Borowski signs....
Former Chicago Cubs reliever Joe Borowski agreed to a contract Monday with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and will join the last-place team after the All-Star break. The 34-year-old saved 33 games for the Cubs in 2003, helping them make the playoffs. He appeared in 11 games this season and was 0-0 with a 6.55 ERA before being designated for assignment when the Cubs activated Kerry Wood on June 29. Borowski posted a 2.63 ERA in 68 games in 2003, but has been hampered by injuries the past two seasons. He was 2-4 with nine saves and an 8.02 ERA in 22 games last year, when he spent time on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. The right-hander appeared to be doing well in spring training this year, but was hit by a line drive and opened the season on the DL with a broken bone in his wrist. Overall, Borowski is 13-18 with 44 saves and a 3.91 ERA in parts of nine seasons with the Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees. He will join the Devil Rays (28-61) on Thursday, when the team begins a series at Toronto. The club will have to make a move to open a roster spot. Source: AP

World Baseball Classic News
? The United States will be grouped with Mexico, Canada and South Africa next year in the first round of baseball's first World Cup-style tournament. ?? The 16-nation, 18-day event, called the World Baseball Classic, opens March 3 in Tokyo or Taiwan, where Group A will include Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China. ?? The United States will be in Group B, which starts play March 8 along with the other groups and will be based in the United States. ?? Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama and the Netherlands are in Group C, which will be in Latin America, and the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Australia and Italy are in Group D, which will be based in Florida. ?? 850740 SWEET maybe we can use that as way to get a stadium? If the tourney is to be there every year. They are gonna want a real Baseball stadium to use! Extra income for Loria then too :dances: Go fish! 850766 You can tell I didn't read the whole story....that would be kick butt!!!!

World Baseball Classic News
? The United States will be grouped with Mexico, Canada and South Africa next year in the first round of baseball's first World Cup-style tournament. ? The 16-nation, 18-day event, called the World Baseball Classic, opens March 3 in Tokyo or Taiwan, where Group A will include Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China. ? The United States will be in Group B, which starts play March 8 along with the other groups and will be based in the United States. ? Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama and the Netherlands are in Group C, which will be in Latin America, and the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Australia and Italy are in Group D, which will be based in Florida. ? Major League Baseball has spent more than a decade discussing the tournament and hopes the event will gain in prestige, such as soccer's World Cup. The International Olympic Committee voted Friday to kick baseball out of the Olympics following the 2008 Beijing Games. IOC president Jacques Rogge cited baseball's refusal to allow players on 40-man major league rosters to participate and the sport's drug-testing rules, which do not meet the World Anti-Doping Agency's standards. ? ??I don't know if frankly I consider it a blow,'' baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. ??I'm sorry they made the decision, but we're moving on in a very dramatic way to internationalize this sport.'' ? While Nippon Professional Baseball has agreed to participate, the Japanese players' association has not yet given its approval and has objected to having the tournament during spring training. It also is unclear whether Cuba, which might fear defections, will accept its invitation. ? Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the players' association, said the obstacles could be overcome. ? ??Cubans play international events with American and against Americans all the time,'' he said. ? Several players who agreed to participate attended a news conference on the day prior to the All-Star game: Miguel Tejada (Dominican Republic), Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico) Andruw Jones (Netherlands), Dontrelle Willis (United States), Jason Bay (Canada), Carlos Lee (Panama), Hee Seop Choi (South Korea) and Justin Huber (Australia). ? ??I just hope I make the team,'' Willis said. ? Tejada said fans back home would look forward to the event, which baseball hopes will be played a second time in 2009. ? ??They're going to be really excited to see all the players on one team,'' he said. ? Each team plays three first-round games, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the second round, where each team plays three more games starting March 13. ? Four teams advance to the single-elimination semifinals on March 18, and the semifinal winners go on to a one-game championship on March 20. The second round will be split between the United States and Latin America, and the semifinals and final will be played in the United States. No specific sites were announced, but the list of possibilities include Houston, Seattle and sites in Florida, Arizona and California. ? Each team will have 27 players, including at least 12 pitchers, and there will be pitch-count limits. Players must be citizens of the nation they play for. ? ??We're aware of the issue of country jumping,'' said Paul Archey, an executive vice president in the commissioner's office, ??but we haven't adopted a hard-and-fast rule.'' ? Teams agreed not to block players from participating, but Orza acknowledged some clubs would try to sway players against playing. ? ??You can't stop people from talking,'' he said. ? Forty-seven percent on the net proceeds of the 39-game tournament will go to prize money, with the remaining 53 percent split among Major League Baseball, the players' association, the International Baseball Federation and the organizations of the participating teams. ? While soccer's World Cup is run by FIFA, the sport's international governing body, this event is pretty much controlled by MLB and the players' association, which has drawn complaints from Japanese baseball officials. ? ??Some already have accused us of being too dominant in the conduct of this event and we're sensitive to that,'' Orza said. ? Insurance will be the largest single item in terms of cost, said Paul Archey, a baseball senior vice president. Source: AP

Early reports indicate
With Roy Halladay out of the mix after suffering a broken bone in his leg, it appears the American League starting job at the All-Star Game will fall to Chicago White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle. Meanwhile, National League manager Tony La Russa stayed close to home with his choice, tabbing his own right-hander Chris Carpenter, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. American League All-Star manager Terry Francona placed a call Sunday to check Buehrle's status for Tuesday's game. "He called to check on my availability to pitch and could I pitch an inning or two," Buehrle told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I told him, 'If you want me to start or close, whatever.' I can go two innings, though [manager] Ozzie [Guillen] only wants me to pitch one. I bounce back pretty quick. I'm not worried." Guillen said yesterday that he hopes that Francona won't overuse his pitcher. "Buehrle is supposed to start and I'm a little ... not disappointed, a little concerned, because Buehrle just threw a couple days ago," Guillen told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago. "He threw [saturday] and he's only gonna throw, hopefully two innings. It's great for the White Sox, I think it's great for Buehrle, but in the manager way, I think it's real hard to see, you know, the pitcher we're gonna count on, go through that many innings in so little time." Francona was not pleased to hear of Guillen's comments. "Guillen is the manager of the Chicago White Sox, not the American League All-Stars," Francona told The Boston Globe. "I'll announce it when it's appropriate." La Russa refused to confirm his decision Sunday, wanting to honor Major League Baseball's request to embargo their choice. "The pitcher has been informed and the manager has been informed," La Russa told the Post-Dispatch, noting that he narrowed the field to three before reaching his verdict. Starting Carpenter would mark the third time in La Russa's four games as an All-Star manager that he has selected one of his own pitchers to make the start. He also picked Bob Welch and Dave Stewart when La Russa managed the Oakland Athletics. Carpenter would become the first Cardinals pitcher to start the All-Star Game since Rick Wise in 1973. Marlin's Beinfest/Loria Worst Move Ever?
Far and away the worst move has been signing Al Leiter to an 8 million dollar contract...he is pitching more like a league minimum type pitcher and to think that he is going to be on the Marlins books for another 3 years cause of deferred payments is even more sickening

Jeremy Affeldt speculation.
Looking for relief: The Marlins continue to search for relief help, and Kansas City left-hander Jeremy Affeldt is a possibility. Affeldt, 26, has been on the disabled list since June 19 with a groin injury. He was the Royals' closer for part of last season and early this season. Affeldt, scheduled to return Friday, has no decisions and a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings. He had 13 saves and a 4.50 ERA in 30 relief appearances last season. He is making $950,000 this season. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...notes_0707.html DO YOU GUYS THINK THIS IS WORTH HAPPENING??? 844122 If he can be had for cheap or a lower level prospect I think he is defintely worth it...he is a proven reliever with some starting skills

Marlins/Yanks Trade Rumors
OK, now many of us have heard the players' names that have been floating around the supposed trade discussions between the Yanks and Fish, but there is a new name that I heard has popped up as of late yesterday. Yes, we all know that Sheffield, Burnett, Stanton, Tom Gordon, Encarnacion, and in some cases Pierre and Lowell, but the latest name that I heard is A-Rod. A couple of other sites have mentioned it and I wanted to know if anyone else heard something. Supposedly, Steinbrenner is dead set on having Pierre along with Burnett, that he'd be willing to give A-Rod and take Lowell in return as well. Does anyone know how accurate this is? Or is it just NY-based speculation? Oh, and there is a tidbit of extra speculation that in order to replace Pierre that an agreement has already been made with the D-Rays involving Carl Crawford, that is dependant on the Yanks/Marlins deal because there is a prospect on the Yanks that is wanted by the Rays, along with Marlins' prospects. Would Admin Beinfest pull of something like this without anyone knowing? Please let me know. :o 843993 Although it sounds like a wonderful trade...the Fish don't have the resources ($$$$) to pull that type of deal off.....unless the yankees are willing to pick up $20-$22 million on A-Rod contract for him to play for us....I don't see it happening

ENC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap. When do we give this guy the CLUTCH tag? 843437 he is driving up his value to the Yanks....LOL congrats to Enc and the Fish a great game by the bullpen and clutch hitting by Enc :notworthy to Enc and the pen
