Reality Check Thread

Featured Replies

reality is...we ARE a playoff team provided JJ actually stays healthy and Hanley returns to some semblence of his usual self. You have to keep in mind there's an extra WC now as well. I don't think the fish are quite done yet but I HIGHLY doubt they get Fielder. Maybe they'll go after an Edwin Jackson or a Wandy Rodriguez. Gaby isn't a bad guy to have at first base - we can't have superstars at every position.

As with almost every team there's uncertainty in each season.

I can almost guarantee they will make the playoffs if everyone sticks to their normal level of performance and remains healthy. This team is good enough to accomplish that because they were doing just that last season until the injuries started piling up and this team is better than last years version.

To me the wildcard in all of this is Bonifacio - is he for real? He certainly played at a high level for the second half of the season and proved it wasn't just a hot stretch however we've seen that act before (Coghlan). Some of the ESPN talking heads are saying he's a terrible CF. I fail to see how exactly he plays a terrible CF. He obviously has the wheels to track any ball down and he has a surprisingly strong arm for a little guy. I'm guessing these guys, particularly Keith Law didn't really watch many marlins games.

I think Hanley has to be as much a wild card. How does learning a new position affect your ability to bounce back from batting sub .250?

He was injured all of last season. If he is healthy his bat will be back to normal. The only issue he's going to have with the position change is fielding it.

Yeah, it's not as if he's just this great defender either. He might actually be improved at 3B. Who knows

I don't get it. Why wouldn't they want to play here? With the amount of talent and money they were offering, it seems like the only thing holding them back was how the Marlins treated their players in the past.

CJ Wilson turned down $100 million from #Marlins to go home #Angels http://shar.es/oIGHD

why does everyone think we cant get fielder? Are you guys listening to the supposed offers we sent to Pujols and CJ? 275 and 100.. thats insane

Because the organization doesn't seem interested in Fielder.

It's the ****ing catalina wine mixer no-trade clause.

CJ is easy to understand. He wanted to play in his hometown. I respect him a lot for giving up all that money to go home.

Yeah, CJ not coming here doesn't really annoy me. I just hope the Marlins go to a cheaper player in Oswalt or Rodriguez, no questions asked.

I think Oswalt presents the highest reward out of all the remaining pitching options.

Signing high-priced free agents is kind of pointless when it just bumps us up to third place in the NL East instead of dead last.

3rd place in the NL East might be enough to make the playoffs.

what would oswalt command?

A 3 year deal would be my guess.. maybe 10 mil per year?

Then again, I didn't think Buehrle would get a 4th year or that we would offer a 6th to Wilson so who TF really knows.

I think Oswalts price moved up to about 14 million or so per year considering the offers we made to CJ and Mark.

That's Mark Buehrle money.

Oswalt isn't getting that. He's not even the most intriguing arm remaining on the market, at this point.

I would have thought a 2 year deal for him early on.. but then Harang and Capuano got 2 years so one has to think he'll get a 3rd year.

Who is more intriguing at this point? Darvish is going to wind up at about 100 million when it's all said and done. Teams who need a starter will probably be more willing to overpay a little for Oswalt who has shown what he can do over Darvish. Unless of course we're talking about the Yankees or Red Sox. Jackson is an intriguing option and will be cheaper than Roy but he's so up and down.

I'm excited. If this is what the offseason looks like, I can't wait to see what happens right before the trade deadline next season.

Nothing will happen.

We're not serious.

Think Loria is serious now? :)

I kid, I kid.

I know I'll never live that thread down. But never before has being wrong looked so glorious. :geek

Edwin Jackson. And I don't think he'll be cheaper than Oswalt.

Oswalt isn't quite the same pitcher he once was, and he has back problems that will probably scare some teams away.

Jackson is a 200 inning guy with upside. I imagine the market for him will be pretty nice now that the top two have signed. Plus, Edwin Jackson is a Boras client.
