THRILLHO
https://www.mlb.com/marlins/news/dan-straily-wei-yin-chen-continue-to-progress/c-271820604 Like everyone else I’m looking around for something to grab onto. Yesterday we got these updates on Straily and Chen’s (hahahaaha) rehab progress. No definitive timetablesl but it is clear both of these guys are throwing and working toward a return. The rotation is a bit of a mess now, but if Straily and Chen (hahaha) can be a part of it this summer it will add some intrigue. Urena starts are always interesting to say the least. It seems that he is prone to command issues early but once he settles in he performs well. Jarlin was very exciting last night. Put those two guys in with Straily and Chen (hahaa) and you got something on most night to focus on. I’m not saying this is great or anything, but it is something. I thought about tossing Alcantara’s name in there as a late May call up. Many of us wanted this for Brinson. I thought he looked terrific for a lot of the spring. But given that he is 22 and we aren’t going anywhere this year I wouldn’t be against holding him down all season. At the very least don’t rush him up. He’s only had one start in AAA this season so there’s nothing there yet to make any judgement calls. If we had a rotation of Straily, Chen, Urena, Garcia, Alcantara the one thing you could say about the Marlins is “tune in and see how the SP does!” Maybe this would enable the team to move Richards into a specialist role in the pen, send Peters and O’Grady down and have Caleb Smith available for long relief, spot starts, or a regular rotation spot again once Chen is out for the year. SilverBullet
If Straily and Chen return any time within the next month I think Straily Chen Urena Garcia and "whoever is best" out of Despaigne Smith Peters and Richards is more than serviceable for us for a while. Remember we're not here to contend so upgrading with Straily and Chen is "enough" to get us a few more wins here and there and seem more respectable than we've been so far. 97marlin
I want Richards to go to triple a. I think he has an idea of how to pitch, he just doesn't have the stuff to play at this level. Maybe in a relief role, but if we have any interest in him starting I'd send him down. Caleb Smith hasn't looked bad. He is still figuring out a few things, but the K's are there. Urena has been a mixed bag. Days of good days of trash. For me Despagne belongs in the pen, and Peters spring did not warrant being on the big league club at all. SilverBullet
if by serviceable you mean worst rotation in mlb yes. That's fine. We're in year one of a rebuild... essentially tanking. But adding Straily and Chen makes us better than we've been the first two weeks and can get us a couple extra wins here and there.

And our pitching staff in general has been unlucky. We are 22 in the league based on FIP. I'm not saying 22 in the league is great, but definitely better than the results on the field. CYmarlins
I think right now the pitching has been okay with the exception of the bullpen in the latter half of games at times. The offense is the one that has been at times inconsistent.
el_gmac
why you keep counting with Chen, he will do one reg start and down he goes to the DL again
THRILLHO
why you keep counting with Chen, he will do one reg start and down he goes to the DL again I’m not counting on Chen to come in here and be great for us. I’m counting on him to attempt a return. Even if he comes back and pitches for a month it gives people something to monitor and take an interest in (even a cynical one if that floats your boat). Even from a point of view that lacks any spirit of competition the guy represents so much of the poor decision making processes from the last couple years that seeing him emerge from the shadows and actually be a part of a Major League Baseball game is something I’d like to see. He can at a minimum be a member of the rotation and allow guys that shouldn’t be here go down to New Orleans and work through their issues. Straily on the other hand can be effective and he can maybe perform up to a standard that may make him marketable this summer. @SilverBullet1929 said it, this is year 1 of a rebuild. These things can take some time. It is all really frustrating but the last two games have been particularly frustrating given the opponent and the nature of the losses. Two nights ago giving up the lead multiple times and squandering a game where Bour finally came and delivered in big spots. Then last night getting a terrific outing from Garcia only to have the pen come in and look totally incompetent.
Erick
Wei-Yin Chen is terrible. Jarlin Garcia, while he belongs in our rotation, is an early season fluke. More of a #3, #4 type starter (maybe, which would be nice long-term).
SilverBullet
with the exception of the bullpen in the latter half of games at times. The bullpen has definitely been better at the start of games. They haven't given up a single run in the first couple of innings this season.

It isn’t unreasonable to think he has room to grow and if he does turn into a number four that isn’t so bad really. Obviously we don’t want a staff of #4 starters in four years time, but there is plenty about Garcia to feel positive about.

But don't worry, Mattingly won't ever let him get into the 7th.
IamTheLaw
I don't think I'll ever grow to like Urena.. The sound from the first pitch on opening day coming off the bat of Happ's is still ringing in my head..

EricWiener
if by serviceable you mean worst rotation in mlb yes. Not fair, with all 4 pitching to their potential it could be as high as 26th.

You call it fluke, I call it coaching and growth. Look at urena last year, did you expect him to have a good season as he did. This organization is looking pretty deep in pitching, and that's without seeing trevor Roger's and Braxton Garrett, sandy is gonna be a good pitcher or dominant close same as Guzman. I say look out, it's the position players that are lagging behind.
