Marlins interested in Mark Reynolds and Chris Carter

Featured Replies

Heyman says Marlins still interested in Francoeur. I have to believe it'd be a minors deal with a spring invite and if that's the case I'm OK with that. Can't be guaranteeing him a spot. Same with Chris Johnson if they go that route.

I agree

Via Korea mass-media, I saw a news Dae-Ho Lee just signed the Lotte Giants (one of KBO league team).

  • The Marlins and Braves are both talking to Jeff Francoeur about a potential reunion, Heyman tweets. “Frenchy” split the 2016 season between Atlanta and Miami, batting a combined .254/.297/.378 with seven home runs. It’s been five years since Francoeur turned in an OBP north of .300, but he’s consistently valued by big league teams for his leadership and clubhouse presence. If the Marlins believe him to be capable of playing some first base, he could pair with Justin Bour as a platoon partner. While that’s just speculation on my behalf, Francoeur is a career .279/.328/.449 hitter against lefties and batted .271/.313/.414 in 133 PAs against southpaws last season.

Please God no Jeff Francoeur or Chris Johnson this year.  Please, God.

Surprised no mlb team signed him,but I guess that korea team offered him the most money.

Francouer and JT never played 1b in their career,I think even as good as Hill,it's mission impossible for him to make them ok 1b in one spring training, right ?

Never doubt Mike Hill. He's awesome.

Pretty sure Realmuto can play a little 2B/SS too. Super utility starting catcher?

I also wouldn't mind seeing him on the mound to close out 1-run games.

"The fact that the Marlins' roster is now at 40 is an indication the club isn't looking to add another established player to a guaranteed contract."

What a joke !? they could easily DFA'd any useless piece from that fulled 40 man roster.

Reynolds is not an upgrade at all against lefties and you might as well run Bour out there.  I still don't see Carter accepting a platoon role - and with their limited budget the money should be saved for next offseason anyway as Carter would not be the missing piece that puts us into the playoffs.  You don't just sign people for the sake of signing people.  They were smart/lucky in that they didn't blow that much coin on chapman/jensen too.  They need to start investing some of this money internationally and restocking the farm though.

You all take too much stock in the exact words of these fluff piece early year articles. The roster is at 40 men with basically 23 or so spots locked in. That doesn't mean they won't consider adding options to be a righty bench bat. The offseason still hasn't ended. The chances of them giving out a guaranteed contract to anyone is of course lower but they still have time to add depth options for that last role on the bench.

Some of you people absolutely need to breathe more frequently.

I'm not a fan of restocking the farm and waiting for another 5~10 years.

That's what you do when there are no UFA'S of any value in any given season.

• According to a team source, the Marlins have been contacted by reps for free agent first baseman Chris Carter (41 homers but .222 for the Brewers) and Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53 for Colorado).

But they don’t want to spend much on a right-handed-hitting first baseman to back up starter Justin Bour because they are considering a 13-man bullpen and a four-man bench (Derek Dietrich, Ichiro Suzuki, AJ Ellis and Miguel Rojas).

Nevertheless, the Marlins haven’t ruled out bringing back Chris Johnson or Jeff Francouer. Each can play first base.

This is for @taiwanmarlin from Barry Jackson, Miami Herald.

  • The Marlins’ acquisition of right-hander Severino Gonzalez filled the team’s 40-man roster, making further guaranteed contracts unrealistic, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports. The Marlins could still add some players on minor league deals, but with a full 40-man roster and a payroll that is at its limit (roughly $110MM), additional spending is a long shot. Miami was recently connected to both Chris Carter and Mark Reynolds, but Frisaro calls the chances of signing either “extremely remote.” The Fish do have interest in Jeff Francoeur, but he’d have to be willing to sign a minor league contract in order to return to Miami. That could ultimately happen, but Francoeur does have interest elsewhere, as the Braves are said to be in on him as well.

  • Sticking with the Marlins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald hears that it was the agents for Carter and Reynolds who reached out to the Marlins recently, and not vice versa. That would certainly make sense, as Miami could look like an appealing landing spot, on paper, for either slugger. Jackson writes that the Marlins are considering a 13-man pitching staff and a four-man bench, making the addition of even a modestly priced right-handed bat like Carter or Reynolds unlikely. There’s still some interest in Francoeur and Chris Johnson, he notes.

I believe I'm not the only one here that hope this team got better…

You can add me to that group. We all want the team to succeed. I was just pointing out that the agents of the Carter and Reynolds actually reached out the Marlins, not vice versa.

Marlins will more than likely pass on both and try to sign Francouer to the minor league deal.

Random prediction on Reynolds and Carter, if they are unsigned by March 1st, I could see the Marlins making a push for one them.
