And tomorrow is Tim Hudson. Josh Johnson could pitch and give up two runs and still lose. Hudson is good, but especially good against this team. I don't have high hopes...

It's a shame Sanches gets to pitch in the less meaningful innings, he's our best reliever right now.

More than likely because he's pitching in those situations.

It's not like the guy hasn't been one of our better relievers the last few seasons pitching in relatively important situations.

What has Webb and Mujica done to this point in their careers to be awarded those situations ahead of Sanches?

Mujica had the best K/BB rate among relievers in baseball last year.

Webb is a young arm with good stuff who should be here for the long-term future, getting groundballs over 60% of the time.

I've learned to like Sanches because he gets outs, but there's nothing special about him, really. He's also been better in low leverage situations the past couple of years, which was my point. Anyway, he's been really nice, but Sanches and Mujica will probably not be here after the year, anyway. As a matter of fact, one of those guys is probably not even on the team were it not for the fact that they're out of options, while Badenhop still has options.

Guys like Webb and Dunn are more important long-term for this organization, and it's nice to see they're being used in rather significant roles, and doing okay.

I'd like it if we continued to use Mujica and Sanches in low leverage situations. They seem to fit that role perfectly.

so I was just looking up Hudson's splits because I remember reading his projections before the season and they said he wasn't going to be nearly as good....

whatever, so, I might be reading this wrong, but:

Tim Hudson has NEVER given up a walk when he gets ahead of a batter? what?

He's given up 363.

I think Logan should be hitting 3rd for a bit.

Considering I doubt they'd move Infante down in the order, I wouldn't mind Morrison hitting 3rd and moving Hanley back to leadoff for a bit to see what happens.

I was just about to type this...but would the order be? Hanley, Infante, logan, Mikey, Gaby, CC, Buck, Murphy?

He's given up 363.

where are you seeing that?

:lol

You already need to have 3 balls on a hitter in order to issue a walk. Notice at the top of the chart where it says "0 BB" for "1-0 counts." Obviously he has issued walks after first going 1-0 on a hitter, but a 1-0 count cannot directly result in a walk, so that number is zero.

Same goes for the pitcher being ahead. When a pitcher is ahead, he cannot have 3 balls and cannot directly issue a walk.

You need to look at the "after 0-1," "after 0-2," "after 1-2" columns. Notice he has issued walks under those categories.

As el penguino said, it's the after categories you have to look at. It's actually more than 363 because I forgot to include the "after 0-1" category.

EDIT: So that makes it 537.

It's impossible from the information given to calculate the exact number of walks issued when ahead in the count. You'd have to add the number of 'After 0-1 walks' with the number of 'After 1-2 walks' where the count started 1-0. But there's no way to figure out how many 'After 1-2 walks' started with the count 1-0.

The best you can do is say that the number of walks is greater than 174 but less than 290 (174+116).

Drawing a Venn diagram would help illustrate the point.

And before anyone asks, yes, I was a math major.

CC-Hanley-Lomo-Stanton-Gaby-Infante-(3B)-Buck or,

Hanley-CC-Gaby-Stanton-Lomo-Infante-(3B)-Buck

1. CC 2. HanRam 3. Gaby 4. bigMike 5. Mo 6. Omar 7. Buck

Hanley-Infante-LoMo-Mike Stanton-Gaby-Coggs-buck-(3B)

Coghlan has struck out 8 times this year, and has 4 walks and is hitting sub .230. Infante has been hitting well, and has 2 strikeouts, the way i see it he has been doing a fine job at the 2 spot, let him keep it, and until hanley heats up put coggs in the 6 spot.

Last night's offensive performance (or lack of) literally bored me to sleep.

Volstad looked good the first 2 innings then lost it all rather quickly.

So here we are. Facing our long time rivals, the Braves. Our enemies, our competitors to which we want to destroy in order to win the division. Aaaaand besides all of that, we certainly didn't want Fredi and Uggla to show us up right? So what did we do? Did we bring our A-game? No...it was an awful and depressing game. I can just imagine Uggla laughing afterward. We just better win the series! Tomorrow we got JJ! Stanton, however, continues to hit well. Too bad I can't say the same for Hanley.

Albert Pujols has been sucking just as terribly after 11 games.

No consolation, it does not help us win games if Pujols is having a bad start. We want Hanley to start producing regardless of what Pujols does.

Mujica did give up trice as many home runs as Sanches. Word is Mujica's splitter likes to hang on occasion and gets blasted.

Mujica's career OPS against in late and close situations: .958 to Sanches's .827. Mujica also can go deep into games and come out of long relief, he pitched 93 innings in 09. He's getting the later situations compared to Sanches because he's the new guy.

Webb does have stuff and throw pretty hard, but his minor league numbers aren't very encouraging. Besides 20 innings in AAA he's pretty much struggled. I know Sanches himself did well later in his career after he developed a splitter so anything can happen with Webb, but I don't know how Webb's minor league numbers at this point translate into a long time major leaguer unless something changes.

There is "nothing special about Sanches" but all he seems to do is get outs for us.

It could have been far worse. We could have skipped Volstad, used Johnson and have him lose 1-0 or something, because Chris could have spread 6 hits over 8 innings and still lost this one.

Albert Pujols has been sucking just as terribly after 11 games.

Well, I did manage to get Pujols in my fantasy team as a result.

I got Pujols + Greinke + Dan Uggla for Ryan Howard + Leo Nunez + Pablo Sandoval + Carlos Beltran. The guy was so desperate to get rid of struggling people. Oh, and I picked up Brian Wilson today because he had been dropped by someone else.

.827 is a terrible OPS against. .958 is obviously worse, and they are both really ugly.
