Reality Check Thread

I hope we're not done..

Based on the moves made thus far this offseason by every team, I'd say you're overreacting.

The Phillies have gotten worse. The Braves have basically remained the same (they'll probably trade Jurrijens and Prado later on). The Nationals were interested in everyone and have gotten no one thus far. The Mets suck.

On paper, this is what is happening.

1. It's December.

2. Our team could compete in the NL East right now.

Very true, as long as key players (Reyes, Hanley, JJ) can stay healthy. Even more so if Hanley performs more so to his talent ability than last season.

Yeah. Last season we were competing until Hanley got hurt. Even with his crap production. A healthy JJ AND Hanley + these upgrades...its going to be fun.

Weren't we in 1st until the worst June in sports history hit? That was around the same time JJ went down. We needed a solid ace to come in and stop the bleeding. Never happened.

We were 1st in WC, yeah.

And JJ's injury was mid-May, we were good for the next couple weeks, then June.

Good piece. Yes, I think what we got was for the best. At least we have a stop gap with both Reyes and Buehrle. If JJ gets hurt there is another consistent arm to pick up the slack again. Javier was that at the end of the year. Reyes covers up for Hanley. If Reyes gets hurt we can move him to SS. If Hanley gets hurt, Boni can play 3B. At least we have more options and the sky won't automatically fall.

Signing high-priced free agents is kind of pointless when it just bumps us up to third place in the NL East instead of dead last.

yeah we probably should just do nothing and sit on our hands. Hell why even field a team.

GTFO Giz with your reasoning and sensibility and deep breaths.

I'm just disappointed I'll only be able to come down to watch a game or two in their new stadium. Should be a lot of fun.

Well I see it like this,Angels got Pjuols and C.J, and Marlins got Reys and Bur-all

I for one think AP is over rated and im happy with Reyes, younger with speed and a good bat, and Bur-all, well I watched himalot on mlb tv and he going to be a tough cookie.

But I think we just need one more to give us that push over the edge

reality is...we ARE a playoff team provided JJ actually stays healthy and Hanley returns to some semblence of his usual self. You have to keep in mind there's an extra WC now as well. I don't think the fish are quite done yet but I HIGHLY doubt they get Fielder. Maybe they'll go after an Edwin Jackson or a Wandy Rodriguez. Gaby isn't a bad guy to have at first base - we can't have superstars at every position.

As with almost every team there's uncertainty in each season.

I can almost guarantee they will make the playoffs if everyone sticks to their normal level of performance and remains healthy. This team is good enough to accomplish that because they were doing just that last season until the injuries started piling up and this team is better than last years version.

To me the wildcard in all of this is Bonifacio - is he for real? He certainly played at a high level for the second half of the season and proved it wasn't just a hot stretch however we've seen that act before (Coghlan). Some of the ESPN talking heads are saying he's a terrible CF. I fail to see how exactly he plays a terrible CF. He obviously has the wheels to track any ball down and he has a surprisingly strong arm for a little guy. I'm guessing these guys, particularly Keith Law didn't really watch many marlins games.

We have a closer, a legit lead off hitter, and a reliable innings eater and number 2. Also it will be Stanton's 3rd year so im hoping for better things and this time LoMo will be healthy and hopefully s will Hanley. Hanley is my only concern, I dont want to deal with the position change drama but honestly we did low ball him. Nothing to say about it considering he cant play the position that well but you hope for the best I guess

Good points. And to the "this is a third place team" boo-hoo-ers -- there's a second freaking wild card. That increases the Marlins' playoffs chances in addition to the new players we're getting.

As for Boni, his season really took off when McKeon told him, essentially, "You're my guy. Run when you want." Ozzie should use the same philosophy with him. I love him at the top of the order with Reyes.

You do know we were a pretty competitive team that had to play without JJ, and for vast parts of the season without LoMo and Hanley right? We have a nice 1-2-3 in JJ, Buehr, and Anibal and the offense is well balanced. This isnt a MLB The Show or 2K game where you can just expect us to throw money at someones face and expect them to come. Loria went out of his way for huge names and they were indeed serious

I think Hanley has to be as much a wild card. How does learning a new position affect your ability to bounce back from batting sub .250?

why does everyone think we cant get fielder? Are you guys listening to the supposed offers we sent to Pujols and CJ? 275 and 100.. thats insane

They do not want Fielder.

I still cant see why either, I get Gaby is a good 1b and that its taken, but seriously, we may need more than him to compete with the talented SP in this division. They should at least throw in an offer if they have the money
