December 15, 201213 yr I still remember the glowing interviews of Volstad and Sinkbeil by Hutton and Waltz just after they were drafted, proudly wearing their Marlins jerseys, brimming with optimism about the future. They probably did Skipworth, too, but I guess he wasn't notable enough to recollect. Too bad not everything works out as projected or planned. Last sightings: Volstad -- Cubs waived him after going 3-12, 6.31 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, picked up by Royals, designated for assignment 11/20/12. MiLB or Japan or retirement, here we come. Sinkbeil -- Released by Marlins in ST in '11, became a FA after playing in AA (PIT) in '11. Pitched 2 innings of MLB in his "career" with horrible results, apparently already out of the game. And so it sometimes goes. Cox is a left handed hitting third baseman with offensive upside in a franchise brimming with opportunity that is absent of any other future competition. I'm sure we will at least get to see him try to win us over for more than 2 games...

December 22, 201213 yr Why does the first round matter so much? Jesus ... Stanton was a round 2, Cishek wasn't a first rounder, Johnson wasn't a first rounder. Come on ... And you say, "could do better with a fifth of scotch and a dartboard," well that's what the draft is. Darts at a dartboard, you throw and hope it goes where you want. Also, Yelich, Fernandez, and Heaney as the last 3 first round picks may swing things the other way.

It's amazing they hit so perfectly on Yelich (who many analysts didn't see as a first rounder, only other team in the first round even considering him was the Yankees) and Fernandez (again, a guy who many didn't have on their radar that early in the draft). If you're going to fault them for misses, praise them for hits. Plus, Stanton in the second round makes up for like four first round misses at least.

Overall the Marlins during the Loria error, oops I mean era they drafted 43 players thus far that have played in the Majors, 6 of these didn't sign with the Marlins but went on to play in The Show I would have to believe that would be about average for a major league team. Hindsight is great thing about player drafts.

Even if the top 2 players, Justin Upton and Alex Gordon, have yet to live up to lofty expectations...

Well Yelich or Fernandez does it if for whatever reason the Marlins felt 3B was a better investment, but I think (among other reasons) they'd love to keep those two around to show they've turned around their drafting performance. I imagine they offered Nolasco with some mix of their second tier guys like Nicolino/Marisnick/Ozuna.
