Opening Day roster taking shape

Expect a Loogy to be picked up as well, but who would be the odd man out...Qualls?

Qualls officially made the team, Maine and Ramos haven't yet.

In my head, I have this mental image of Maine and Ramos standing like ten feet away from the other 23 guys while Loria looks at the 23 and says "woohoo u made it! Now we have two pitching spots left, who should we choose???" And Maine and Ramos look around at each other and behind them and up and down and realize they're the only two guys left... Loria gives them a smirk and they kinda keep looking at him, at Redmond, at each other, and everywhere else... and this has been awkwardly happening for the last two days and will continue for the next two days. And they'll all continue to twiddle their thumbs waiting and waiting for someone, anyone, else to arrive. Loria goes "The next two pitchers to walk through THAT door are on this team!"... and the awkward situation continues... we'll see where it goes.

I think I have issues but this is what I keeping visualizing.

Congratulations, Bat Boy and Mike Hill on making the bullpen!

Not all that bad could be worse.

1. LF: Juan Pierre

2. 2B: Donovan Solano

3. RF: Giancarlo Stanton

4. 3B: Placido Polanco

5. C: Rob Brantly

6. CF: Justin Ruggiano

7. 1B: Casey Kotchman

8. SS: Adeiny Hechavarria

9. SP: Ricky Nolasco

11 runs in 4 innings. Book it.

Hechavarria will be batting second very soon i think.maybe?

Well general consensus is that his offense doesn't have that high of a ceiling. If he's hitting #2, it'll only be because Solano or Polanco are hitting absolutely miserably.

1. LF: Juan Pierre

2. 2B: Donovan Solano

3. RF: Giancarlo Stanton

4. 3B: Placido Polanco

5. C: Rob Brantly

6. CF: Justin Ruggiano

7. 1B: Casey Kotchman

8. SS: Adeiny Hechavarria

9. SP: Ricky Nolasco

11 runs in 4 innings. Book it.

Nolasco isn't that bad...on most days.

That's one of the worst opening day lineups I've seen of any team in recent memory. Even if all of these guys were in their peak it wouldn't be an average lineup.

I think that line-up has the potential to be as bad as the 2003 Tigers. We'll see when Yelich is called up.

Miami's rotation is probably quite a bit better, though, but it still has the potential to be pretty shitty.

Strongly doubt it. Solano really isn't a bad choice with JP leading off. He will take pitches to allow JP to see if a steal is possible. And if JP doesn't go, look for a hit and run. At the very least moving JP into scoring position with less than 2 outs. Solano isn't going to walk a lot, but he will most likely make contact, driving the ball between first and second. Put the ball in play and anything can happen.

This isn't a power line up. This is a small ball line up. That is a text book small ball play.

Well, actually, if those guys (excluding Hechavarria and whoever is pitching) just perform at their average, it would be a slightly above-average line-up.

Career numbers of the 7 MLB guys:

Pierre 297/346/393/709

Solano 295/342/375/717

Stanton 270/350/553/903

Polanco 299/344/403/747

Brantly 290/372/460/842

Ruggiano 277/330/464/794

Kotchman 262/328/388/715

When it comes to OPS, they're all above average. 3 of them only barely, but 4 of them significantly. And that's a bunch of better career batting averages than the average Marlin has sported, ever. This team has never hit better than 272 (2004.)

Yes, some are small sample-sizes and some of these guys are old and likely to decline, but, overall it ain't bad for the minimal money spent.

Unless everyone seriously under-performs, considering that they also have a decent pen and bench they should win more games than generally expected, questionable starting pitching notwithstanding.

Throw Yelich (and maybe others) into the mix in a few months and it might get interesting.

Yeah, I really don't expect this team to suck as much as everyone is saying.

WILD CARD

Just for fun, here are the best seasons of our starting 7:

Pierre 2004 326/374/407/781

Solano 2012 295/342/375/717

Stanton 2012 290/361/608/969

Polanco 2007 341/388/458/846

Brantly 2012 290/372/460/832

Ruggiano 2012 313/374/535/909

Kotchman 2011 306/378/422/800

Some upside, along with the possibility of massive failure. Any way you slice it, not a bunch of losers, even if we do have to single them to death. Hits is hits.

Maybe they won't suck as much as they did last year with RISP.

This lineup COULD be OK. Remember, playing small ball in our park could work. It's better than trying to field a lineup like the Braves, based around nothing but power.

This is literally the exact opposite of the '06 team.

That starting lineup, starting rotation, bullpen, coaches, team, waterboy, everything...it just makes me sad. Usually this doesn't happen until midway through June.

The sad part is realizing mid july that this team will probably finish with a better record than last years.

I expect Pierre to be decent but nothing special. Even in his prime, he didnt work counts or draw walks. His OBP is completely dependent on getting hits. Polanco has been very injury plagued as of late, if its the Polanco of a few years ago thats fine but if its not it will be ugly.

Donovan Solano will likely be one of if not the worst position players in the majors with the bat.

I doubt Ruggiano repeates his performance from last year or that he regresses back to where he was at before. Somewhere in the middle is likely where he will settle, which will be in 4th OF territory but he is kind of forced to start.

I like Brantly, I like his potential, but he is going to take his lumps.

Hechaverria will be slick with the glove but likely wont provide much with the bat, at least not this year. Talk is he might be able to develop his bat but it will be a long road.

I think the move to 1B will benefit Logan Morrison greatly. Allow him to relax and be easier on his legs. I have high hopes that bat is still there. Whoever fills in till he is back isnt going to be good however.

Stanton is the one true legitimate offensive player the Marlins have. Morrison can be, Brantly could be soon, and Hechaverria might be some day.

Do you own the team?

No, unfortunately.

:lol

If you owned the team, sir triple-dot, would you allow me to rent space in one of the offices in the stadium and live there?
