August 23, 201213 yr The problem I have with using attendance as an excuse, although it must suck to play in front of no one vs. the energy, is that somehow it does not affect Tampa as they continue to excel, win divisions, make the playoffs etc-all in front of 9-11000, and even worse, cowbells and even worse than that having to be interviewed by Kallas. And Treanor being the one to critique-ok, that explains his horrid numbers.
August 23, 201213 yr Hanley didn't even say anything bad about our attendance; that was Matt Treanor. Well, it's assumed Hanley held a gun to Treanor's head.
August 24, 201213 yr Author I'm not sure how you can get an accurate count of the gate attendance just by watching games on TV, especially considering how huge that place is. The bottom line is that the Dodgers fanbase has been one of the best in baseball in attendance. That's nothing like the Marlins situation. The problem with the White Sox I think is that their ticket prices are way too high. They have a horrible upper deck and they charge a lot for those seats. I remember reading that their average ticket price is in the top five for most expensive in baseball. Actually, the White Sox aren't that bad. The Marlins are an average ticket price of $29.62 while the White Sox sit at $29.00. The White Sox are 10th or 11th, behind teams such as the Marlins, Nationals, Twins, Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Phillies, Cardinals and Astros. The Dodgers are $23.22 and the Angels are at $19.71. The White Sox tickets aren't too high. They White Sox just arent the biggest show in town and it's reflected in attendence. Sidenote: I find it comical some of the most expensive tickets in baseball are the worst teams in baseball. If I looked at it right the Astros are 6th in highest price. fancostexperience.com/pages/fcx/fci_pdfs/8.pdf I guess we see there one of the main reasons that attendance has lagged off. Having an average ticket price that is the 3rd highest in baseball (admittedly with a smaller stadium) in an area that has the one of the highest poverty rates in the US is suicide. Yes there is a lot of monied people in South Fla. There also are way more who live on the edge of poverty or well into it. This area has to have one of the widest gaps in wealth to poor in the country. For many people in Miami, especially those who have less discretionary income the Marlins, if they stay at those prices will be pricing a lot of people out of going. Is it really worth it to maintain high ticket prices and have empty seats or lower the prices 20% and fill 2,000 or 3,000 more of them on a nightly basis ? I could see a huge drop off in attendance next year unless they do something to get people re-interested in the team.
August 30, 201213 yr Who cares about a backup to a backup catcher's opinion? Please, the only thing Matty is good for is getting his wife to throw out the first pitch or give an interview.

The city of Miami proper has a poverty rate well in excess of the national average, but the same cannot be said for South Florida.
August 30, 201213 yr There was nothing wrong with the article. I tried to believe there was, but in reality there wasn't. As has already been said he wasn't performing here. He seems to be doing a respectable job with the Dodgers nothing great but not bad either.

Samson outright said he would be happy if Broward and Palm Beach fans only come to 5 games a year, they are concentrating on South Dade and the biz section to fill the stadium. Paraphrasing just a bit, but almost a direct quote. That's just the tip of the iceberg how the team has been alienating the rest of South Florida away from the team. You don't crap on a large clientel base and then expect them to wipe your butt afterwards. Marlins Park......Otherwise known as Loria's Titanic.

Yes because we all know how well broward and palm beach supported the team when it was closer. I do not understand what Bob means about "crap on a large clientel". Based on the amazing support in earlier years from the north, the marlins marketing money is used more towards the people who are likely to consider going to a game ( I assume that is what you mean-yet I wouldn't waste my time to find proof of it). Yet, I doubt that Broward and specifically Palm Beach is ignored. There is advertising and media marketing to the north and I have not received any special privelege for living in North Dade, other than being closer. You of all people surprise me with the act that somehow it is not fair the stadium was not built further north. No free T-shirts that you guys in Broward or Palm Beach didn't get offered. No one is crapping on the fans to the north. If you, after all these years, have decided it is not worth your effort to continue to go and buy some tickets, then do not go-but stop looking for BS excuses (your favorite term) to justify and rationalize your choice.

September 1, 201213 yr there were a lot more empty seats than full seats last night. and the Mets were in town. and it was Friday. oof
September 1, 201213 yr there were a lot more empty seats than full seats last night. and the Mets were in town. and it was Friday. oof Yeah, it was sad. Though, the Mets have nothing to do with it. They haven't been a good draw for a couple years now since they became terrible. Shame... we at least used to be able to count on that.

Marlins fans just aren't good in general. And many people in Miami are fans of other teams. Maybe with time and history we'll develop a fanbase that'll go to games even in futile seasons ala Cubs.
September 14, 201213 yr http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-0914-dodgers-notes-20120914,0,2658087.story Hanley not being nice again. "We just realized we couldn't win with him," Samson told mlb.com. "It was that simple." Ramirez, enjoying a pennant race at Dodger Stadium, shot back quickly Thursday afternoon. "Now are they winning without me?" Ramirez said. Since the Marlins traded Ramirez to L.A., they have fallen into last place in the National League East. Their winning percentage has fallen — .464 before the trade, .383 after — and they will finish with their third consecutive losing season His explanation for the better play in L.A.? "Less stinking," he said. Ouch. But an interesting note - The Dodgers, like the Marlins, have not fared as well since the trade — winning percentages of .541 before and .467 after
September 14, 201213 yr I think the beginning of Hanley's demise here began with the home-run derby. He was a contact hitter who could go for power when needed,.. After his 2nd place finish in the derby, I think he saw himself as a power hitter, going for the bomb on every AB instead of the single for the RBI. I was the biggest Hanley fan, but good riddance. Its obvious now that he was never going to play at his full potential here. He was mentally done. Hopefully the franchise re-invests the money they saved from his contract into a good free agent this off-season, and we shall be in our way. I think Hanley will pull the same BS with the Dodgers some time in the future. I dont think he will ever get the praise he thinks he deserves.

Miami Dade County as a whole also does not have an excessive poverty rate compared to the nation. The suburbs are not in the city proper, thus their higher income levels do no factor into the City of Miami numbers. Using Overtown + Liberty City + Little Havana to measure the income of potential Marlins attendees is absurd. The stadium is running at 73% capacity, which is top-half of the league, and 3rd among teams with losing records.
September 14, 201213 yr I don't get it... he's not really playing that well in LA. Sure he has a few homers, but he's also committed errors in 2 games that were go ahead runs which resulted in them losing. Since becoming a dodger he is hitting .260, is striking out nearly 25% of the time, and been caught stealing 3 out of 6 times. I guess his OPS is over .800 (.810) since becoming a dodger, but so far, it looks like same old Hanley we've had to endure for the last 2.5 years.
September 14, 201213 yr f*** him. *shrug* Let him think he's the sh*t, and once he starts to suck again and the "Dodger Faithful" are booing him, maybe he'll shut up.
September 14, 201213 yr Are we seriously still crying about Hanley? Let it go. Yoko bro, I know you liked Hanley but at this point it's not really crying. The guy has done enough things for some fans to dislike him and he really didn't have anything worthy to overshadow those facts.
