That link basically supports what Das and I have been saying about Jose and Boras.

Its a false narrative that Boras is this emperor that says, I'm going to maximize profits for my clients their desires be fucking damned!
April 24, 20179 yr You can't spell Boras without sobra... Which is kinda like that hummus brand. Anyone got pita? I'm starvin
April 24, 20179 yr From a league sense, it's acknowledging a potential to be one of the greatest cut short. From a Marlins perspective, no real reason for a statue. I feel like it's the other way around. From a league sense it's pointless, he's just one other good player and he happened to die tragically. From the Marlins perspective he's one of the greatest they ever had even if the time was brief and he should always be remembered. Marlins fans born 50 years from now should learn about Jose Fernandez the way future Pirates fans should learn about Clemente and future Yankee fans should learn about Jeter etc etc. And I know Jose didn't accomplish what those guys did but he's still important to THIS franchise. Maybe the answer isn't to do it with a statue but he definitely should be honored and remembered by this franchise.

Pick your order for statues for these two really, tbh.

Not really about the Marlins, here. The Marlins have had amazing players. It's the fact that Jose could've been a generational player -- both in skill and in passion for the game. The potential, with a career cut short, is the tragedy to the game. The idea that "who knows" what he could've been. The Marlins making a statue simply because he was a great player for like 1.5 seasons is silly. I would imagine it to be more along the lines of a memorial than anything else.
April 24, 20179 yr For what it's worth, I feel like Dontrelle's impact on Miami in his time here was greater than Jose's. Jose was a much better pitcher, but, in terms of what they meant to the city, Dontrelle's time here meant just as much, if not more, and it was more exciting overall because the team ended up being good (and won the World Series). I don't see why one would get a statue and not the other. In terms of passion, playing the game hard, and exciting fans, Dontrelle was that same kind of guy too. The major difference between the two in terms of what they meant to the city was that one of them, again, was a part of a championship team, and that one wasn't Jose. The statue is just a silly idea imo.
April 24, 20179 yr The major difference between the two in terms of what they meant to the city was that one of them, again, was a part of a championship team, and that one wasn't Jose. I can accept this. Another major difference in terms of what they meant to the city is that Jose is a Cuban immigrant, playing for a city full of Cuban immigrants. That cannot be overlooked regarding the politics of this and what they meant to the city.
April 24, 20179 yr Author On a side note. Anyone remember that statue Pudge had built of himself when he had his house down here. I think I remember hearing something that when he got divorced he was forced to sell it and split the proceeds.
April 24, 20179 yr Well yeah of course if we're hypothetically gonna start making Marlins statues there are others who deserve it as well. Maybe it's about timing as well. The big difference between Jose and dontrelle at the moment is that Jose is dead and dontrelle isn't so this goes back to penguinos point of how Loria and co. do things in the here and now so much. Like if Loria is thinking "of course Dontrelle deserves a statue but Jose has to be first because he's dead".
April 24, 20179 yr Also above Beinfest brought up the word memorial and penguino earlier brought up the word enshrinement... what the Marlins need is something that's a clear memorial, such as a mural or plaque, and not something that is more of an enshrinement. And a statue probably isn't the best answer as it's more of an enshrinement than a memorial.
April 24, 20179 yr Indifferent about the statue however would still like to see his number be officially retired.

April 24, 20179 yr The statue thing is a PR thing built by up Loria and the buck stops there. Not like they are going to stop building the statue now. I actually think the moment of silence of the ASG and also the September 25th day are great ideas. Building a small mural somewhere in the ballpark is also a good idea. What they currently have is suitable and enough if you ask me. Fernandez never wanted to stay long term and the money would have been completely asinine for him to sign before Free Agency. We would then have Stanton's contract and his, crippling our franchise for years to come. Ask the Angels how that is working out for them right now. The whole talk about Boras not letting his players sign before free agency is also baloney. He went on the record to say there have been exceptions and when they player wants it, he does what they ask. One that always comes to mind is Carlos Gonzalez who signed a pretty good deal way before hitting free agency. He is now a free agent after this year.

The statue is just a silly idea imo. You can't compare what Dontrelle and Jose meant to this City. Maybe Dontrelle made more of an impact for the fan base and the organization but not the "city". Jose brought with him the story that many as being Cuban could related to. The old and tired would show up every 5th day, perhaps even fans that gave up on this organization years ago, he rejuvenated their desire to be at the park again. Jose's grip around this city was far, far greater than that of Dontrelle. As for the statue, I don't think much of it and quite honestly, its probably too soon to be doing it.

April 24, 20179 yr The old and tired would show up every 5th day, perhaps even fans that gave up on this organization years ago, he rejuvenated their desire to be at the park again. For what it's worth, awhile back I looked at the attendance numbers for normal games vs. "Jose days" and found no difference. I think it's a misconception that the local community made an effort to show up at the park to see Jose pitch because the attendance numbers did not reflect that one bit.
April 24, 20179 yr Then let the city of Miami erect a statue. I was thinking this. Maybe let a Cuban community center do something if they want.
April 24, 20179 yr I really don't feel comfortable putting up a statue to a guy who got himself and two others killed because he decided to be incredibly reckless one day. I do think a lot of this is because Loria was very close with Jose and I get the impression that losing him was like losing a son. But considering the circumstances of his death a statue is not at all appropriate.

I think it's a misconception that the local community made an effort to show up at the park to see Jose pitch because the attendance numbers did not reflect that one bit. Also, Dontrelle had just as much hype for his starts. I actually think his starts drew greater crowds, in part because the team was better. Dontrelle fell apart, but he was incredibly exciting when he started. His promotion to the big leagues made baseball in Miami exciting again. Casual fans would go to games just to watch the D-Train, just like many enjoyed watching Jose. I'm just bringing this analogy up to sort of prove the point that the statue is overkill.
