July 9Jul 9 MLBTR did an article on the Marlins trade deadline outlook, so figured I'd post it and start a general deadline thread discussion. The article is behind a paywall, but highlights potential needs as:-Back-end starter-high-leverage relief-third base-right-handed batMLB Trade RumorsTrade Deadline Outlook: Miami MarlinsThe streaking Marlins now look like they'll be surprise deadline buyers. MLB Trade Rumors examines where they'll look to add.
July 9Jul 9 I like Paredes, but Houston is only 2 games out in the division.Teams that are for sure sellers:Giants, Rockies, Mets, Angels, RoyalsMaybe:Reds, Athletics, Tigers, OriolesI wonder what it would take to get Zack Gelof from the Athletics.
July 14Jul 14 The most glaring hole in the lineup is third base. Norby, Pauley, Sanoja, and Jimenez would make a great third baseman if you combined them all together but so far they have been less than impressive individually. Here are the players I see as possibilities with comments:Kyle Karros COL- doubt the Rockies let him go since he is so young, but the right assets might move the needle.Matt Chapman SFG- Would need Giants to carry the contract, wouldn't cost much, is old and declining. Isaac Paredes HOU- Looked to be a good fit, Astros have surged though and likely won't be sellers.Zack Gelof ATH/OAK/SAC/ LVA- gets hurt a lot, still young, would cost a pretty penny with risky upside.Caleb Durbin BOS- not much of an upgrade, still relatively young, Red Sox may be reluctant to sell with resurgence.Maikel Garcia KCR- gets hurt a lot and currently injured, might be untouchable, fits the Bendix mold to a T, would cost a mighty haul.Nolan Arenado ARZ- declining rapidly, brings veteran presence, contract problematic money wise, an older version of ChapmanCurtis Mead WAS- young with upside, breakout season, Nats unlikely sellers as they are in race with Fish.Royce Lewis MIN- massive upside, injuries galore/can't stay healthy, Twins still in playoff race, would cost a lot.Colt Keith DET- still young, Tigers are sellers, has struggled at ML level, pretty steep costDenzer Guzman LAA- should be completely untouchable but the Angels are pretty poorly run, is super young but has massive upside, would take big cajones to hand the keys to 3b to a 22 year old in a playoff race.Manny Machado SDP- massive contract albatross, could come cheap because of that, is old and declining.Couldn't find anyone else who was even a long shot in my eyes.

July 28Jul 28 Author Marlins plan:-"holders" (sell)-don't do anything in the offseason aside from a scrap heap guy or two-hope something goes right-it doesn't-repeat next year
July 28Jul 28 I would try to move Hicks, his value is high right now and really does not have a future here. If you get blown away by an offer for Otto or X you have to atleast consider it. Hold Eury, Sandy, Peterson and Max. Anyone else on the pitching staff could go. We do have a logjam in the OF and a couple of guys in Jacksonville knocking on the door. Could see us making a move with one of those guys. No reason to sell anyone for peanuts, a team will have to pay if they want someone. We should also be looking at potential long term 3b options.

July 28Jul 28 Yeah, if we're going to deal anybody, Liam would be a smart one. I would put Owen Caissie out there as well. He's been decent, but you have to start both Hernandez and Conine over him at this point.

With uncertainty of the potential of a floor (or at the very least, I feel there will be something with actual teeth/stronger than a grievance to "encourage" teams to spend), will clubs that would normally sell hold on to higher paid players as a way to be closer to the potential floor before adding more? Meaning those that do sell can extract more value in return?I'd agree, there will be a lockout, just a matter of how long it'll be....Both side need to pull their heads out of their asses and figure something out for the betterment of the game instead of killing it via lockouts and lost seasons. Consider a guy like Sandy if he was available. If the interested teams think 2027 is shortened or erased, he loses a lot of value and becomes more like a 2 month rental.

For example, a 2 year deal signed for what was the 2026 and 2027 season would now become a deal for the 2026 season and 2028 season, right?

July 28Jul 28 If they aren’t going to buy, they should sell whatever they can. Standing pat is such a waste of time.

But I don’t see Bendix actually buying and giving up prospects so he’s probably happy with where there at all considering. They have no guys with expiring contracts this so they really don’t need to sell unless they get a great deal and Bendix always listens

Sell guys you can get a good value for.
