It's offical: Dominguez to get shot at ST

isnt Joe Crede still available?

Yep.

am i the only one that thinks signing him to a minor league deal isnt a bad idea?

Didn't he have health issues that forced him to sit out some time last year ? or was he out of baseball last year, altogether ?

He was out of baseball but there's no reason to believe he still can't play great defense at 3B and hit sufficiently. He got signed to a minor league deal by the Rockies but didn't show up to camp. He probably wants a major league deal but the closer we get to the regular season, the more I think he'll settle for a minor league deal.

He would be great to have on a major league roster as long as hes healthy. IMO i think he would be a good fit for us although his defense isnt top notch. He can be the veteran presence some people look for and he probably still has a good bat. Hopefully we can sign him whether he starts over Dominguez or backs him up

I plead with everyone, to not get excited at spring numbers.

If Dominguez hits like Hermida, it's a win.

Like normal Hermida? or 2nd half 2007?

Normal 2008-2009 Hermida.

2nd half 2007 Hermida offense with Dominguez defense is what I like to call "Evan Longoria," i.e., a top 10 player in all of baseball. We won't get that lucky. I'm hoping for Chase Headley that grows into some more power.

I don't want Dominguez name linked with that guy.

I'd take a .259/.335/.417 (.752 .OPS -- Hermida's career line) line from Dominguez with his defense. That's a valuable player with upside, in Dominguez' case.

Me too, but I think we're undervaluing his offense. With his new mechanics at the plate, I think he looks much more relaxed in his stance and swing. And, it has reflected on his play. I think the Dominguez we're used to see throughout his minor league career has been stashed away post August 2010.

Look at his hitting mechanics before Mallee fixed it:

then, look at it after....

Big difference.

Huge difference. He's staying much lower and striding in to his swings a lot better and smoother. Easier said than taught/done. Mallee has done some great work with him.

I'm hoping more Mike Lowell 2003-2004

Charlie Sheen would call that winning.

I doubt he will ever match Lowell's awesome contact rates which drastically impacted Lowell's average. Likewise, Lowell probably walked more also. Dominguez is likely to whiff give or take 125 annually. I don't see the projection into a premier 3B offensively. Casey Blake, maybe. That would be pretty awesome actually.

Dominguez progression from around the time he changed his swing:

AUG (19- 31) 2010

44 PA | .230 AVG | 2 HR | 11.4% BB% | 17.9% K% | 5 R | 13 RBI

SEPT 2010

26 PA | .273 AVG | 0 HR | 15.6% BB% | 22.7% K% | 3 R | 5 RBI

POSTSEASON 2010

30 PA | .296 AVG | 3 HR | 11.1% BB% | 13.3% K% | 7 R | 8 RBI

SPRING TRAINING 2011

19 PA | .400 AVG | 2 HR | 15.8% BB% | 13.3% K% | 3 R | 10 RBI

Very optimistic about Dominguez hitting ability. I think he can maintain the good contact and patience abilities with the pop he already has. I think his AVG will also fall into place when everything contact is improved.

I'm hoping for Chase Headley that grows into some more power.

I will take that. Matty D doesn't have to be Superman. That guy is over in right field :thumbup. Just be Captain America.:D

That sounded like Warlock Latin!

Wouldn't surprise me to see him in a Phillies uniform. Soon.

I can say that at this point in ST it is a lock that Dominguez will make the 25 man roster and will be at 3rd base on openning day very little can keep that from happening...The question will be if he can hold onto it throughout the season ...At this moment he seems ML ready, he seems comfortable at the plate but all rookies to some degree hit a wall like Stanton did last year and that will be the true litmus test for Dominguez in how he responds. It's still early in ST but the questions surrounding Dominguez have been answered as best as they can so far. Time to just throw him in the line of fire and trust his pedigree and talent...Barring injuries we have found our 3rd baseman for the next 10 years and the future starts now

I'm hoping for Chase Headley that grows into some more power.

Waiting for someone to start a thread called: If each starting member of the Marlins was a superhero, who would they be?
