You should bust your ass on deadline day even if it's to find a trade between two non-contenders that might fix a need like the Jazz trade a few years ago (yes I know that's not a deadline trade).
August 10, 20224 yr One more SUCK season, who to blame ? Sherman (cheap) Jeter and Denbo (bad) Mike Hill (shouldn't leave) Ng (inability) Don (bad) All players besides Sandy (bad)

Yeah, if Mike Hill is here, this team is probably a lot more competitive, really. Not his fault he isn't here. Unless you think he SHOULD have taken a big pay cut.

Probably one of the most impressive stretches I've seen from a GM in any sport - and he swung the trade for Marte which was amazing. It's almost like he was able to identify needs, maintain the roster and bench, all while working under Sherman (and Denbo lol). Hmmm......

I think we took that season for granted as far as the front office and the moves that were made. Mike Hill will never get the recognition he deserves for that. I'd argue you could write a book or make a movie about that run. And it's crazy to think Hill was replaced after what he did there, though I don't at all think it was a result of that season, I think the timing was just there to move on and I don't blame him from not taking a pay cut and I don't blame Jeter for wanting to handpick a new GM at the time. But now in hindsight isn't it funny remembering what it was like to have a GM who actually worked?

I mean he wasn't fired...he just wasn't brought back and I also feel like his salary was one of the reasons as he was one of the higher paid GMs - that combined with wanting to hire someone of your own choosing combined to letting him walk. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him land another GM job at some point later on down the road if he decides to relinquish his current role with MLB.
August 10, 20224 yr Just now, taiwanmarlin said: Blame Jeter for low-balling Hill and hiring the wrong guy on Ng. it really all goes back to Sherman at the core - being cheap and retaining people who are clearly incompetent at their job.

To go out of my way to be fair, I think what she meant with that particular statement was that while she's watching the game/the game is being played, she can't do anything about the outcome - i.e. she can't go down there and hit a home run, which is a valid take. BUT it can also be seen as "well why don't you do something about the roster, and then you won't have that problem" - which is how many see it. She definitely should be doing much more to impact the game results in a positive way, via roster construction. 2 hours ago, SonOfJack said: Mike Hill was amazing compared to what we have now No kidding. I think his tenure got too overshadowed by Loria's meddling....to be fair, we'll never know the full extent of who arranged what signing and trade wise, but it's pretty evident that many of the bad trades (at least at the end) were Loria's demands/doings.
August 10, 20224 yr Loria screwed us over by giving Hill that last salary increase. If I remember right didn't Loria give him some massive extension and pay raise right before Loria left? I remember that being like a thank you/a way to give Hill some security before Loria left.

Yeah, I don't recall if the parameters were ever announced, but yeah I remember Hill getting the extension when Loria was going out the door.

Looked it up: Boob Nightengale reported that Hill was given a five year extension and pay raise just before the sale of the team but Jon Heyman says the extension and raise was actually done in 2015 and thus was in place long before the sale. So in hindsight, Heyman was correct as Hill's contract was up in 2020 which means a five year extension was added in 2015. So no it wasn't a parting gift from Loria, it was just revealed near the time of the sale.

So Loria pays him too much and Sherman wants to cut down on his new contract and Hill just said hell NO.

But also it's normal for a new ownership to want to bring in a new GM for themselves. This is fair and not something to complain about it. Doesn't look they made the right hire though.

I know I supported the idea of him staying in a lesser role as someone that knew the system, with a new voice in charge as a GM/overall. He likely wouldn't have taken that either, though.
