And I agree with Bryan, the top three - although I'd add Joe Nathan and probably Bobby Jenks in there as well - are ahead of the rest in the AL. As the Marlins feared, the right-hander needs Tommy John surgery. Dr. James Andrews, who examined Martinez on Wednesday, will perform the operation today in Birmingham, Ala. Martinez won't begin a throwing program until November and likely won't be back until several weeks into the 2007 season. It's a disappointing outcome to what began as a promising rookie season for Martinez. Utilizing a mid-90s fastball and good slider, Martinez made the team out of spring training and became one of the Marlins' setup men. Before this season he had totaled three innings above high-Class A. Martinez was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA, five walks and nine strikeouts in six games (62/3 innings) before an elbow strain landed him on the disabled list.
