According to MarlinsLou, he doesn't think Badenhop is a lock to stay; he's a credible poster, so I won't include the Hopper (although I wish he'd stay). Point of this thread? We got the right-handed hitters downpact late in games. LETS GET A COUPLE OF LOOGY'S NOW! This bullpen could be the best pen the Marlins have had in years. At least a bullpen with some realistic expectations heading into the year; when was the last time that happened?
November 14, 201015 yr No more experiments, thank god. Get two lefties and a long relief pitcher, and we're actually set for the bullpen. And the best part is if someone like Sanches fails, we have incredible depth in the minors like Ceda or Marinez.

The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded. xFIP Expected Fielding Independent Pitching. This is an experimental stat that adjusts FIP and "normalizes" the home run component. Research has shown that home runs allowed are pretty much a function of flyballs allowed and home park, so xFIP is based on the average number of home runs allowed per outfield fly. November 14, 201015 yr Why would you get rid of the Hopper? Because he hit arbitration and the Marlins will have to guarantee his salary. He is not exactly a world beater and that sort of commitment to your 6-7 guy in your pen, when relievers are historically volatile, is not a sound investment even if it only costs you $750,000 or so. I will be shocked if Hopper is on the team. I suspect he is DFA'd in the next two months unless somebody actually wants him in a trade. I think the right handers are done - Hensley, Webb, Mujica, Sanches, Sanabia.... with Mharinez, Ceda, Cishek, and veteran minimums fighting Sanabia who could open in AAA as a starter. I say Sanabia, as I am confident they bring in a lefty starter and choose Volstad as the 5. --- As for the lefthanders, there is no way they are counting on Richardson Erick. They got him to stash in AAA as he has an option left. He is a fringe guy, just like Hunter Jones. We'll probably see him.... but it's not something to count on. West and Jennings are internal options, but I think they will develop them for at least half the season in AAA first, especially West as a starter. Expect two more lefty acquisitions.
November 14, 201015 yr We need lefties with the Braves and Phillies. I still worry about the pen because these guys can go from great one year to crap the next for some reason. I remember Jon Daniels saying how assembling a pen was so hard because guys go from great to bad and vice versa from year to year. I am happy that we aren't throwing crap against a wall and seeing what sticks.
November 14, 201015 yr While I will keep my expectations for the bullpen in check as year to year performance can vary so much for relievers, I am certainly optimistic with several of these guys, and not having to rely on the old "see what sticks" strategy.
November 14, 201015 yr How much do you all think Ohman will go for? I recently read an article that said the bullpen of this year's FA class is really really deep, which should prove to our advantage when building an affordable bullpen.

November 14, 201015 yr Dustin Richardson is being looked at to be an arm in the bullpen and my best guess is he could try to fill in as one of the LOOGY roles. Another LH Relief pitcher spot could go to Sean West if he doesn't make the rotation as I don't think he will. There are also some quality arms in the minors like Jennings or Hand who could step up and try to fil in.
