Posted August 27, 201014 yr Stephen #Strasburg will probably need Tommy John surgery. #Nats RT @BrentSGambill Nats Official: Stephen Strasburg significant tear in ulnar collateral ligament. Tommy John surgery. #fb #Nationals just revealed Stephen Strasburg has torn ligament in his elbow and probably will need Tommy John Surgery. Sad news for the sport! Honestly, with the way he throws, who didn't see this coming?
August 27, 201014 yr The moral here is that if you are a pitcher who does something that seems too good to be true, it probably is.
August 27, 201014 yr I heard the Nats think that it was just the pitch he threw but the pitch he threw was a change up. That pitch is not hard on your arm. I think the tear was there and it just tore more. Id be kinda crushed if i was a Nats fan.
August 27, 201014 yr LOL! But in all seriousness, that's some suckish news for both Stras and the Nats. I'm guessing he'll be done for the entirety of 2011.

Yup, early estimates are saying 12-18 months. Another blow for the Nats is the lost ticket sales for 2011 as a result of no Strasburg if you presume the jump in attendances for his starts this year would continue on into next. Say there is an extra 20,000 at the ballpark per start (which was true often this year) and taking an average ticket price of $20 for example and 16 home starts (again, a rough guess) and you are talking not far off $6.5m. A considerable difference.

August 27, 201014 yr this is probably good in the long run for him get it out of the way early like JJ
August 27, 201014 yr A lot of people are probably saying the Nationals learned their lesson, but what were they supposed to do...pass on him just to avoid something like this? A lot of people saw it coming, but it was a risk worth taking for the Nationals. I feel so bad for that organization, just when the fans were finally given something to be excited about it is ripped away from them. As Iowa said, hopefully he bounces back from it like JJ.
August 27, 201014 yr Could view it as 1 year of sacrifice for potentially 10 solid years, something like that?
August 27, 201014 yr Some pitchers come back from Tommy John with even more speed on their fastballs. Can you even imagine if that happened with Strasburg?

Should you not pass on a pyramid scheme just because the returns look really good?
August 27, 201014 yr Just watching the way he throws and how hard he throws, I knew this would happen when he was drafted

August 27, 201014 yr I really hope he doesn't become Mark Prior. I actually want to see Strasburg succeed. It would be good for baseball.

In my mind the bigger risk is wasting a #1 overall pick. Obviously the financial aspects have import. He's more like a pennystock, though, or a junk bond. High-risk, high-reward. A pyramid scheme is, by definition, not going to ever pan out. Strasburg certainly at least has the potential to work out [in some capacity].

That's not the point, I wasn't trying to make a perfect analogy. All I am saying is that when that pick is so ridiculously important you should use it wisely, not use it on something that everyone is telling you "waaaatch oooouuut!". Puma, we talked about this before he was drafted, didn't we?
August 27, 201014 yr It actually pans out if you get OUT early enough :lol I agree that the pick is important, but I still think they made the right decision. He's lightyears ahead of the rest of the top 6 picks in that draft, even with the injury.

And no, he's not light years ahead of anything if he's Mark Prior. Maybe ahead of them in salary.

Realize I said "if" not "because".
