Pujols and Marlins?

To write that on a blog where most people are probably casual fans is an insult to journalism, imo.

How the hell would Albert Pujols be worth that much?

The Sun-Sentinel should consider hiring someone that actually knows the sport to cover the team, if this guy truly thinks the Marlins would ever consider such a deal. There is not one player, who's value is that high.

I'd do this in a heartbeat:

How about: Ramirez, Gaby Sanchez, Ricky Nolasco, Matt Dominguez, and Chad James? Too much, even if it means hanging on to Morrison and Stanton?

The only one that would be really missed here is the most obvious one: Ramirez. I'd absolutely trade Hanley and the other four to get Pujols.

whats wrong with that? he is completely right about everything he said.

I would no way in hell trade Hanley Ramirez who is very very cheap for a young shortstop who is probably one of the top 5 position players in the league and then 2 or 3 other really good players for one megastar, even if it's Albert Pujols.

I super wouldn't, Pujols is an FA after next year.

Thats absurd... Hanley is the type of player you try and keep if you can somehow get Pujols, so that you can team them up and have some powerful combo in your lineup.

To me that'd be like if the Yankees had traded Jeter to get A-Rod... Hanley is not a trade piece for Pujols... I dont care how many homeruns Pujols hits... Hanley is wayy to high of a price for Pujols.

I think the thought process is that under a trade scenario these guys would be locked up long term.

Obviously all this is hypothetical, but I would do that trade proposed in a heartbeat. A player like Pujols (will probably go down as one of the top 5 players of all time) is hard to find. I'd give up Han Ram in a millisecond to get Pujols, and those players like Gaby and other prospects are nice, but they are nowhere in comparison to Pujols. Think of this...

3B Coghlan

LF Morrison

1B Pujols

RF Stanton

2B Uggla

CF Maybin

SS Bonifacio/Murphy

C Baker/Paulino

and we can still have our starting pitchers consist of Johnson, Sanchez, Volstad, Sanabia, and West. It leaves little room for a security blanket at many positions, but when you account for the fact that you have probably around 120 home runs from your 3-5 hitters, two really good hitters in Coghlan and Morrison, and who gives a crap what the bottom of the lineup is? That would be one of if not the most explosive offense in baseball.

Don't scream and say "oh but this would never happen", we all know that, this is all just speculating in a fantasy land the possibilities of what would happen in the event of a Pujols trade.

Also, not really accounting for finances here, just thinking of how the team would look follow if this trade hypothetically happened.

As good as that looks I wouldn't do it. Pujols is amazingly, insanely, silly good but he's 4 years older and he'd be a 1 year rental. He's in his prime and Hanley is still years from his prime as ridiculous as that sounds. Sometimes I think we're spoiled and forget just how great Hanley is.

I think the intent would be that Pujols would immediately start negotiating an extension almost immediately after he was traded just like Detroit did Cabrera right after they gave up Maybin and Miller. On top of that, I would think that St. Louis would eat a large portion of Pujol's salary for 2011.

I think he legitimately wants to play for the Marlins. This isn't the first time his interest has been made public.

I'd rather have Pujols than Ramirez despite the age difference. I like Hanley a lot, but Pujols is undoubtedly the better hitter and is also much better at fielding his position than Ramirez is.

Pujols is better, I don't deny that. Let's say we get him and extend him. In 2012 Hanley will be getting paid $15M and Pujols will probably make something like $27M. Will Pujols really be worth ~$12M a year? I don't think so. Do you know what we could do with an extra $12M?

I agree with you that Hanley would be the only one missed.

Gaby's WAR is 0.9 this season, from baseball-reference.com.

Ricky's is 1.5, he's coming off an injury, and he's beginning to get expensive.

Dominguez and James are unproven.

Pujols has averaged 8.36 WAR in his 10 year career, and is set to make $16 mil in his remaining year of his contract. Obviously he will command more as a free agent, probably somewhere between 20-25 mil per year.

If you want to argue Hanley's contract, remember it's backloaded and about to kick in at 11, 15, 15, and 16 mil in his remaining 4 seasons. Hanley's average WAR for his 5 full season's is 5.8.

Ask yourself this, if you were a Cardinals fan, how would you feel about trading away your 3-time MVP, 8.36 WAR 1B, for a 5.8 WAR SS with an ego, filler 1B, filler SP, and 2 question marks? Who from that group is going to make you say, "Wow, that Pujols deal really worked out!"?

Ego has nothing to do with anything but whatever, moving on.

If I was a Cards fan, no way I would do that trade. That's because the Cards can afford Pujols, they're not going to be crippled keeping him. We will. He's not goint to get between $20-25M, he's going to get between $25M-30M (I don't see how he possibly gets less money than Howard, who's getting $25M).

Pujols is f***ing fantastic, but I don't think it's worth $12M a year more than Hanley.

Not interested in Pujois

Considering the Marlins may be willing to open up the purse strings after the sting of this year and with the new stadium a year away, I'd love to see them surprise everyone by going after Carl Crawford because boy his bat, speed and glove would be such a terrific fit for this team, even the fact that he's a lefty is a bonus. I'd go 7 years, 101 M (he's going to get a 9 figure deal) . To do the deal, I'd gladly jettison Uggla to save the bread, as much as I love the guy, for whatever frontline pitching prospects we can get, perhaps throw in Maybin as a sweetner, move CC to 2nd, and play Tracy or whoever at 3rd until Matt D and his vacuum cleaner glove is ready to take over. Time to turn the page on the Cabrera disaster trade, inject some exciting new blood on this team that will make a difference, and start remaking the image of this team

I'm with Rab on this one. King Albert is not worth $12 million more a year than Hanley, who hasn't even peaked yet.

Ego has nothing to do with anything but whatever, moving on.

Okay, so you're figuring the $12M in 2012? Remember, you also shed whatever Ricky Nolasco's price tag is in 2012, as well as Gaby Sanchez. Hanley, Ricky, and Gaby's cumulative WAR is pretty much equal to Pujols' alone. So at this point, I think asking if Pujols is worth ~$3M more than Hanley, Gaby, Ricky, and 2 prospects in 2012 is more appropriate. I realize this doesn't take into consideration Gaby's or Ricky's replacement. Gaby's is already on the team (Morrison), so we'd be left with taking on the salary of a career 1.1 WAR pitcher to replace Ricky, which could easily be satisfied with a 2008 Chris Volstad, 2010 Alex Sanabia, or some combination of a Nate Robertson plus a marginal improvement by one of our other pitchers.

Gaby will be paid league min in 2012 and Ricky will be in FA (unless we lock him up). The two prospects won't be getting paid anything either.

EDIT: Actually, Ricky will be in Arbi, I forgot he was a super 2. Regardless, it won't be anywhere near ~$3M unless you think Ricky is going to be making 9, which I see as highly unlikely.

Not only did Rab make one of my points for me, but something that hasn't been said is that Hanley Ramirez' production has come as a shortstop; shortstops with that type of offensive production are incredibly difficult to find.

So we're already trading the best shortstop in the game today...we have to include 4 more guys in the deal?

Gaby, whatever.

But, Nolasco is still a pitcher of value, and I don't see why we have to automatically assume that Matt Dominguez is going to be a bust. With the power he's shown in the minors at his young age + his glove, he could very well become a very productive, all-around 3B.

James is a long ways away, and I'd include him in a deal, but he's a left-handed arm currently in an organization desperate for left-handed arms.

We'd be adding one of the best players in the game already, who would come a lot cheaper than Pujols, and is about a handful of years younger than Pujols. I think adding in so much afterwards would be a bit silly.

Not to mention he actually brought up the question of trading Hanley and Stanton for Pujols before proposing his last trade. That would be insane.

^ Exactly.

HOWEVER, if Pujols ended up becoming a free agent after next year, then by all means, GO AFTER HIM LORIA!

But we all know he's not going to be a free agent.

But we all know he's not going to be a free agent.

I wouldn't be so sure about that
