It's offical: Dominguez to get shot at ST

Featured Replies

Matt Dominguez will get shot at 3B in spring. "Hes gonna show us if he’s ready or not. We’re going to give him that opportunity,'' Beinfest

I still don't think he makes the club out of Spring, but it'll be interesting to see how he performs.

Cool but I dont think he wins it right out the gates, just my guess. We'll see

Plus it depends a lot on if we can get a CF pickup somewhere. if we solidfy CF, we then have Cogs, Boni, and Infante competing between 2B and 3B... thus negating the necessity to bring in Dominguez too soon. Just sayin...

to be honest i dont know whats all the hype for dominguez. his fielding % was .955 and he didnt hit good either

FLD % Means nothing really, the kid has great range and a good arm.

He hit for solid power but not for average, he's also only barely 21 and should develop well.

He hit pretty well in the playoffs, but its a small sample size. Hoping he remembers how to hit like that

I'm scared of this team flopping terribly and destroying a lot of hype going into the new stadium.

I really hope he makes the team. I don't want a Bonifacio at 2B/Infante at 3B situation.

I really hope this doesnt mean Coghlan to CF... glad to hear that Dominguez will get a shot but trading Uggla for another 2B was kinda stupid. Should've gone CF.

It does.

It's one thing to have sub par defense. It's another thing to have sub par defenders playing out of position in tougher positions.

It doesn't have to. Infante can play CF better than Coghlan can, so he might get a shot there.

There's an interview in the palm beach post newspaper Marlins blog about this. Infante will either start at 2B or 3B, depending on what Dominguez does in ST. Beinfest said Dominguez and Bonifacio would battle for a starting spot in Spring Training, in the interview. There's a good chance Coghlan is the CF'er next year (even if that's not what everyone wants to see...myself included).

That's just it though... Infante is a good 2nd baseman. Why waste his defense on something he's not made out for? Then you have sub par Coghlan at 2nd and sub par Infante in CF. I'd rather have mediocre Coghlan in CF and good Infante at 2B.

The infield defense should be fine.

The outfield defense should be pretty bad, though. Coghlan in CF along with Morrison in LF sounds like quite a nightmare to me, but Beinfest is apparently fine with it.

Because Coghlan could be average at second and Infante could be average at CF instead of having someone who is going to completely suck at CF.

Eh... I'm more worried about the infield to be honest. Buck... Hanley is barely average... if Coghlan would've indeed been at 2nd that's hardly average... Gaby does a good job but he's simply not made for a 1st baseman... I cant comment on Dominguez's defense though...

I mean... what do you think is more important? A strong infield or a strong outfield? Purely dependent on the pitcher on the mound.

Considering the pitchers we have on this team, it's pretty much balanced. Beinfest has acquired 4 relievers this offseason; only 1 of them is a groundball pitcher (Webb). Mujica, Dunn, and Richardson are FB pitchers.

At the end of the day, both are pretty important. I'd actually say outfield defense, honestly. If you have people screwing up in the OF, it leads to more extra base hits/extra bases allowed. Plus, we have one of the best infield coaches in the game (Perry Hill) so I expect all of the infielders to get somewhat better, anyway. (we're not "bad" at any infield position, especially if Hanley decides that he wants to play defense...Hanley's defense issues aren't lack of ability to me; it's lack of care/pride in defense. He's proven that he can, at the very least, be an average defensive SS in past years)

I think all of this shows a lack of direction from the FO. We have been told for months that Coghlan was to move to 3B and he should start preparing for this. Now after a seemingly impulse trade (in terms of returns) Coghlan is being moved to CF.

Get a plan and stick to it! (Preferably one involving signing players that suit the position....)

Dominguez is reportedly a magician with the glove ( Mike Lowell calibre) however his batting skills still need polishing He is one player who should play triple A ball without a doubt

The Marlins have seen jand worked with Coghlan at 2B throughout his minor league career.

It's pretty obvious that the Marlins do not think that Coghlan can play 2B in the Majors.

Otherwise, they would give him the job and put Infante at 3B or CF depending on what Dominguez shows.

So Coghlan is a minus defender unless and until he can drastically improve in the outfield.

Dominguez to get shot?! D:

Someone protect him!

It's just a terrible thread title all around. "IT'S OFFICIAL!!!!" as if he's been handed the third-base job permanently
