When I was working at a math tutoring center a few years ago, we had someone come in and apply for a spot - the application is just a test of stuff from the basic basic maths up to Algebra 2 and Geometry. Takes people about two hours usually.

 

Well, anyways, this person came in and was told that and said "yeah, alright," and then was told, "and for the test we don't use calculators," and she just had the most dejected "ohhhhh ..." after hearing that.

 

She took three hours (the entire time we were open that day) and she was getting stuff wrong on the first page which was super basic stuff.

So she was applying for a job as a math tutor but couldn’t work math problems with pencil and paper?

Maybe she thought is was going to be a super easy job because she was going to show people how to use a calculator to add and subtract.

 

Reminds me of something I read about. It was referencing an article from the Washington Post from 2006 about a global study that was done to see if students self confidence in math correlated to actual skill and knowledge.

Turns out that students from US had very high self esteem and confidence in their math abilities however they scored much lower on a standard math test compared to students from Korea and Japan who reported very low levels of self esteem and confidence when it comes to their math abilities but scored much higher on the math test compared to the US students.

 

The point it was trying to make in the book  I read that from is that if you’re trying to get better at math (or any other skill) spend time actually working on getting better at math (or the other skill) instead of working on your self esteem and confidence regarding how well you can do something. 
 

I wish someone could pass that along to Avi. Yeah it’s great that you can get paid $12 million a year whether you do good or not, or whether you play half the year or not. So I’m sure he feels very confident in himself because he may have worked hard in the past to reach the point in his career where he could demand a contract like that. However the team is paying him because they were expecting him to maintain his Brewers type numbers as a Marlins.. not because he has a couple of decent seasons and now he just deserves it. 
 

Got to get back out there and hit those batting cages even longer and harder than before Avi. We don’t expect you to be an MVP player just be barely slightly above average and I’m pretty sure everyone will be happy. 😂
