It may be time to look into getting another Starting Pitcher

Depending on the severity of Ani's injury (as in, let's go see Dr. Andrews), we need to sign a vet pitcher. Someone whose development we would not be rushing, is reliable (if not spectacular), and have fit into the 4 or 5th spot.

There is no free agent pitcher that's really any better than what we have. All are good for 5+ ERAs.

Pedro Martinez is only going to go 5 IP max. That's the last thing we need.

Odalis Perez is only good for about 5 IP too but is atleast a lefty.

Byrd can at least go 6 IP plus and is likely our best option. And I have enough faith in Burke to go 6 IP with a 5 ERA.

Actually, I'd be fine with Burke getting a shot. A lot of people being mentioned for a callup, to me, don't seem quite ready. With Burke, he's been with the big league club in a starting role before, has some experience, and Wiley and Company have seen what he is and isn't able to do.

I don't want to through a rookie to the wolves, basically.

Can't say I know too much about him but a 27 year old formerly with the Braves - Chuck James?

11-4, 3.78 ERA in 25 games, 18 starts in 2006

11-10, 4.24 ERA in 30 starts in 2007

Sucked in 7 starts in 2008

Anyone who knows more about him think he could be serviceable as a #5 SP for a while?

he is an extreme FB pitcher (Career rate over 50%), which is bad even in a park like ours. He gives up nearly 2 HRs per 9 inning and a XBH over 40% of the time, and he doesn't have the K/BB to pull it off like other FB pitchers do. His peripherals say he was pitching over his head in '06 and '07 and that he's more of a 5+ ERA pitcher.

OK. I was just throwing out a name from the free agent list that hadnt been mentioned yet as he seemed to have a couple of decent enough seasons.

You know who would be real useful around now...Scott Olsen

Why not Burke Badenhop?????????

this, I wanted Badenhop ahead of Miller before the season, I stick by that comment.

I remember a while back a thread about us having one of the best rotations in the majors.....that was a joke, reality is we have one of the best 2 man rotations in baseball, THAT'S IT. Nolasco had 1 average year and 1 lucky year, Sanchez has been terrible since the surgery, and the verdict is still out on Miller but I'm leaning towards bust. Lets hope West and co. in the minors can help out soon or it will be a long season. The bullpen can only hold out for so long before wearing out and getting injured because the starters can't consistently go into the 6th or 7th innings. Best case scenario right now is if the offence comes out of it's slump and can give them 6 or 7 runs to work with, I know we can score more runs than this, and can vastly improve the .241 team ba.

Your serious? A lucky year? Nolasco dominated last year, nothign lucky about that. He will come back to form, and when he does we will have a very good 1-3 starting rotation. That alone would give us one of the best rotations in baseball.

As for the 4th and 5th spots, that's up in the air. Andrew Miller( WHO IS NOT A BUST!) would probably claim the 4th spot, while someone from the minors would claim Sanchez's spot.

And it's WAY to early to call up Sean West.

Andrew Miller isn't a bust. I'm calling him damaged goods. Tigers aren't the best team when it comes to handling young pitchers correctly.

If the Marlins stay on staff, long relievers Badenhop or Hayden Penn are candidates to fill Sanchez's spot. Another possibility is lefty Dan Meyer.

Nothing newsworthy there. Half this board could've told anyone that.

We're in loads of trouble if our 4th and 5th starters are any pair of Penn, Badenhop, Miller (if recovered), Meyer, and Taylor.

Of course, if our offense doesn't pick it up soon, all the pitching in the world can't save us.

I'm really starting to think that our 11-1 start was not at all indicative of where this team is going this season. I just hope to God this won't be a whole season of the current 4-13 team, which would give the Nationals a run for the NL East basement.

Miller hasn't even turned 24 yet.

Ok, but right now, he's a scrub. He hasn't proved that he belongs. When he does, if he does, will be great. But as of right now, he hasn't taken advantage of his opportunities. Although he has shown flashes, he is very inconsistent. I'm not saying that he will never amount to anything. But he needs to find himself in the minors.

he's had what? 2 starts? and he's actually competed in both of them. i see a guy who's starting to figure it out.

i mean, if we are going to talk about struggling, we might as well send ricky down.
