July 27, 200619 yr Personally, though the guy doesn't swing a great bat, his defense is tops and is a nice little crafty vet. I wouldn't mind having him around for a few more years as a backup. Fritz now hates me.
July 27, 200619 yr :notworthy Treanor. I like the guy...Misty May is the grasper too but he is a good player, a nice leader, a hard worker, and a good guy. He is a backup catcher, but I like Olivo as the starter so I'm ok with it.
July 27, 200619 yr Serviceable. Can do a decent job when he starts, however he is not nor will he ever be an every day catcher IMO.
July 27, 200619 yr He's what a good backup catcher should be. Very good defensively, & works well with the pitchers.
July 27, 200619 yr Exactly what Hotcorner said... I was really pulling for him to make the team out of Spring Training. I'd love to see him as a mainstay here, in a backup role... very much like Mike Redmond was for us for years.
July 27, 200619 yr I like the guy. He is not an everyday catcher, but is solid for a start or two a week.
July 27, 200619 yr As a person Matt is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, he signs autographs well and he takes time with the fans. When he made is MLB debut I couldn't have been happier I felt almost the same way when Jorgy made his, except he didn't spend 10 years in the bushes like Matt. Now as a player he's a slightly above average catcher. He appears to call a good game, handle pitchers well and keeps runners from stealing, BUT he could be replaced by another player and I don't think it would hurt the team if they did that.
July 28, 200619 yr Agree with the consensus. A servicable back-up catcher. My biggest question with him is how in the world did he get Misty May to marry him. Must be a really NICE guy and a good LISTENER. Should be a lesson for all of us guys.
July 28, 200619 yr I like him, he does a good job. I'd like to see him stay around for a few years, but if we were able to aquire a very good catcher (ex. barrett, lo duca, piersynski) I'd want to keep Olivo as the backup and make Matt expendable.
July 28, 200619 yr He does a great job at what he is there to do. I dont care at all what he does with the bat, he provides good defense, calls a good game and probably puts in a lot of work on the side with all the other pitchers. I'll take it.
July 28, 200619 yr I'd rather have Mike Redmond. What's he up to these days? I haven't heard anything about him since he left. Hitting about .330 for the Twins this year.
July 28, 200619 yr He's got 114 AB's, he's been very solid in the backup role. BTW, to stay on topic... I like Matt. He's fun to watch.
July 28, 200619 yr I think that hes good at what he does...(being a backup catcher) and i respect how he sprints, and i mean sprints around the bases on a home run
July 28, 200619 yr My opinion on Matt Treanor is that he is a top of the line back up catcher. He is extremely passionate every time he gets on the field. He is the type of guy that will give you 110% every time.
July 28, 200619 yr My thoughts on Treanor echo the majority of the sentiment on this board- very good hand to have around, quality backup catcher and clubhouse guy, will never be a starter in the league. Red could bring a little more O to the table, but like Matty, he had little pop too, so I really think it's a push between the two.
July 28, 200619 yr Great defense.. horrible bat... I'll take him as a backup! My opinion on Matt Treanor is that he is a top of the line back up catcher. He is extremely passionate every time he gets on the field. He is the type of guy that will give you 110% every time. well said :thumbup
July 28, 200619 yr He is a great, great defensive catcher in NL. (He looks like Joe Girardi's catching as a player.) How 'bout our pitching stats? I partly agreed that he influenced positive things to the young pitcher. He wasn't a offensive catcher, I know It's a Great Job, isn't it?
July 28, 200619 yr I love how this thread got started after he was the player of the game. Either way, he is a solid back-up to Olivo, who is having a great year. I'll take him any day to provide those 2-3 starts a week.
July 28, 200619 yr Blah, blah, blah, Captain Intangibles, blah, blah, blah. The guy is a marginal player. His defense is solid and he's not the prettiest face in a Marlins uniform. Personally, I'd rather have Girardi as our catcher than Treanor. BA, OBP, and SLG% are JP-esque, so take that for what it's worth. Maybe the fans here just have a thing for players with marginal talent because they're perceived clubhouse guys.
