December 5, 201114 yr arent Hanley and Reyes the same type of player? why would you want Reyes? i rather spend the money in someone else that can hit for power
December 5, 201114 yr I go out for an HOUR, come back and read: "Breaking News: Jose Reyes" and thought it was official. Quit playing games with my heart! f*** this thread!
December 5, 201114 yr Author arent Hanley and Reyes the same type of player? why would you want Reyes? i rather spend the money in someone else that can hit for power Just because they're both from the Dominican and play SS, doesn't make them the same player.
December 5, 201114 yr JCRMarlinsbeat Juan C. Rodriguez Jeff? You're account has been hacked! RT @JeffPassanOverpay for upside. Offering $111M for Reyes bold move, and I like it. A lot.

December 5, 201114 yr JimBowdenESPNxm JIM BOWDEN Source claims Reyes deal is for $109 m & will be announced in Miami not Dallas not confirmed by anyone directly involved in deal...yet huh.
December 5, 201114 yr It's much harder to find someone to match Reyes' level of production than it is to find someone to get you saves. It's really not that hard to get someone to work the ninth; you shouldn't have to pay anywhere close to $9 million/year to get that. As far as I'm concerned, that's probably close to $7-8 million of money that could have been spent elsewhere. The only thing preventing the Bell deal from being stupid is the unique set of circumstances surrounding the team right now. In terms of baseball economics, however, the Bell deal is idiotic to the core. But it's not outrageous. Outrageous would be offering a closer 20M a year. I agree that it's not an efficient use of money, but it's not an entirely uncommon one. On a WS contending team, which is what we are trying to build, Bell is a great guy to have in the ninth. 9M isn't too bad when we know what we are getting (I hope). It's better than throwing Leo or some inexperienced guy out there in the middle of the playoffs and crossing your fingers.

Jose Reyes is a switch hitter, Hanley is not. That's pretty different.

December 5, 201114 yr Author While the Phillies are signing guys like Laynce Nix, the Marlins are signing guys like Jose Reyes.
December 5, 201114 yr After Reyes, everything else will fall into place. This is a great time to be a Marlins fan. We are being rewarded for sticking with them through the tough times with a promising future. Signing Reyes is more about making the team better...it's a statement to the fans and the baseball world that the Marlins are for real. Be patient...players outside the organization are watching to see if the Fish will walk the walk. I'm not talking about just this year's FA's...I mean future FA's that want to play for a contending team every year in a great atmosphere.
