September 26, 201312 yr That's what I'm hearing. Maybe Loria's ramping up his binge spending and we sign everybody this offseason and win the World Series!
September 26, 201312 yr Who's our next signing??? Pierre or Polanco? I'm gonna guess Polanco since he's right-handed! #balance #stopit #noseriouslystopit
September 26, 201312 yr Just think about it. Who's gonna sign with Marlins as a hell for FA player? I think Loria and FO deserved it on themselves. I would rather see Loria pocket 1.7 million dollars than spend it on Greg Dobbs. HAHAHAHAHA This is the best thread. I knew it when I clicked on it, and it does not disappoint. Thanks be to you, MB.com.
September 26, 201312 yr Maybe this is Beinfest f***ing around with Loria before he sees the door? lol I mean, would we spend anything LESS than $1.7 Mill on our starting third baseman next year? lol I feel like Zack Cox could be Greg Dobbs version 2.0 for the league minimum. I don't understand this at all... When even Wild Card can't justify it....... I think, for the first time, I might actually consider rooting for a new team. I'm not moving back to FL anytime soon, anyway. I'll never leave MB.com, though.
September 26, 201312 yr Loria worked this deal out with Dobbs' agent personally. Yeah, this is maybe the worst (baseball-related) thing I've ever heard.
September 26, 201312 yr They agreed to this in June? I was hoping the Carlos Lee trade happened in June also, so that this could be arguably the 2nd-dumbest June move they've made. But that trade was on the glorious day known as July 4.
September 26, 201312 yr That's what I'm hearing. Thanks goes to Clark spencer and the herald In case you missed it, as reported by our own Barry Jackson.... The Marlins are re-signing infielder/pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs, who was due to become a free agent. He said a deal was struck between his agent and owner Jeffrey Loria. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports in a follow-up tweet, Dobbs will receive a salary of $1.7 million on the one-year extension that was agreed upon in June.
September 26, 201312 yr yeah mentions that in the article. why would you do this in June? why 1.7 for a pinch-hitter on a bad team when you have no money? why a raise for a pinch-hitter with no pop coming off a bad season? why why why etc. the answer to all of these is Loria.
September 26, 201312 yr Not everyone can pinch-hit anyway. I do consider it a skill personally. Yes I know, Dobbs didn't pinch-hit well this year either but he has a good track record at least. Going back to this, I do not think that this is true. Pinch-hitting is considered a skill because of counting stats like pinch hits. The reality is that if you give a mediocre hitter enough chances to fail, he's going to fail more often than not. For his career, Dobbs is a .253/.300/.411 (.711 .OPS) hitter as a pinch-hitter. That's basically what he is as a hitter in his career when he's not pinch-hitting. Hitters don't really get better or worse based on certain situations unless if we're relying on small samples. Since 2010, Greg Dobbs has a -2.5 WAR. I'm glad we've made him a priority. Loria couldn't wait until the offseason for this one!
September 26, 201312 yr the terms may be a little high but dobbs has always been pretty solid. he is a nice lefty off the bench. this signing is the least of our problems.
September 26, 201312 yr the terms may be a little high but dobbs has always been pretty solid. he is a nice lefty off the bench. this signing is the least of our problems. We just gave a guy who has no business being in a big league uniform (as a player, anyway) 1.7 million dollars. That kinda sucks. Considering how cheap Loria is, every penny counts.
September 26, 201312 yr the terms may be a little high but dobbs has always been pretty solid. he is a nice lefty off the bench. this signing is the least of our problems. This signing is a microcosm of everything that is wrong with this organization
September 26, 201312 yr Furthermore Dobbs is not a nice anything. On any other team he'd get a minor league deal/spring training invite AT BEST.
September 26, 201312 yr At least Perry Hill should love this move. WAR, what is it good for?!? WATCH THE GAMES! Watch Dobbs! Watch him...into outs like a professional...
September 26, 201312 yr so hey gives dobbs 1.7 but eat nolasco salary to get a better prospect? marlins are a joke
September 26, 201312 yr I never hated Greg Dobbs when he was somewhat useful as a pinch hitter, but he's been really bad for a while. Never thought somebody could get a pay raise for playing substantially worse than before. So Dobbs is the new Helms? That'll make for some fun times on the board next year.
September 26, 201312 yr lol If you don't like the deal, don't blame President of Baseball Operations Admin Beinfest or General Manager Mike Hill as neither had anything to do with it. Owner Jeffrey Loria, the source said, negotiated the pact unbeknownst to his top baseball officials.
