MARLINSBASEBALL

1) Shocking that a poll posted on Fish Stripes twitter would display Fish Stripes as the primary source of info

2) Why is Glenn Geffner's newsletter still involving the Marlins if they dumped him and he doesn't like them?

Probably the same way Frisaro "retired."

ALSO - the poll came from Geffner's newsletter, Fish Stripes did not make the poll.

Ah.  Well it may just depend on the number of followers of each - if Fish Stripes promotes it and has more followers than Geff's site, maybe their sharing it skewed the results.

A thought: Jeezy hasn't improved whatsoever. Avisail either, but focusing on Sanchez. He's got no approach. It's swing wild and hope for the best.

He's got enough power that if he just waits back and tracks it into the zone, he can probably hit 20 homers by accident and still put up good numbers outside of that. It's disappointing.

Avisail is Avisail at this point and we're not going to see him go anywhere because of that contract ...

I think I have more faith in Avi than Sanchez at this point due to experience and the fact that he has had long stretches of success before. Feels like Sanchez has never clicked outside of a few spurts.

same here.  Again, if Avi even got back to 80% of just his career norms that would be an immense improvement and would help this club out a ton - he's had a few nice swings lately so here's hoping i guess (totally not expecting him to do shit though haha)

Edit:  Also, the Rays were willing to part with him soooooo....I like to think their talent eval guys and FO are generally one of the better in all of MLB so them willing to dump him is pretty much spot on with how he's performing now.

The raw physics tools are there.  The problem seems to be between the ears.  LOL

It's a shame because he seemed decent in his debut in 2021.  Even the first couple of weeks of 2022 he hit well.  Then it all went to shit.  He looks hopeless up there now and he has no minor league options left.

Yeah, but didn't he have a career year with the Brewers after he left Tampa?

Yeah, sorta, kinda. Then the lockout happened and he forgot what baseball was and gained a bunch of weight.

He was pretty solid in 2021. Albeit it was a relatively small sample size of 251 PA, but he still OPSed .808.

Obviously the pitchers have adjusted to him and now it's up to him to counter. He is literally only 26 PA into the season, so I wouldn't give up on him just yet. Now if it's July or August and he still looks like trash, then yeah maybe he just stinks.

I will say on the bright side that he is actually taking some walks so far, which is something he really didn't do at all last season.

I feel like if there was at least an adjustment in his ... well, he has no approach up there, clearly ... but if there was an adjustment, we'd at least see some signs.

He was pretty good in Tampa too but Tampa doesn't pay guys because they have a ridiculous farm that has prospects that actually come up and contribute unlike the garbage we have that gets hyped and does jack shit.

Tampa doesn't pay guys because like many small market teams,  they don't have the revenue.  I do agree that they do have an incredible scouting department and that they develop their talent like no one else can.

My only point was that Tampa didn't get rid of him because they thought he was going to suck.  If they did get rid of him for that reason, they were obviously wrong since had a decent run in MIL.

I don't think anyone could have predicted this level of suck for Avi.  Hopefully,  for our sake, he can rebound and at least become a replacement level player.  I don't have high hopes, however.

Why would you pay him if you felt you had someone else who could replicate what he did though and at a lower cost?

Well, that wasn't really what you said.  You insinuated that Tampa new he was going to suck, so they got rid of him.  Tampa, like the Marlins, replace all of their players because of finances.  I mean, they traded away Price, Longoria,  Snell, Archer and many other stars while in their prime.  They just do a much better job of developing their prospects in order to replenish the Major League roster.

I said they knew Sanchez was going to suck so they dumped him. Avi makes a lot more than Jesus and they knew they could get comparable production for a lot cheaper. Totally different dude. If they thought Sanchez was going to be good they would have kept him because he was cheap and had options. Avi is a vet, cost more and was a FA. Vastly different.

My bad.  I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you were talking about Avi.

All good dude. Like a lot of folks said his got start was just due to pitchers not knowing his weaknesses. Once challenged he never adjusted back unfortunately. I just really don't trust any prospects the rats are willing to part with because their people are just so good at figuring out who has actual talent. It's a good rule of thumb GMs should follow more often.

I like how this thread just started off as my thoughts about Wendle playing SS and Jazz playing CF after the Marlins opening weekend, and it's turned into a general discussion about different Marlins related stuff.

That's cool, though. A thread to post your random Marlins related thoughts and start a discussion.

Here are my latest thoughts..

I don't want to sound like I'm nit picking, because I am a fan of the lineup changes that happened after starting the season with the terrible lineup choices of Jazz hitting cleanup and Soler hitting 2nd among others.

I still would like to see Jazz and Arraez hitting 1-2 though. It just makes so much sense compared to Jazz and Cooper. Like just switch Coop and Arraez in the lineup and leave every thing else the same, and you have an optimized lineup with the current players the Marlins have to work with.

I think that they are setting the lineup this way because of the Left, Right, Left, Right format of Jazz, Coop, Arraez and Soler.

But I say, don't be afraid of having two Left hand batters back to back at the top of the lineup. I mean, there are more right handed starting pitchers and pitchers in general than left handed pitchers. When Pierre and Castillo were batting 1-2 most of the games started with both of them hitting left handed, even though Castillo was a switch hitter. So, yeah, play Jazz and Arraez 1-2 for most games and then when you are facing the real dominant LHPs like Kershaw and others, than yeah play that regular starting lineup.

Again I know it's not going to happen. But still those are my thoughts about the Marlins lineup. Still can't complain too much though. The lineup changes were a real big improvement over the first few games!

I mean, it's also called "some thoughts so far" without a specific topic.

Yeah, I like the speed up top idea from the '03+ squad.  But I guess if it's working right now, don't "fix" it...

Skip's bullpen management is so much better than Don's. So so so much better.

Someone on the bird site wholeheartedly told me that Don made good bullpen decisions and I almost died.

Yesterday when down 2 and Luzardo struggling, pulled with 1 out and 2 on.

Don's idea: "Right handed batter coming up, let me bring in the right handed pitcher."

Skip's idea: "I'm gonna bring in Nardi who has been very good lately."

Don's result: probably a run scoring and a new pitcher in the 6th.

Skip's result: double play + another inning out of Nardi.

Down one in the 7th.

Don's idea: "We're losing so who cares who comes in? Get someone some work."

Skip's idea: "Barnes has been decent. Maybe not the best but he'll probably keep us at 1."

Don's result: Probably now down 3 and two more pitchers used.

Skip's result: Barnes wasn't perfect and even gave the Giants an extra out by missing the base but he got through and kept it at 1.

These little things add up so fast!!
