November 27, 201213 yr Maybe just maybe Samson actually cares. lol. More like this Pr nightmare has blown up in their faces far worse than they ever expected
November 27, 201213 yr Maybe just maybe Samson actually cares. Of course he cares. The whole FO we pretty much know are baseball fans, and it's more fun to sit and watch a winning team..beyond the money angle. . But don't fall for this e-mail.We all understand that there was no guarantee last year and we're all dissapointed. The problem comes in with how the roster "problem" is solved. I do believe that Samson/Loria had a moral obligation to field a respectable team at or somewhere near MLB average. Their answer to strip to the bones while rebuilding, essentially trading 30M a year in their pockets vs. 30M worth of fan enjoyment/excitement is unacceptable. No matter how many e-mails Samson answers that's not right and not good business either. I still can't believe we're looking at the opening day roster right now. I'd be surprised if the Marlins didn't go out and add some immediate pizzazz, competitiveness, and stability before the dust settles.
November 28, 201213 yr PS I got a less fulfilling email. He just basically called me rude and told me there were better ways to funnel my anger. I mean... I did just tell him 'f*** you', so... fair enough D! Still, you're an asshat.
November 30, 201213 yr Author A pretty good read about the behind the scene aspect of the trade.. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/11/29/anatomy-of-the-12-player-blue-jays-marlins-trade
November 30, 201213 yr i think this was my favorite part "The Marlins insist on Mathis being included."
November 30, 201213 yr i think this was my favorite part "The Marlins insist on Mathis being included." lol yeah what's up with that? The guy is awful offensively. I guess he's got some decent D, but I don't get it
November 30, 201213 yr The team was dumping Buck and needed somebody to pair with Brantley. Seems pretty straight-forward to me.
November 30, 201213 yr The team was dumping Buck and needed somebody to pair with Brantley. Seems pretty straight-forward to me. But why is a below average player a dealbreaker on a deal of that magnitude? That's why it seems silly.
November 30, 201213 yr That doesn't make sense. The Marlins could have dropped him as much as the Jays could have included him.
November 30, 201213 yr It seems like the Blue Jays were reluctant to trade him because they had recently given him a contract and they were trying to be loyal. Honestly, I would've loved to hear the exact conversation. It's even dumber for the Blue Jays. They almost didn't make a "splash" because they were hesitant on giving up Jeff Mathis. Lol. Odd that d'Arnaud's name was apparently never even mentioned.
November 30, 201213 yr When I read about that Jeff Mathis debacle, I was simply astonished about the level of retardation going on among the reps of both teams.
November 30, 201213 yr It's pretty great. I would have loved to see the reaction of Jays fans had the trade fell through because of Mathis.
November 30, 201213 yr The Mathis thing is on the Jays, not us. I think Mathis was clearly someone we wanted literally to occupy Buck's spot as a backup. In that regard, I like that the Marlins insisted on him. That way we don't have to wonder who's our backup catcher. We got Buck off our hands and filled his roster spot in one swoop.
November 30, 201213 yr I love that the Marlins insisted on him! It makes the whole situation so much more humiliating.
November 30, 201213 yr Yeah, Mathis is such a negligible player, it's still silly to think that they would back out of the deal if he weren't included (even if they need another back-up catcher).
November 30, 201213 yr By the way, that scouting report part of the article can't be real, right? It's more absurd than that scene in Moneyball where all of those Broncobobs are sitting around the table talking intangibles.
December 1, 201213 yr By the way, that scouting report part of the article can't be real, right? It's more absurd than that scene in Moneyball where all of those Broncobobs are sitting around the table talking intangibles. Is the entire article real? I mean, he's saying Jeff Mathis nearly cost the Blue Jays the deal.
