I think both of these are fair points which is kind of the root of this question. I didn't realize he's 33 already so yeah that's kinda getting up there for someone who's already injury prone and has yet to put together a full good season with the bat. When he's locked in, yeah, he's one of our better hitters (although that speaks more to the lack of hitters we've had since Sherman bought the team more than anything). At this point I'm not really clamoring to replace him with someone unproven either especially considering our horrid track record with hitters. That said, Bruce won't likely spend big money on a proven hitter either. I hope Cooper absolutely mashes until the trade deadline and they can get someone with real potential as a hitter ( and some goddamn speed please). I do see them making an offer in the offseason though and keeping him around if he does what he's been doing for the past few seasons. I don't think they'll do more than 2 years though. Cooper being or not being extended is the least of our concerns at this point. I honestly don't care either way with him.

But at the same time, i wouldn’t be too excited about offering him a multi year deal when our owner pinches every penny.

All I've seen is people, generally, would not want to extend him for reasons of age and injuries. We haven't said he can't hit, although in his only nearly-full season (last year), he didn't do all that much. We like Coop, but in terms of what he provides for the team, probably not worth what he might cost next year, unless he returns on a cheap deal like @EricOwens! suggested. Nothing wrong with that.

April 12, 20233 yr I'd extend coop depending on how he does this year and what the asking price is for him. If he's affordable, then go, if not then obviously look elsewhere. Marlins have no bats close to his consistency anywhere in the minors and I'm not a fan of experimenting with another Garcia / Soler type of hitter in free agency. Marlins seem to do well when they trade for pitchers, so if they can flip him for a decent rotation guy, then that might be the best outcome given his age and consistent ability to get injured.
