November 18, 201510 yr Samson is really saying the asbolutely right things for once regarding this boras thing...i'm almost sort of just a tiny itsy bit starting to like him? The thing with marlins management is Jose probably should treat them like children since they run this team that IQ level no higher than some children
November 18, 201510 yr A guy can be a bit of a douche without being a clubhouse cancer too. You can be quiet and selfish and still be a team player. I wonder where the truth lies.

November 18, 201510 yr most likely that jose is being traded this off season for kike hernandez Worth it.
November 18, 201510 yr Wait...what "veterans" did we trade in July? Mat Latos? yep and dan haren. if that upset jose considering where the team was headed, he's an idiot. maybe he wasn't educated enough to understand that he's a fool.
November 18, 201510 yr So let me see if I understand where we're at here... Marlins and Scott Boras have a minor squabble over two issues (Ozuna's demotion and Jose Fernandez's 2016 pitch limits)... ESPN facetiously suggests Miami trade Jose as a solution to not have to deal with Boras... Craig Mish seemingly uses this to claim Jose is being shopped... Andy Slater uses this opening to let out that Jose isn't actually the best teammate... Marlins deny and/or refuse to comment on all of this... Conclusion: Jose Fernandez IS a less than stellar teammate BUT the Marlins still have no reason or desire to trade him at this point ALTHOUGH it isn't out of the question in the future. Yes? No? (Admin please like this so I feel better about myself)
November 18, 201510 yr Jose Fernandez is the guy you hope and pray one of your prospects turns into ... the Marlins literally already have that guy. Even if the Marlins acquire 3-4 decent prospects in return, it seems unlikely that those players will combine to be better than Fernandez. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/there-s-no-logical-reason-for-the-marlins-to-want-to-deal-jose-fernandez-185744782.html
November 18, 201510 yr That's why you extend players like him instead of doing what the Marlins did with Cabrera. I have to give the Marlins some credit here, at least. They appear to be trying. It seems like Jose and Boras are the problem.
November 18, 201510 yr Not just asking penguino but anyone... I wasn't as in-the-know on behind the scenes stuff back then but to the best of my knowledge the Marlins never once tried to extend Cabrera before trading him, right?
November 18, 201510 yr I prefer a team of solid players than one with two stars, a few solid players, and crap making up the rest of the roster. Trading Jose would be a gamble, but I would prefer 3-4 solid players (think Omar Infante when he was here) that will put up 3 WAR each. But right now we should at least keep the team together for another two years and see what we can do to fix it. If we can't right this ship by the end of 2017, we should start over.

I wasn't as in-the-know on behind the scenes stuff back then but to the best of my knowledge the Marlins never once tried to extend Cabrera before trading him, right? I thought it was his work ethic, attitude and weight most specifically that was the issue. I don't think Cabrera wanted to stay here long term either.

Your first sentence exemplifies with what the royals did this year. And I'm a billion % in agreement with you. You just made my hour.
November 18, 201510 yr I remember it being money. If I recall, they never actually tried to extend him early on in his arbs years though, correct?
November 18, 201510 yr Yeah. I think it was the philosophy of not giving a player an early extension and working through arbitration. That of course doesn't work with future hall of famers that hit free agency and write their own checks. how did beinfest still have a job after the cabrera trade and that one draft where they had 30 first rounders that were all busts
November 18, 201510 yr No idea, but I think it became super obvious the marlins weren't going to be able to extend cabrera so I can't fault him for that. That comes from Loria. No doubt, but regardless of what was thought at the time, when the return ends up being that bad, someone's head should roll (didnt he get promoted)?
November 18, 201510 yr Your first sentence exemplifies with what the royals did this year. And I'm a billion % in agreement with you. You just made my hour. I haven't looked at the WAR numbers for the Royals, but I'd bet that you're right. Everyone was just solid. Some were better than just solid, but for the most part it was just a group of good-not-great players.

Some were better than just solid, but for the most part it was just a group of good-not-great players. They're a well put together team with a FO that thinks about what they're trying to do with a clear strategy & plan aka the anti-marlins: http://www.hardballtimes.com/royals-royals/ "The club has no fewer than four full-time employees who work in analytics, and that doesn’t include any interns or consultants."

November 18, 201510 yr wasn't Stanton situation the same before he signed the extension? actually they might have been? Both had 2 arby years left i think?
November 18, 201510 yr About the Cabrera situation, do we know how much the lack of a new ballpark was a true factor in not extending him? It was said by them several times that it was the reason and I know they lie when they want to but it's not unreasonable to think that was part of it. I mean, since the new ballpark was confirmed the team extended Hanley, JJ, Nolasco, Stanton, Yelich, and tried with Fernandez Ozuna and Hech. It's very possible they didn't think they could pay Cabrera long-term before securing a ballpark. Plus with that report last week that team has shit revenues even with a new ballpark, imagine their revenue a decade ago.
November 18, 201510 yr Author IIRC Stanton doesnt sign that extension if not for DJ convincing him. No DJ now to convince/recruit Jose to stay.
