Marlins Acquire Mat Latos

Kolek is literally 18 years old. If he's the best we have in our system at the moment, and it's not even a close #2, there are serious, SERIOUS problems in our minor league system.

It'll take two or three years to rebuild the system back to something resembling respectability.

This sounds a lot like the panic after we pulled up Stanton/Morrison and co. a few years later, we were right back to the top of baseball. I have no doubt we will repeat that again.

Well that's partly due to the fact that we sold off half our guys :$

This.

The trades helped to facilitate that, but we've drafted guys like Heaney and Moran that eventually led to quality talent.

This is going to be a one year rental. If we needed $12.5 million just to afford free agents in the first place then we won't have the $100 million+ to re-sign Latos if he posts a low 3 or high 2 ERA after this season. It's a great trade if you are desperate to make the playoffs next year like the Marlins seem to be, and Disco seems destined for the bullpen and Chad Wallach is 2 and a half years from MLB consideration anyway. THESE are the kind of prospects you trade for established talent even for the short term.

I agree. I was just responding to different posts I've seen about how we have to extend him but also how we want to wait until we're sure he's good and healthy.

I think this is a great trade.

Added quirk.... Latos was in attendance at the inaugural Marlins game April 5, 1993. Very cool

That's actually pretty cool.

Hill never says anything of substance

Their was an earlier quote where Hill said something along the lines that people are going to be surprised about the moves that were coming

Anyone remember when ryan dempster was a rookie they showed a magic show by him?

I remember playing wiffle-ball at the Fan fest back when Dempster was a rookie. It was team Dempster/some other fan father and son vs team Burnett/me-my son. AJ handed me the ball to pitch on our team. I also remember Latos busing my table many times at Peking Tokyo in Coral Springs. And there's a Juan Pierre connection as well with Latos.http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2013-04-19/sports/sfl-marlins-latos-pierre-blog-20130419_1_mat-latos-hibachi-miami-marlins I like this trade.

Jesus can anyone stand to support a Marlins transaction?

Dan Jennings trading Dan Jennings is clearly bad karma! Terrible move!

With the Latos deal clearly they are counting on him being healthy. But even if not, it's not like we sold the farm for him, and it's only 1 season. Worth it if you think you have some kind of shot at the postseason.

"Steamer predicts the Marlins traded a better pitcher than Mat Latos, for Mat Latos."

okay that seems pretty optimistic for Desclafani.

Medically I have 99% confidence in Latos because I highly doubt that even the Miami Marlins would make a trade this important without completely checking the player's medical records.

Clearly this is hinging on whether he comes back healthy or not. But even if not, it's not like we sold the farm for him, and it's only 1 season. Worth it if you think you have some kind of shot at the postseason.

The fangraphs guys mostly like the trade for Latos and thought SD's haul was pretty light. It's just a counter opinion and I thought it was helpful because I was a bit baffled by Steamer's projection. Wonder what ZiPs will have him at.

I don't think it's that unfair of an analysis. His injury history certainly played a role in why we got him for what we got him.

History? Didnt he have like three straight 200ip seasons in a row before 2014? (Not looking, just guessing)
