Posted September 26, 201311 yr clarkspencer @clarkspencer 1m Greg Dobbs to re-sign with #Marlins, avoid free agency. http://tinyurl.com/k332kmz Because when you have the oppurtunity to sign a guy coming off 6 straight sub .700 OPS seasons before free agency even starts, you pull that damn trigger.
September 26, 201311 yr Looks like Loria filled that vacancy for 1st and 3rd in one signing... This can only mean good things for the free agency period!
September 26, 201311 yr Don't mind it, probably a real cheap deal and he's just a pinch hitter anyway for the most part. He had a down year in that role but he was solid as a PH before this season.
September 26, 201311 yr Lol I think I have a new least favorite player. Gotta keep the Dobber because of his leadership and intangibles! That professionalism will never be replaced!!

It's a roster spot that can be better spent on a guy who's younger and more versatile. Pinch-hitting is not a skill. It's hitting and he's a bad hitter.
September 26, 201311 yr Don't they already have a younger and cheaper version of this in Lucas? I guess its the lefty bat thing
September 26, 201311 yr I think being a lefty is big factor in it, yes. Not everyone can pinch-hit anyway. I do consider it a skill personally. Yes I know, Dobbs didn't pinch-hit well this year either but he has a good track record at least. I don't see this is as a problem, it's not like it's going to change what we do this off-season.
September 26, 201311 yr But guys, we need the Dobber around to tell the young guys, "that ground ball to short with a runner on third and less than two outs, that's the shit!"
September 26, 201311 yr I have a problem with paying him $1.7 million bucks. They could have re-signed him for 600K late in the winter, as his phone wasn't going to be ringing off the hook.
September 26, 201311 yr What're the chances the marlins pay anyone besides the arb guys more than $1.7m?
September 26, 201311 yr Just think about it. Who's gonna sign with Marlins as a hell for FA player? I think Loria and FO deserved it on themselves.
September 26, 201311 yr What're the chances the marlins pay anyone besides the arb guys more than $1.7m? There's a decent chance. Question though will be if the guy who winds up getting it was worth it.
September 26, 201311 yr Just think about it. Who's gonna sign with Marlins as a hell for FA player? I think Loria and FO deserved it on themselves. I would rather see Loria pocket 1.7 million dollars than spend it on Greg Dobbs.

I would rather see Loria pocket 1.7 million dollars than spend it on Greg Dobbs. I find it shocking Dobbs can command that much $ from the stingiest FO in baseball (That clearly has no regard for WAR or any other relevant baseball stats). The guy is completely and utterly worthless.
September 26, 201311 yr lower batting average than last years, and get a pay increase? how is that fair?
September 26, 201311 yr This has a higher AAV than his last contract. Dobbs got worse. This team f***ing sucks. Who does shit like this?
September 26, 201311 yr Maybe this is Beinfest f***ing around with Loria before he sees the door? lol I mean, would we spend anything LESS than $1.7 Mill on our starting third baseman next year? lol I feel like Zack Cox could be Greg Dobbs version 2.0 for the league minimum. I don't understand this at all...
September 26, 201311 yr lower batting average than last years, and get a pay increase? how is that fair? Yea, even by the FO's backasswards view on stats, this shouldn't have happened.
