Marlins make first round of cuts

Featured Replies

"The Marlins announced their first batch of roster moves today, including the release of outfielder Jay Gibbons.

In addition, right-handers Mike Wood and Jose Ceda, catchers Miguel Fermin and Kyle Skipworth, third baseman Matt Dominguez and outfielder Michael Stanton were reassigned to minor league camp. Outfielder Jai Miller was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans."

Too bad for Gibbons but I guess he didn't show enough to be that extra man we need.

Certainly didnt think we would release Gibbons this early as .313 with a homer and 7 rbi aint bad after a couple of weeks of ST

He must have looked really bad beyond the numbers. I thought he was going to be a legitimate threat to make the team after hitting AAA a bit last year, and coming in motivated post roids.

So with gibbons relased i guess like some of you have said Dallas looks to have pretty good shot to make the team. But what about Gaby whos been struggling, I think this also makes it a little eaiser for him to make the team. I could be completely wrong.

My guess is they wanted to give Gibbons a chance to catch on with another team, and that they're happy with some of our youngsters, excluding Jai Miller.

That's right. It's a courtesy to him as a veteran to let him go early so he has a chance to sign with another club. No reflection on him. We just have some young talented outfielders and some other younger lefty-off-the-bench options like McD and DeAza.

wow honestly im surprised by that he was having a good spring and from watching him on tv last night he looked like a really solid left handed bat. I think this was a stupid move by the marlins.

"I thought that he's got some years left. He showed the bat is still there a little bit. ... I think if somebody gives him an opportunity in the right situation, I think he can help." - Fredi

So then why the hell would you release him??? Fredi didnt want himon the team from the start. So much for giving guys a chance to revive their careers.

You do know that this makes very little sense...right?

When you're competing with the likes of Alejandro De Aza and Brett Carroll, he should have known that his days were numbered.

I'm thinking that with Amezaga's injury, maybe the organization realized that their 25 man was gonna shape up different than expected (ie Andino and/or Bonifacio in the majors) and that plan didn't include Gibbons so they gave him a shot elsewhere. Also, with Amezaga going down it became imperative to have someone who can play good CF in a pinch.

I'm not sure that with the way Gaby is struggling, anything is going to make it easier (at least for me) for him to make the team. I just don't think he should start from day one with the way he is struggling, considering that we could very easily start McPherson at a corner and have Helms as the backup corner infielder.

According to Fredi, it was to give him the opportunity to go to place where he would actually get playing time.

So, I'm going to assume that if he doesn't find another place, he'd be in NOLA.

I'm kinda more eh about Fermin. Considering his age, I was hoping he'd get more time up here than he did. Any reports to where he's been reassigned to?

I'm kind of upset Gibbons is gone. Not only because he was performing well, but also because if Ross or Hermida were to go down, he's really the only one I would have been completely comfortable with in the everyday lineup.

Well think about where the other catchers are going. It's kind of surprising, but we're sort of starting to (slowly) develop catcher depth. This is how I see the levels.

AAA - Hayes/Rabelo or some veteran they pick up if they don't sign Pudge and Rabelo is on the team

AA - Davis/Some career minor leaguer off the street. Very underwhelming, but as long as they can catch the ball and groom G. Taylor, Winters, Allison, and more importantly West and Thompson/Sinkbiel, I don't mind it.

A+ - Fermin/Hatcher. Push Fermin over A because of Skip, his age, and for how hard he hit last year. Hatcher needs a repeat.

A - Skipworth/Langley. Kind of sucks for Langley, but I mean he does need to hit over a .600 OPS to get a promotion. Maybe he's a late bloomer.

A- - Ceballos. Probably could start at GBO, but the Marlins have to push Skipworth here. He's still 19, so he could get to AA by 22 years old which isn't stunting him longterm

I'm pretty sure it'll be Jupiter, with a quick promotion to Jax (200-250 PA) if he hits the ball hard. Hopefully Langley does the same thing so he can get some more PA.

Low cost in backup for the Outfield I believe ADA may get his usual 25 man assignment...Se how long it last this time?

Yeah just keep him away from Raynor so they don't trip over each other again.

You'd be comfortable with a guy who hasn't been in the majors since 2007, and in that season had a whopping .618 OPS that season?

After watching ADA play ST games two years ago I have been pulling for this guy. But I also like the way Carroll plays the game. Both have been very unlucky with the injury bug but I think a healthy ADA brings a better bat/OBP to the team. Just not sure how that would hold up being a bench player. Seems to be more of a guy that needs to start regularly to be productive.

With the Amazing out for a bit, it sounds like the team, and Fredi in general, is looking for a guy that can play IF and OF. Emilio isn't exactly tearing it up but he does look alot more comfortable from the left side of the plate. And Andino has never been able to hit with any consistency at this level.

Well, based on the fact that he's had plenty of prior success, and since that 2007 season has been successful every single place he's played (including here), yea I'd be comfortable with him playing everyday (at least a lot more comfortable handing him the ab's instead of anyone else at the moment).

Cutting Gibbons, who definitely had something to prove this year and looked to be off to a good start to get Andino and Bonifacio more play in the outfield? Seriously?
