There really are a lot of moving parts and that's why WAR is jumpy year to year.

"Replacement Player" is determined by the league that year, and it changes. So one player could have five absolutely identical seasons and have a different WAR each of those five years.

A proper SABR person will even say to you, though, "WAR is not a catch-all stat but it does its best to try and be one."

Basically, WAR is for conversation more than anything. If two guys are close (say 6.5 and 6.3 WAR), you can start looking at other areas and assess who you believe is better. Now if it's 8 WAR vs 4 WAR, pretty easy choice there.

Haha, I think one of the issues with WAR is the name. Think of it as "amount above average" or something like that. (Super rough calculations coming up) so a guy with 0.0 WAR is the average-est player in the league. A guy with negative WAR is actually bad and potentially costing his team wins. A guy with a huge number (5+) is outstanding. A lot of folks get caught up thinking "okay so he has 5 WAR that means his team will win 5 more games because of him" but that's not how WAR works. But it is statistically-backed and factual, unlike CLIMATE CHANGE WHICH IS JUST THE MEDIA INVENTING THINGS, RIGHT GUYS?
