Opening Day Post Game

Featured Replies

As for Hanley, it was his first game at 3B in the regular season.

While that play was embarrassing, he later also perfectly executed on a bunt play. Barry Larkin seems to think he can win the gold glove sometime soon, for whatever that's worth.

And while we're at it, since everyone loves to criticize his body language when it looks like he doesn't care, his body language tonight was awesome. So there's that.

Barring injuries, I couldn't have imagined this going much worse. Every bad tendency of this ballclub in recent years showed up tonight in front of America.

Josh Johnson not pitching that well is not a bad tendency we've seen over the years.

Being no-hit for six innings is not a bad tendency we've seen over the years.

You pessimisticly overreacting seems to be a tendency, though.

The story of this game was that Josh Johnson pitched more like Kyle Lohse and Kyle Lohse pitched more like Josh Johnson. Fluky things happen over the course of one game. Hence the reason why they play 162.

THEY DO?! Oh, thank God, I thought we were done.

#Overreacting

Single most awesome day of my life. loved the energy ... Until jj started giving up oodles of hits and Hanley's snafu early in the game.

I swear I shed a tear as I walked around the promenade and then watched the roof open.

Oh yeah... The hr sculpture is AWESOMELY EPIC. when they fired it up at the start of the ceremonies I was blown away.

Watched the game at a bar in my hat and orange Stanton jersey, decided to drink heavily after the first inning (my plastic cups didn't last long as I keep crumpling them after JJ gave up 2 out hits) - all I heard was a room full of Phillies fans bitch about the "ugly" new uniforms, at one point I yelled at one obnoxious Phillies fan loudly across the bar to shut the f*** up and was ready to start it up with him if necesary, that was my evening

Despite JJ giving up so many hits I didn't think he was actually pitching that poorly...he was generating a ton of groundballs..or at least it seemed that way..they just happened to find holes. That's usually a good sign. I am concerned about his lower velocity however, but then again he may just need a few more starts. (someone mentioned him hitting 100mph in Cincy...they are notorious for having a jacked up radar gun there as I seriously doubt Chapman can hit 103 or 104)

As far as the rest of the team, I'm still concerned about Boni because I think last year may have been a fluke and he didn't have the greatest of springs. I'm also VERY concerned about how large the park seemed to play. I would have put money down just by hearing the sound of the ball coming off Stanton's bat that that one pitch was crushed and out and it didn't even really make the warning track below that monstrous wall. I think HR's are going to be at a serious premium in the park.

I worry they are going to get off to a slow start because if I remember correctly they have a bad record up there in Cincy as well? And to whoever said the Astros are easy to beat...ugh...one game at a time..the astros are not going to go 0-162

JJ gave up 10 hits-matching his career high. I'd bet on him turning in a better performance next week, albeit he'll be facing the Phillies. His velocity was there, the problem was simply his feel/movement as he served up hangers/lifeless fastballs.

Hanley is athletic enough to handle 3B & will get it down packed with some time. If you really expected him to excell at his new position without any hurdles then you were fooling yourself.

LoMo looked overmatched by the new field dimensions as he took a number of pour routes. Similar to Hanley however, there should be no doubt he'll get a hang of things as he gets familiar with the cavernous dimensions.

It's all a work in progress. We've formed the talent to be able to perform at a high level & it's simply a matter of time before we start seeing the results.

I had to deal with the most annoying women behind me who kept nagging about the Jumbotron. "Where's this? Where's that? I can't see where this is...." She actually asked where the batting averages were. The thing is huge, lady!

She also kept dissing Hanley (she's a Marlins fan), saying he was lazy and didn't care. She actually suggested we move him to RF (because Stanton is obviously crap) and that he get injured. At that point I turned around and gave her the most disgusted look. She actually called Hanley lazy on the Furcal infield hit that he played perfectly.

Other than that and the loss, it was an awesome experience.

Hopefully all the excitement is gone and the players will get back to playing baseball. So much going on last night.

Lets see how the Fish do against the Reds, new series, new team.

I think the press and stuff really got to them. An article last night from MlB I believe really stressed that, at least with JJ. You got to think, this is the most press any of them have ever endured in their career, second to Sunlife closing.

I half expected us to lose last night because of how much press we've been getting.

I'm definitely coming back again this summer so I can bring my gf into the Marlins family.

This was actually a very one-sided baseball cat-fight. So to speak.

:lol

You won, even though she probably won't ever realize it.

Hanley had a brain fart on that one ground ball but was pretty awesome defensively the rest of the game. Lomo is a mess. I'm not sure if the wind coming through the window was screwing with the ball but the routes he took were very bad. He looked lost.

Lomo did look bad in the OF. He did look like his knee was bothering him on a couple of the grounders he had to run down. I'll give him the wind excuse on the fly balls but not on the grounders that got to him. His routes were bad.He did have two good swings though.

I know we lost THE opener in the NEW park, but it's just one game in the season.

790 interviewed Joe Frisaro who commented

  • the batters were looking for homeruns to light up the HR contraption, swinging for the fences and didn't concentrate on just getting on base.
  • Lohse had a no hitter going and hard to break that when someone is in the zone
  • thought LoMo was fine
  • liked the new park (although everyone wants to call it a stadium)

My question is why ALI throwing out the first pitch?? Why not someone connected to BASEBALL???? He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, resided a big portion of his life in Berrien Spring, Michigan walking along the roads (saw him once) and now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. So what's the connection to MIAMI and/or BASEBALL?

That's the way I feel. Today will be a better gauge of what we have with this team. Away from all of our own hoopla, I think they will respond and win today.

GO MARLINS !

I agree with this. It was only one game, but from what I saw he could have used the full spring training to work on his left field.

There is ZERO connection between he and baseball.

He did train much of his career in the 5th Street Gym in the South Beach area of Miami Beach. His residence wasn't here but when he trained for many of his fights he would spend a couple of months before each one here.

As I have said in another thread, it was a very poor choice by Loria. But that doesn't surprise me in the least.

Here were my concerns:

1. This park played BIG. I hope it just seemed like that today.

2. Boni looked TERRIBLE swinging in the 2 spot (one game, but I've always been skeptical of his ability to be consistent with the bat)

3. LoMo looked hurt. I'm guessing he really wanted to play opening day and that's why he said he was fine, but I can't imagine running around this early in the season is going to help him heal. (i'd like to see coghlan get some at bats too)

otherwise, everything else looked good. Fish had some pretty well smoked hits that went straight to outfielders within the first 5 innings, so I think the no-hit through 5 was just badluck. Also, i'm sure the pressure of opening day in the new park was making all the players want to do too much. I'm glad they'll be away for a little bit, to get into a groove.

Up in section 325 the wind was really shooting out to left at times so i'm surprised that no one went yard

Hanley just wanted to crush that ball on every swing, discipline out the window (goes for Stanton too). I guess they wanted to impress too much.

I would almost disagree. Although we are not the rays, it seems over the past couple years we have had some pitchers go pretty deep on us. Some pitchers that shouldn't have no-no's late in games, other than kershaw a couple years ago. Probably wouldn't go as far as to call it a 'tendency' but we do have a tendency to put together some very pathetic games offensively.

I'm looking back, did JJ actually have surgery or was he just shut down? I'm having a surprisingly difficult time finding any news on what his treatment was.
