March 23, 200818 yr KISSIMMEE, Florida -- Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers reached a preliminary agreement Saturday on an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension, a source close to Cabrera told ESPNdeportes.com on condition of anonymity. The All-Star third baseman will undergo a physical on Monday to complete the deal, the source said. The contract is the richest in the Tigers' history. Magglio Ordonez had the previous record when he signed with Detroit for $75 million and five years in 2004. "Miguel just signed a big contract," said the source. "The contract will be completed when Miguel takes a physical on Monday." Cabrera, 24, was eligible for arbitration in 2009 and could become a free agent after the season ended. He will earn $11.3 million in 2008, and then an average of $19 million per year through 2016. March 23, 200818 yr He deserves it. Hopefully he will continue to produce at or above his current level and find himself inducted one day in the Hall of Fame as a Tiger, even though it pains me to say this. They were willing to shell out the bucks and who knows, this might seem like a bargain in the future.
March 23, 200818 yr Congrats Miggy. :arms Wish you could have signed that deal w/ us. Sorry to see you go.
March 23, 200818 yr I've had a wild fantasy since December about him not re-signing with them and getting a huge payday here once his contract was over.
March 23, 200818 yr ......and THAT'S why we couldn't hang onto him. Few franchises could afford that, let alone one that draws fleas for attendance numbers and has a terrible stadium lease deal. But if anyone deserves it, it's him. He's a great hitter already, and still has many years to go.

March 23, 200818 yr He could have gotten more imo. I agree, he could have gotten more if he waited until he reached the free agent market but I guess he and his agent just wanted to play it safe in case he got hurt and his value went down.
March 23, 200818 yr he should have pushed for 10 years and 200 million. that's a great deal for the tigers. he'd only be 34 at the end of the contract.
March 23, 200818 yr Good for Cabs, he deserves it.. Now he'll dog it for the rest of his career If I was the Tigers, I would put some dietary clause in the contract.
March 23, 200818 yr I'm just glad he's now on a mid-market team like the Tigers and not the Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox. I'm happy for him. Very well deserved (not that anyone actually deserves that much money for playing a game)

Huge payday for Cabs I am so happy for him, all he needs to do is keep away from those Big Macs, The clause is that he is not allowed to go to McDonalds while he is a Detroit Tiger

We saw him yesterday at Tiger Town. Physically, he looks good. But he still looks and acts lazy in the field. Could be it was because it is just a ST game, but... He also went 0-4 with 2 Ks and hit into 2 DPs. But if you are a team that can afford that kind of $$$ for a bat and not care that much about fielding, he's the guy.
March 24, 200818 yr A good deal for Detroit if he stays healthy. Agreed. They're getting him at a nice rate. He could have gotten $200 million in the open market.
