We never had a team of our own untill 1993, im sure most of you had a team that you rooted for before the Marlins birth.

 

Im ashamed to say mine was the Atlanta Braves, only because when I was a child I traveled there alot, and my uncle lived there, and was and still is a Braves fan. The sad thing is, everytime went on a family reunion, Im the only Marlins Fan there, everyone else is either braves or cubs fans..:thumbdown

I rooted for my rattle. That was my favorite team.

I had the pleasure of the Marlins already being around when I became a die hard fan.

The A's and the Blue Jays when I was really young.

I didn't have a single team - which is a large part of the reason why I'm a Marlin fan ...... there were many teams I liked and would be interested in

 

I would say primarily the expos, blue jays, orioles, cardinals and As ...... grew up around yankee fans and this was in their more down years, so I actually liked them and guys like mattingly (always despised the mets) .... couldn't avoid mets, cubs or braves games ..... actually liked the braves when they turned it around, was shocking to see them do well ..... also, I had a buddy who moved from MN who was a huge twins fan so i followed them a bit

 

when the marlins came around it became easy to consolidate and just follow one team from inception and make them "my team" - putting a farm team real close to my home town also helped, even if it was short season a ball

I had two teams growing up the Cincinnati Reds aka The Big Red Machine! My favorite player as a kid was Pete Rose, I had the crouch, switch hit and whatever position Pete was playing I wanted to play. Of course they had a lot of great players beside Pete, HOF'ers Bench, Morgan and Perez along with all-stars Foster, Griffey and Concepcion. One of biggest thrills as a kid was my dad taking me over to Tampa to see the Reds play in spring training. I also was and am a big fan of the Boston Red Sox as they spring trained in the city I grew up in Winter Haven. They like the Reds had a lot of great players HOF'ers Yaz, Fisk and Rice along with all-stars Lynn, Burleson and Tiant. I got to see them every spring until they moved out after 1992. With no "home team" to root for I became a fan of Florida's team the Marlins!

I moved here when I was a little kid, in March of 93. Before that, I was an Astros fan. (I still root for the Stros on the side)

The Reds. The back-to-back world championship seasons of 75 and 76 are my earliest baseball memories and the 79 team going to the NLCS and the 81 team getting robbed despite having MLB's best record all sit as big memories.

You'd kinda be surprised how many people on these boards have only rooted for the Marlins or are just younger than you think.

 

That said, I'm not one of them.... I wasn't much of a sports fan before the Marlins but I was born in New York to a Yankee family so if I was ever asked who my favorite team was, it was the Yankees. Truthfully I knew nothing about them except the way their cap looked just cause I owned one. In '93, when the Fish were born I followed them because it was new, fresh, and was still baseball, my favorite sport by far. But I wasn't a diehard fan yet.

 

Following the '93 season, I watched the World Series, my first one as a fan.... and folks, Joe Carter hooked me big time. I became a HUGE Blue Jays fan cause I fell in love with that moment that Carter had. It rarely gets bigger than that when you're a kid dreaming big. So my teams were the Marlins and Blue Jays (with a beat up old Yankees cap on the side). I still follow the Jays but being in Miami and growing up with the Marlins has made them my number 1 team now for sure.

Cubs and Braves, since their games were broadcast nationally, and I also watched a lot of Cubs games right when I got out of school. But I was 6 when the Marlins started, and I'm pretty sure I was no longer liked the Braves at all much after they won their WS.

The Devil Rays. I stopped being a fan when they changed their name.

Sort of rooted for the O's when I was young, only because of Cal. Wasn't too serious about it. I hated the Braves more than anything. I saw a Marlins Braves game on TV one afternoon - started rooting for the Marlins and have been doing so ever since.
