July 27, 200916 yr Could the Tigers' solution to its offensive woes in a pennant come from a hitter who, once upon a time, provided a brief boost to the Tigers at their lowest point? If that hitter is Cody Ross, it's possible, though not necessarily likely. Yahoo Sports' Gordon Edes reports that the Tigers have shown interest in Ross, currently manning center field for the Florida Marlins after finally getting a chance to be an everyday player last year. Now 28, he's an experienced, right-handed bat with power and run production for a Florida club that has had an outfield in flux, including an up-and-down season for former Tigers top prospect Cameron Maybin. If the Marlins reverse course and decide to be sellers at Friday's trade deadline, Ross is one player they could shop. The Tigers have always had high regard personally for Ross, who broke into the Majors with the 2003 Tigers after coming up through Detroit's farm system as a draft pick. He hit his first big league home run, a grand slam, in the same game in which he blew out his knee running out a sacrifice bunt. While Jair Jurrjens has become well-known as the Tigers prospect who got away in a bad deal, trading Ross to the Dodgers for lefty reliever Steve Colyer in Spring Training 2004 was a move the Tigers came to regret, though it took Ross two more organizations before he emerged. While the Tigers might think a lot of Ross, so do several other teams that have faced him, making Ross a popular trading chip if the Marlins decided to move him. But if anything, the Marlins are looking to upgrade right now, since they're within striking distance of the NL East lead and NL Wild Card. http://trades.mlblogs.com/
July 27, 200916 yr Ross for Miggy straight up. We pay Ross's salary and Detroit pays miggy. We both get our players back. Ross has really grown on me and I would be sad to see him go but if we got something that could really help us then do it. What does detroit have in their farm system?
July 27, 200916 yr There's a number of unrealistic players the Marlins (or more specifically, us fans) might want in return for Ross were he to wind up in Detroit, but realistically what could the Tigers offer that would make the Marlins a better team in 2009? Personally, as long as we're in contention I don't see how we're good trading partners.
July 27, 200916 yr Cody is worth basically 1 more win than McLouth but they'll probably get about the same return....3 guys on the C+/B- minus line. Or we could gungbuster for one B and one C+, I'd liek this more since we don' tneed depth.
July 27, 200916 yr If there is a trade with Tigers, they would probably pay us to take D-Train off their hands. Not that the Marlins would want him.

Considering Cody is either #2 or #3 in value of our position players (Depending on how you view Baker) I don't see really any trade of him making us better this year.

July 27, 200916 yr I wouldn't like the Marlins trading Ross back to Detroit at all. Although I do like their starting rotation...
July 27, 200916 yr Ross has really grown on me and I would b sad to see him go but if got something that could really help us then do it. What does detroit have in their farm system? Just a quick go-through. Porcello was basically the only guy of high value and we wouldn't get him. Really all they have is BP arms and we're fine there Ryan Perry/Brett Jacobson/Cody Satterwhite/Scott Green/Casey Fien/Robbie Weinhardt - good bullpen arms, but just that, a bullpen arm Luis Marte - SP, looks interesting Alex Avila - Good C spec, lots of walks and has power, but questionable contact and with him being almost ML ready and the Tigers having nothing at the C position he's probably untouchable Casey Crosby - LH SP with good stuff but bad control Wilkin Ramirez - Used to play 3b, walks and has power, but K's a ton. His k's make me really doubt his ML ability Scott Sizemore - 2b/ss that's basically Coghlan. Jeff Larish - High (30 plus) power, lots of walks, horrible contact. Probably duplicates ugglas lines. But after being a 1b in the minors he's played more games at 3b for the Tigers. If he's been 1b though I doubt his defense is good enough to stay at 3b, we have enough 1b's to worry about Casper Wells - Same as Larish but less power and OFer Ryan Strieby - Larish again, 1b. Chris Lampert/Alfredo Figaro - back of the rotation starter but ML ready Andy Dirks - Slap hitting OF with good BB/K and decent steals and plus defense. Could be useful
July 27, 200916 yr I wouldn't like the Marlins trading Ross back to Detroit at all. Although I do like their starting rotation... yeah but they could really use a lefty in there to go along with verlander, galarraga, porcello, and jackson. alot of fans will be pissed off if cody gets traded
July 27, 200916 yr Cody has become a bit of a fan favorite here. If we do trade him, I doubt it will be to Detroit. Maybe a Cody/Uggla or Cody/Hermida package to a team for a top bat or starter?

July 27, 200916 yr Can't imagine cody's got more value in a trade than to us right now. Exactly how I feel. I mean just a month ago we were discussing a straight up Cody Ross for Jeff Francouer LOL. I don't imagine we are going to get enough to make up for the loss of Cody.

Personally, as long as we're in contention I don't see how we're good trading partners. The article says it's unlikely, and it would only happen if the Marlins "reverse course and become sellers by Friday." (which is still possible, pending the outcome of the Braves series)
July 27, 200916 yr Author yeah the only way i see us trading ross or other starters is if we fall out of contention in the next 4 days
July 27, 200916 yr The article is just pure speculation. There's no indication that such talks have taken place or are taking place. Having said it, I wouldn't dismiss such a trade outright. While Cody has been a better hitter than I ever expected him to be, he has the same holes and flaws as Uggla. I think Cody just endears himself to fans so much because he gives the appearance of "playing 110 percent". Fans love that sort of thing, even if its largely irrelevant to success.
July 27, 200916 yr If we were sellers, then I could see this happening, but we're not. Not yet, but by Thursday night we might be. Thing is that hurts, is the Braves already upgraded and we haven't so the playing field is not level for us, and to have to play this series not making any moves, may bite us in the behind.
