He's a top def catcher in fact I do believe Realmuto played shortstop in high school, so the ability is there - however, as Polly said, top defensive catcher, and to SOJ's point, more value behind the plate. So, really no need to explore as of now unless he begins to show deteriorating skills behind the plate. Occasional appearances at first are fine.

Buster Posey is 31, and he has had a significantly worse season, mind you it's unclear if this is an outlier season for him, or if this is the trend but it is still concerning. I think if we don't address it now, he won't be the best hitter on the team when he is 31. I'm not saying shift him completely. But I think it'd be worth a lot if we could move him to a plus position as well as have him play catcher. Catcher/Third base would be a super valuable thing, and it would give us more versatility, and potentially extend his bat and value through a deeper contract.

Just stick anyone back there because if he's any good, someone will want him to switch positions after a few years.

I would almost rather use catcher as a journeyman position. Have guys who hit okay, but are good defensive catcher back there just because the potential for injury is so high. I think what I'm really getting at is do we really want to build around a catcher?

Posey also got nailed by Scott Cousins in a completely legal and totally justifiable play where Posey didn't set himself up properly to take a hit.

No shit Heyman! And who isn't optimistic about an extension? Other teams and agents and scouts and other executives and media etc etc? The only ones who decide if an extension happens are the Marlins front office and Realmuto himself. Asking the opinion of another teams executives is absolutely irrelevant in this situation.
September 6, 20187 yr I feel if you could land 2 top 50 prospects then you consider it, paying him isn't what we want in all honesty. Keeping the payroll low till we are actually near contending should be the plan. If we got offered the Robles Kieboom (younger brother) package I feel we should've taken it, hell I would've thrown in Kyle (when he was on fire) for another prospect to even it out.
