November 1, 20187 yr Losing one more star player like JT would cause huge damage to Jeter's attempt to build a sustainable winner in South Florida, one huge damage happened already in the last off-season after they're forced to trade Yelich so I don't think Jeter could afford to lose another star player after just one year in the same reason, so it's possible Jeter would begging JT to stay and do his best to meet their asking price.
November 1, 20187 yr https://www.mlb.com/news/jt-realmuto-is-incredibly-valuable-via-trade/c-300061042 You could think to trade him because his super high value, but you could think to keep him because you would never finding another one.
November 1, 20187 yr I don't think I'd want to sign him for AAV 20 mil per year. If we assume 1 WAR is worth about 6 mil, then the expectation is he would need to generate 10.5 WAR to break even, 3.5 war per year. I think that is what I would expect him to produce. That makes the contract more like a free agent contract, where you are paying market price for every "win" generated by the player. I'd rather trade him so we could potentially underpay for each win. We saw with Stantons contract how a free agent type contract can be bad for the organization. I'm certain that we can get a package where it would be very difficult to imagine less than 3.5 war from the players we get in return.
November 1, 20187 yr Ideally though, you’d want a mix of Mike Soroka or Kyle Wright/Austin Riley/another player in their top seven. It’s not hard to envision a bidding war in which we already heard rumors of Mike/Austin offered, where they throw in another one of their top seven. At first I felt this trade sounded too optimistic on our end but if Soroka and Riley already get the deal then a bidding war with say the Nationals and other top clubs could easily motivate them to trade one more imo Ian Anderson, Austin and one of there catching prospects who are 21 or 22. Honestly though, I'd like to move him to the Ray's... Wander Franco is the exact type of guy who would be perfect for our long term plan. He is 17, he is a power hitting middle infielder, who projects to be an all-star. He would add another teenager with a high upside. If we can pair him with one of there pitchers, Or if we could some how manage to get an offer that includes Mckay, I'd even throw in Dietrich and Stekinrider. Those two guys would be HUGE.

I don't think comparing Stanton's deal to a hypothetical Realmuto one as outlined above is a fair comparison.
November 1, 20187 yr I don't think comparing Stanton's deal to a hypothetical Realmuto one as outlined above is a fair comparison. I'm just trying to emphasize that a free agent type deal money wise, might not be the best approach going forward. That's all.
November 1, 20187 yr I'm just trying to emphasize that a free agent type deal money wise, might not be the best approach going forward. That's all. At some point, though, they'll have to change the culture, and show that they're willing to pay and keep people instead of always just recycling guys into other prospects. They're going to have to have a Werth type signing to show things are different. Obviously you don't want to wildly overpay - I'm not advocating that - I just don't think it should be "club friendly deal, well under market value or nothing, bye!"

I understand that, the only problem I have with making that sort of deal at this point is I don't feel we are very close. He could legitimately be the all star on a bad team, being paid market value. Every additional win is worth significantly less to us, than say the Braves or Phillies. So we would be paying a market value that assumes each marginal win is valuable. I think if this were next year and I could truly believe that we could be a .500 club next year, then yeah, absolutely. Give him a market price deal. It would create a lot of good will, and allow us to keep our young talented catcher. I just think if we have to pay him like that we would be better served to spend that money elsewhere.

November 1, 20187 yr Words. Drivel. Feel so much better that Jeter has a plan. lol It was a perfect answer to a question from a reporter. Those who are in the #FuckJeter camp are helpless. To rip this quote shows it all. I have said when he is wrong, but having a problem with this quote makes you seem blind and bias.
November 1, 20187 yr We can all find comfort in the fact that we will unequivocally get an answer to the Jeter/Sherman question. If they spend $$$$ in 2020/2021 to vault the team into playoff contention, they truly did have a plan. If they don’t spend money, it all will have been lies.

Couple of things. First and foremost, I like Realmuto a lot. He is a really good player. However, he is not even in the same league as other star players we have dealt. Guys like Miguel Cabrera, Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich are franchise-changers. Realmuto, while very good, is not. Second, it would not cause "huge damage" to Jeter's attempt to build a sustainable winner if he a trades a guy who demanded a trade, and begging someone to stay is not how you run an organization. Third, by the time we are seriously ready to contend, Realmuto is going to be around 32-33 years old. That's pretty old for a catcher. You might as well trade him now and get some valuable pieces back who are going to be ready to contribute once this team is prepared to win. You cannot equate trading Realmuto to the deals for Cabrera, Stanton and Yelich. The Cabrera trade was flat out dumb and was probably the worst move in the history of the franchise (how they didn't buy out his arbitration years with an extension like they did with Hanley and others later on is beyond me). Stanton and Yelich were dealt to clear salary and it HURT. Realmuto is just not on the same level as those guys.

November 2, 20187 yr I believe they trade Yelich due to he wants to leave Miami, not in order to clear salary. Of course that's why. They made it clear they wanted to keep him and his contract was team friendly anyway.
November 2, 20187 yr Why Realmuto is more valuable than we think. https://amp.mlb.com/300061042-jt-realmuto-is-incredibly-valuable-via-trade.amp.html?ymd=20181031&content_id=300061042&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb&__twitter_impression=true
November 2, 20187 yr I'm intended not to read the posts of this thread before due to believe we would lock up him, but I would beginning to check these posts now… Also beginning to check the top100 prospects list.

He's always been a athletic catcher and in great shape. This isn't a super strong catcher like Piazza whose Muscles can betray him, Pudge whose weight can bring him down or McCann who was super intellegent but didn't have an elite physic. Mauer was concussions I believe, and Posey has been more maintence. I can see us doing what the Giants do with Posey.
November 2, 20187 yr I feel like the age isn't something to get too hung up on. A wise person once said that age is just a number.
November 2, 20187 yr Words. Drivel. Feel so much better that Jeter has a plan. I believe Jeter had a plan in the beginning.
