Here's the deal folks....

 

Its hard to fault Kim for not signing free agents when Bruce Sherman doesnt give any actual budget to sign said players with.

 

Trades are not happening right now really. Wait til next week really and those are likely to really pick up.  Since Bruce refuses to allow Kim and the front office to spend money to get better, we have to hope she can pull some rabbits out of her hat and acquire a CF, a SS, a 1B (of MLB starting level quality) and maybe one other competent bat.

 

Also the other thing is that fans in December could not  give two shits about minor league depth when the Major league product has such massive holes in them.  Its like a who really gives a fuck type of deal and fans are like, ok thats great, that doesnt win games on the MLB level or put people in the seats.  

 

Back onto Allen, he is a AAAA player at best.  I mean he is nice AAA depth I guess, but there is a reason he hasnt really ever made it in MLB.  He doesnt hit good enough to justify ignoring his awful defensive ability.  I dont see the 'robot' umps coming but a more blended system. They are not going to basically 'do away' with the nuances of the catcher position to where the position literally does not matter defensively.  Besides with this new emphasis on limiting throws to the bases, you are going to need a catcher athletic enough to both catch AND throw to the bases as I am almost positive you will see steals on the way up.

But then we care about that depth in May when Erik Gonzalez shows up, so let's take a top-level approach. The small moves are all fine and make sense, but yes they need to make the big ones in the next 2.5 months or this place is going to get *very* quiet.

Doesn't matter if there's minor depth or not when she forgets to call people up and leaves the bench short anyway.

That's true, and those are things you do but since most organizations are focused on their major league product this time of year, this kind of moves are hardly ever examined because they are blurbs at the end of other larger transactions.

But since the Marlins have no operating budget it seems....

Mr. Sherman, how do you feel about this ?

When would Miami Marlins showing off their booty like this ?!

People can't even use the "players don't want to come here" excuse anymore considering the Padres have managed to sign Eric Hosmer (didn't work out but was still a top FA at the time), Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts over the last four or five years. Yeah I know guys like Judge and Turner passed on their money, but the fact that they've landed three major guys (not to mention trading for Juan Soto, who they'll probably extend) shows that actually trying does yield results.

No one ever thought of San Diego as a marquee free-agent destination, and yet, the Padres have become one because they have been willing to spend the money. Funny how simple the solution is.

Shermie expects fans to pack the place for at least 3 years before hell consider even going to 110mil - regardless of results on field.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that logic.  But you also can't take a 70 win team and do nothing and expect you'll magically be competitive, all while the already vastly better rivals have made several moves to better themselves.

I agree we've lacked that depth for inevitable injuries the last several years, so it's good to fill that out.

Arraez would be fun because he actually gets on base which is something this team sorely needs considering so many are swing or miss on the team.

The Marlins should do backflips to get Buxton if he is made available. And it's his offense also.

Arraez (who I like a lot) doesn't work for me unless they move Jazz - thats via trade or to SS if they think he can do it. Arraez loses a lot of value not at 2B. But if Jazz has to stay at 2B and Arraez can play half the time at 3B (I don't know this answer) and get the Jazz off days at 2B, that becomes a lot more interesting if 1B/LF time is limited.
