief help is very long, im guessing. Yep...every team wants as much relief as possible...and relievers, IMO, are overpriced this year
July 31, 201016 yr I'm sure Billy Beane is going to be asking for the world in return for him, but depending on what we'd have to give up, Craig Breslow would be an awesome acquisition. He gets both lefties and righties out, and he becomes a free agent in 2014, meaning he's club-controlled past this year. Arbritration eligible in 2011. I'm sure there are plenty of teams interested in him, though.
July 31, 201016 yr Trying to get help at the deadline for the bullpen is just not worth it. The way GM's try and price their sought-after relievers, it would be more economical to find starting pitchers that are expendable and switch them to the pen. I'd love to see us get bullpen help, but last year teams were asking for the guys who are now our starting right and left fielders, for guys that would come in and pitch 30 innings at most.

Yeah....for example, Toronto wants an elite prospect for Downs who will be a FA after the season...not worth it
July 31, 201016 yr Only if it's more than a 1 year rental. We need to look towards 2012. With that said, we shouldn't be overpaying for anything right now.
July 31, 201016 yr If we're determined to add a lefty, one guy to look at might be Sean Marshall of the Cubs. He got shelled tonight like the rest of the Cubs pen, but he's been a very solid pitcher for them despite being constantly shifted from the pen to starting and vice versa. I don't know what we could offer the Cubs that could make this worth it for them though. Maybe Martinez from AA if they trade Ryan Theriot as rumored could happen.

July 31, 201016 yr i think its ridiculous the fish are getting crap for trying to better their team yet the mets arent when we have the same record while one is on the way up, and one they way down. edit - maybe i read too much in to that... i just woke up, im cranky

Yeah....for example, Toronto wants an elite prospect for Downs who will be a FA after the season...not worth it It depends. He is a Type A free agent where he'd easily get a multi year deal and recoup you two first round picks. There is more to Downs than his talent. Honestly, he's worth James or Hand as a centerpiece because they are in A ball and you can just redraft that same player with your 2011 draft compensation. You dont really lose anything. But if they want a guy MLB ready like Morrison, that doesn't work out. I'm just saying. I like the idea of moving A ball for guys like Downs. Our MLB core is set for a few years, and we can trade 19 year olds and draft 18 year olds in 2011. What have you lost?

July 31, 201016 yr What about trading Leo? We could probably get an absurd haul for him. And we do have several plus arms coming up in the next 2 years to soften the blow of losing him. Plus he frees up more salary if he's gone. And his value has to be really high right now.

There's also no reason to trade Leo now I guess, since he's under team control next year.
July 31, 201016 yr What a great idea to seek relief help NOW!!! I guess the first 100 games of the season weren't enough of a proving period to establish that this area of the team could use a boost :banghead With the exception of the Urbina trade these mid season deals are fairly useless for the Marlins and they come with too great a cost (e.g. Adrian Gonzalez)!

I think we should be acquiring for next year, not shipping things off.

July 31, 201016 yr jaysonst We could have a fun hour coming up. One club says volume of calls is "insane" right now. I've had 3 "gotta gos" in last 20 minutes! well even if we don't add anything, it should be an interesting deadline!
