Eovaldi, Alvarez to the DL; Jose Fernandez called up

Featured Replies

Little nugget from Juan Rodriguez:

Since '90, five rookie starters have totaled 100-plus innnigs in age 20 season: Sabathia, Bonderman, Greinke, Kershaw, Porcello.

Well that's pretty promising...

So great, some of the few things to look forward to this season were finding out if Alvarez and Eovaldi could become part of a rotation long-term, and whether Logan can get back on track.

Off to a great start so far.

Did they just freaking notice that Alvarez and Eovaldi were injured?? The day before the season opener? This is a joke, seriously.

And honestly - either Fernandez was ready or he wasn't. If he was ready in the first place, he's not blocked by Kevin Slowey and Wade LeBlanc. If he wasn't ready, then he isn't now either. It's dumb. Maybe he's ready, but there's no point in pushing the issue. No point at all.

He had 55 innings at single-A last season, even then they were limiting him to 5 innings per outing.

So he's pretty much staying up all year? That's what I got from the tweet which quotes Beinfest.

I agree this screams Loria.

Excited to see what he can do. Every one raved about his stuff and his make up.

I for one think there is a lot of hypocrisy on these boards. I realize that we have bad ownership. I also realize that Beinfest and Co. have had more downs, than ups lately. However, if we hold someone back that might be ready because of the super 2 status, then we are being the same cheap old Marlins. If we promote someone that might be ready because a need arises, then they are incompetent. It just doesn't matter what they do. Some of you and or from the looks of it most of you are going to bash this front office no matter what they do.

From what I can tell they did have a plan B. Slowey, Maine, Koehler, Sanabia, and Hand. Not many teams have 7 or 8 quality starters in their rotation. My guess is that Fernandez showed them that he was ready during the spring but because they didn't have a pressing need they sent him down to be cautious. Now that we have the need, they went with the best available option to makes us the most competitive. I would call that a competent move.

I guess to an extent the front office and Loria deserve this negativity because of everything they have put us through. However, I for one am just going to cheer for the team , hope for the best and enjoy the season as much as I can. I'm old enough to remember what it was like to grow up down here without a team and I enjoy having this team here regardless of the ownership.or the front office. The season starts tomorrow and I can't wait. I will be at our home opener because I love baseball, I love the Marlins, and I love Miami. Hope to see some of you there.

They are beyond delusional if they expect to compete for a championship this year. So, why start his arbitration clock and bring him a year closer to both more $$$ and free agency? Very few people here, if any, were suggesting that Fernandez start the year in the rotation. Leaving him in AA would have been viewed as smart, not cheap.

Tomorrow is opening day, and I want to enjoy it, and just enjoy baseball in general. Let's just all have some fun with it.

Go Marlins

You're being ridiculous. Many of us are just as much concerned with player development. Promoting a player to the big leagues from high A is irresponsible.

Secondly, delaying the arbitration clock isn't about being cheap. Much of it is related to extending the club controlled years and delaying free agency. It gives the organization more time to assess the player's health and talent before offering a contract extension.

It sounds like the Marlins are panicking because two of their starters went down. That's not enough reason to rush a future star.

He pitched two innings all spring (one appearance in relief).

I wasn't really arguing for or against the move. My only point is that it doesn't matter what they do, they are going to get ripped on these boards. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that this is a forum to express those opinions. However, I just believe that their perspective has become so jaded because of prior disappointments, that all they want to do is hate this organization. I guess it helps them cope with the situation. We've been through a few of these fire sales and I don't remember these boards being so negative before. I'm not just talking about their initial reaction to the dismantling but just to the team in general. I've been a regular reader (don't post much) of these boards for a long time and it's just getting really difficult to read all of this negativity. Maybe we should make a thread for positive posts only.. LOL

In Bull Durham isn't that what happened? I am pretty sure it was some level of A ball. One of the little things that bothered me from the movie.

That's why I said that it was my guess. I really didn't follow spring training as closely this year because I expanded my business and I didn't have the time. Either way I'm sure they must have seen something. It would be easier to call up Koehler, or Move Maine into the rotation, and blame injuries instead of rushing someone that you know isn't ready to get beat up. Whether they are desperate or not they must think the kid is ready. I'm not sure. You could be right. I guess we just have to wait and see.

My only point is that it doesn't matter what they do, they are going to get ripped on these boards.

This makes no sense. Who complained when the Marlins sent Yelich to AA? The same goes for Fernandez.

There is a legitimate reason to rip Loria for this move. People would have been silent if Fernandez had been sent down--just like they were with Yelich.

If he manages to kick ass this season, is it possible the Marlins sign him to a deal similar to Matt Moore? Maybe that's why they don't mind calling him up.

Don't you think it's irresponsible to base such an important decision on two innings of exhibition play? If they deemed him to be ready on account of spring, they are less cautious than I thought.

My guess is that with Turner being a mess right now and Eovaldi and Alvarez injured, the Marlins were worried that they might actually be a 120 loss team and decided to roll the dice with Fernandez rather than go with one of their AAAA starters.

No matter what the outcome is I think that this is a dumb move.

He pitched two innings all spring (one appearance in relief).I take it split squad games aren't good enough for you then?

I personally saw him pitch 3 innings against the cardinals and Redmond warm him him between innings. It would be foolish to believe they based his development on two innings of spring ball.

While I don't believe you are intelligent, I thought you weren't that foolish.

First of all, I'm not suggesting that they based his fate on just spring. I was disagreeing with what Rydawg said about Fernandez "showing" the Marlins "something" in spring training to warrant a call-up. He could not have shown them "something" to warrant a transition from A+ to the big leagues simply because he pitched very few innings there (and, yes, B games don't really have much weight).
