January 14, 201610 yr A week ago the Miami Marlins had done very little this offseason. They hired a new manager and revamped the coaching staff and the front office. As far as the roster they resigned Ichiro and Jeff Mathis as well as made minor transactions (waiver claims, rule 5, outrights, etc.) Now in the past several days we've signed a free agent starting pitcher, added depth to the bullpen/rotation, signed a platoon partner for Bour, and extended our second baseman, checking off all our offseason goals. Combined with the previous moves, along with the keeping of Ozuna as well as the thought that they are still searching for modest pitching upgrades... what do you think of this offseason now?
January 14, 201610 yr I'm happy. The Chen signing makes me thinks the FO might actually be buying into analytics which makes me very happy
January 14, 201610 yr This is still a BAD OFFSEASON. Subtract Alvarez and ADD Chen when you could of had both made NO SENSE. We added a great bat for a contending team in Johnson whose a douche but a great hitter and perfect platoon for Bour, but we are still missing a starter and a bat that matters. If they pull an Ozuna trade for a good to average pitcher, and somehow sign CESPEDES. That will be a good to GREAT offseason. Im not blinded. You cant slap me than massage me and pretend it didn't happen. They have work to do! We are NOT contenders for anything yet.

You cant slap me than massage me and pretend it didn't happen. They have work to do! They signed one of the best left-handed pitchers on the market, found a platoon partner for Bour and extended Gordon for an absolute bargain. As far as Alvarez goes, his arm is hanging on by a thread. Calling the offseason incomplete or average is fine, but calling it "bad" is silly.
January 14, 201610 yr If you consider that they subtracted and then added a success so be it. We have work to do. Unless we cover the holes we need to fill and not consider stop gaps permanent solutions like we have done for ages. Cause as of right now we are going to be in trouble this year. If they did all this, they need to finish what they started. Get aggressive on the trade market, and sign some guys. This team is so close, yet will falter cause of our cheap ways. And again, im not downing the fact that we signed Chen at all. I believe in my heart he is going to pitch to a 2+ ERA this year and will be the steal of the offseason as far as Starting pitchers go.... IM just sating saying finish what you started!
January 14, 201610 yr Author Part of me, as a fan, would love to think about Cespedes playing here and in our lineup. But, financially, adding Cespedes might actually be the worst thing this team could do this offseason.

But they didn't "subtract" anything. Alvarez is basically dead weight at this point. We need one more SP. Do that, and then you are looking at a playoff contender assuming the key guys stay healthy (which has been a major problem for us for years now).
January 14, 201610 yr I really don't think we can complain about "losing" Alvarez until we see what happens with his arm. It could fall off and he could never be an effective MLB pitcher again. Granted, $4 million may have been worth taking the chance, but we haven't lost anything with Alvarez until he shows that he is still something. As for the offseason, I love the Chen signing, and Johnson is a good platoon partner for Bour. Also, keeping Dee for pennies (relatively) was an awesome deal. We still don't have enough to compete in 2016 unless almost everything goes right, but it's a step in the right direction for sure.
January 14, 201610 yr Bad offseason. The Chen signing basically replaces Henderson Alvarez whom they let go. All of the other moves made recently are pretty "whatever" at best.
January 14, 201610 yr Author Any offseason that does not result in playoffs is bad Wait, what? really?
January 14, 201610 yr Wait, what? really? seriously, that's dumb. any offseason that does not result in a world series is a bad
January 14, 201610 yr Any offseason that does not result in playoffs is bad No, this isn't the NBA where pretty much every team makes the playoffs and the regular season does not matter. An offseason that improves the team is a good one. An offseason that makes the team worse is a bad one. If a team makes moves now that ultimately win the team a World Series in 2017, does that make this a bad offseason? Baseball is a much more long-term, slow play sport. One good basketball player could make the 76ers into the Warriors, but put Mike Trout on the Braves and they still lose 90 games.
January 14, 201610 yr They got rid of Tommy so the offseason is still shit. YES!! They need to make that their next Priority after finding another SP. lol
January 14, 201610 yr I'd say one or two more pieces could make this team interesting. Obviously another SP, but I have a gut feeling we get Cespedes. Think about that protection for Stanton (if he decides to play a full season). I know Mattingly and Bonds are openly stating they want to keep Ozuna, but Cespedes value has to decreasing daily, he's that guy the Marlins need to expand the payroll for. and trade Ozuna for that SP possibly rather than sign one.
January 14, 201610 yr Author they're a SP and Power bat away to be a good/excellent off season Ok but where do they put the power bat?
