The Fire Kim Ng Thread

Sounds about right for a Nightengale report.

Nightengale report would have said "Marlins have extended GM Jeff Conine through 2030."

Yes. This is true. But also it's normal for a new ownership to want to bring in a new GM for themselves. This is fair and not something to complain about it. Doesn't look they made the right hire though.

Thats because the hire was based pretty much entirely on how much they wanted to pay said GM as the first through tenth priority.

Nah that's irrelevant here. It's the same job regardless of pay. Kim isn't bad because she comes cheap. And she wouldn't be better if she was higher paid. You search for qualified people and Kim Ng fell under qualified person, zero to do with pay.

And in hindsight they could have made a better hire for even cheaper and still have gotten someone who does the job better.

You can't say "the Marlins GM sucks because the owner was too cheap to hire a better one."

Sure there are or were bigger name GMs available but that doesn't mean they couldn't have gotten a good one.

No word that I had heard was that a number of possible hires were not interested the Marlins were wanting to pay lesser than market value basically for a GM.

Its like you hear of a job opening, then you hear of the pay they are offering and you say, nah I"m good thanks.

Doesn't mean that person isnt qualified, its that they arent interested in doing the job for the pay being offered.

So its 100% relevant.

Source?

I know you know it all, but some corroborating evidence would be nice.

And given ownership's recent track record, I don't necessarily think you're wrong, but some evidence for the claim would be appreciated.

Corroborating evidence is typically frowned upon in these parts!

I think Kim can be an asset to an organization, just not in this role at this time. She would probably be really good as an assistant GM. In fact, isn't that what she did with the Yankees?

Yes and did it with the Dodgers for longer.

Blame Jeter for low-balling Hill and hiring the wrong guy on Ng.

Ng is not a guy. It’s the reason for the hire actually.

No, still not agreeing with this. Even if the Marlins are hiring the GM based on the pay, the person being hired is supposed to be someone qualified for the job. I'm sure there are countless baseball people who could do the job well, or better than Kim Ng, even while being paid less. The pay doesn't equal the skills here.

It's the same idea as a lesser paid player being a better player than a big money free agent.

It's entirely fair to assume this. You can be good at something and not necessarily be better at the higher position of it, or just realize you were better at one job than another. Plenty of great coaches aren't great managers, etc. You can be a great teacher but not a great principal, a great businessman but not a great CEO, and so on.

Typical Das BS, no one ever heard this except him.

Forgot to add: you can be a HOF SS but not a great CEO.

Who are you referring to?!

Isn't it obvious?

HOF SS Cal Ripken once tried to be the CEO of a Winn Dixie in his hometown and it didn't work out well.

Who else would I be referring to?

Right still qualified, just a smaller pool of candidates you are choosing from because of said pay.

Just to be honest, I doubt Ng gets fired (although she deserves to be). But, I think the next best thing would be to get a competent general manager and promote him to President of Baseball Operations that way that person could oversee Ng and hold her accountable and eventually bring in their own GM.

I wish but you know the media backlash if we get a man to slip into a position superior to Kim's?

I don't see her getting let go either, but definitely don't see your idea happening.

Nothing but keeping her until she dies will avoid media backlash for the Marlins.  And even then, the headlines would be "MARLINS WORK KIM NG TO DEATH" just because they can.

yeah, there would be backlash....but honestly???? who cares?  the few fans that go to games don't really make a difference so you'd just have the real blowhards out there saying "Im nOt GoIng TO gO tO aNy GamES evAr!"

(but they weren't going in the first place lol)

if the team became good...literally NOBODY would care

"Can't believe the Marlins couldn't allow the great Kim Ng to live forever!"

I've changed my mindset on the whole "omg they'll get trashed in the media!" concept some time ago - simply because NOBODY goes to games as it is so why bother caring? They don't lose anything in the process - they might get some negative clips, tweets, or soundbytes but again nobody goes to games anyway so who freaking gives a damn?  Do what needs to be done.  Worry about optics later on down the road if the team ever gets really good and people start finally coming in droves.
