According to a report in the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional, new Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has reached out to Carlos Zambrano and is interested in bringing the pitcher to Miami.

It makes sense, as the Venezuelan natives have been close friends for a while now. The Cubs recently activated Zambrano from the disqualified list but will be looking to shop him over the winter. He is due $18 million in 2012 and has a $19.25 million vesting option for 2013, but the El Nacional report suggests the Marlins would be willing to pay the right-hander's salary in deferred amounts. The Cubs would surely be OK with accepting next to nothing in return if the Marlins will eat Big Z's contract.

El Toro's Chicago house went up for sale within the last few days as well

Would much rather see the cubs foot the bill.. and that vesting option only kicks in if he wins the Cy Young

That's moronic spending, if we're willing to eat up the contract.

Oh wait, MLBTR is saying that the CUBS would be willing to pay the 18M in deferred payments, and not the Marlins.

That makes a lot more sense. The market for Insane-O Zambrano is non-existent, even with the cubs paying his salary... so the idea of the marlins paying his salary makes no sense whatsoever.

I would love it if Big Z ended up in Florida, especially for little or no of his remaining contract. I mean, yes the guy is nuts, but so is Ozzie. And seriously, having a player like Zambrano who is so passionate could really help energize this team a bit. He is also a quality middle of the line Starter, and probably the best Pinch hitter off the bench. Aside from the Crazy, what is not to like?

Tampering?

Tampering?

SHHHH!!!

Fine with me. He's better than Nolasco and I think Ozzie could keep him somewhat in check.

I want no part of Zambrano if the Marlins have to eat a large portion of that contract.

As Entendu said...

Luzón says that nothing is official but a deal could be reached where the Cubs cut the 30-year-old loose and give him the $18MM that he is owed in deferred payments.

He is additionally an offensive improvement over Wes Helms.

That he is.

If we can get him for basically free then cool.

and over Dewayne Wise, Donnie Murphy, Mike Cameron, and Alfredo Amezaga.

Fair enough... I threw him out there for comedic affect... yet its sad that I'm probably still accurate with my other three options.

If anyone can rein him in and use him to his full potential its Guillen.

Like it's been said, if we can get him for practically nothing then please go for it.

irregardless of ability or potential - is it a wise option to land a new job (any job) and then call up your craziest friend and go "dude! dude, you gotta come here, i can hook you up with a job"

irregardless

Regardless, they're really good friends.

When Zambrano blew off the Cubs in August, he said he was going to retire. Then he changed his mind. He needs some anger management tutelage and Ozzie might be just the guy to give it to him, from a position of authority and control on top of the strong personal friendship.

He can be had for very little, maybe a mill or two plus a prospect for '12. Beats 15 or 20 mill for someone else who also might not work out as expected. Take the chance and spend the 15 or 20 on Fielder or whoever.

It's a small gamble probably worth taking. Minimal risk. Huge possible reward. It might even work.

According to the Marlins web site, he has to end up in the top 4 of the Cy Young voting.

Z just seems to bring so many more negative than positives. His attitude is a serious problem, I don't care how good his numbers are... he's not Halladay or Lee... I don't want him bringing his garbage here. We're trying to change the attitude on this team, he doesn't seem like a good idea.

Attitude problems are wholly overrated.

I don't want Zambrano even if the Cubbies pay us to take him.

People need to realize that getting Zambrano cheap means we can focus on unloading Nolasco's contract.. which means even more money to spend on the top free agents.

You may not like him but getting him sets the wheels in motion for bigger things.

Personally, I think he'd do fine with Ozzie as his manager. He needs to get out of Wrigleyville and start somewhere new.
