Wise can't hit. No matter how great of a defender he is, he still can't hit. Unless i'm missing something?

D'Antona is kind of curious, he did pretty well in japan if he played something other then 1B then he would have a really nice upside,

He actually hasn't been that great of a defender the last two years, either. +0 2009, +0 2010.

This is just moves to fill out the depleted roster I don't expect anything to come of it but I guess Wise has a chance of making the Marlin's roster be it a slight one

They also signed Chris Lubanski.

Can anyone tell me why this kid is undesirable? He hit pretty respectably last year in AAA. Why would the Jays just leave this kid out there?

oh cool, AAA. see: Dallas McPherson :confused

add Frank Mata, Darin Downs, Victor Garate, Ruben Gotay, and Josh Koreger to the list of guys signed.

It'd be only logical to give a guy a shot at the MLB level once he's doing well at AAA. This guy hasn't gotten a shot once, seemingly half due to injury and the other half to I don't know what. At least Dallas McPherson was called up...

i know he was obviously up at Anaheim, but Dallas never played a regular season game with the Marlins right?

EDIT: Scratch that, I looked it up... he was a September call-up and went just 2-for-11 after leading AAA in HR's with 42. Seems like Dallas was always just one of those "AAAA" players who was too good for AAA but can't seem to fit at the big league level long term.

McPherson played 11 games in 2008

i don't know if this was brought up anywhere else, but we apparently have also offered jose veras a minor league deal to return for next season. apparently 5 other teams have also offered him minor league deals as well. i just don't see him fitting into our bullpen when we already have like 8 guys for 7 spots

Interesting. I don't see it working for him down here but I'm ok with this, almost as a small reward for him. Because, as bad as our pen was last year, he ended up being halfway decent when used correctly. If we didn't overhaul our pen the way we did, he likely would have been assured a spot in this year's pen. Seems fair to at least offer him an outside shot of making it in this year.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quotes ESPN that Veras has signed:

According to ESPNDeportes, the Pirates and reliever Jose Veras have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Veras, 30, was 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA in 48 relief appearances for the Marlins last season. He had 54 strikeouts to 29 walks in those appearances.

According to the report, Veras will earn a base of $1 million plus incentives if he makes the big league roster; if not, he will make $15,000 each month in the minors. Also according to ESPNDeportes, he chose the Pirates after considering the Giants, Rockies, Twins, Marlins, and Rays.

Not surprising that we weren't willing to pay a mill for him on our ML roster considering our current batch of BP locks and prospects. Not surprising that nobody other than the Pirates would either, their BP mainstays so far being Hanrahan, Meek and Resop. Now, plus Veras, apparently. Good luck to them, they're gonna need it.

That's actually not a bad backend of the bullpen.

However, they're gonna need the luck because their rotation sucks.

Well, perhaps not a bad back-end. Too bad there's no front-end. And yeah, their rotation will stink it up, so they're totally hopeless.

To go a bit off-topic, Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh.

They sucked for 8 years before they opened a new stadium 10 years ago and it made no difference whatsoever, they continued to suck each and every year thereafter. They haven't won anything in 18 years other than an average of 68 games per year. They haven't finished better than 3rd in 13 years, averaging about 5th out of 6.

Last year, they drew less than 900 more fans per game in a relatively new baseball-only stadium than we did in an ancient football dump of a stadium we can't wait to get out of. No big surprise that the abysmal ownership in Pittsburgh continues to pick up Marlins rejects - Penn, Leroux, Donnelly and Resop just last year. Now Veras.

Pittsburgh is really the gold standard to which any so-called baseball writer should have to refer when attempting to denigrate cheap or incompetent management.

Who chooses to sign with Pittsburgh if the Giants Marlins Twins and Rays are all apparently interested in you too? Sounds like BS to me. Or he's just sure he sucks and knows that if he signs with those other teams, he has no shot to make the team and is probably DFA'd the last week of spring anyways. So he figures the Pirates are his only shot of actually making an opening day roster. sucks for him.

Well, look at what ... posted as their bullpen. Veras will have a shot to close or at least setup there. Veras would have had an outside shot to be the 7th man in the pen here.

I'm not sure I understand what that means; it sounds like something Yogi Berra would say.
